SFMOMA Artcasts: Johns and DeFeo: December 2012 (no images)

SFMOMA Artcasts show

Summary: Our December Artcast focuses intensely on the careers of Jasper Johns and Jay DeFeo. In 1959 both artists were included in the exhibition "Sixteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Now, in 2012, their work is joined once again in two parallel exhibitions at SFMOMA, on view through February 3, 2013. The exhibitions "Jasper Johns: Seeing with the Mind's Eye" and "Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective" chronicle each artist's development and present the arc of their varied careers. In this episode we explore similarities between these artists by looking carefully at the symbols and materials each of them employed over the years. Music in this episode is by the Studio 13 Jass Band with Wally Hedricks, Jay DeFeo's former husband, on the banjo. Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.
