Episode-1038- Understanding the Coming Shifts in Society | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:06

Recently I have had to explain many times that TSP is not about “the end of the world” in the way prepping is portrayed in “Doomsday Preppers” and other such mass media things.  I don’t mean on the air, I mean in real life and in some email exchanges.  This is part of why I hate things like Doomsday Non Reality TV. Thing is I don’t really care if someone thinks I am nuts.  Hell my business partner Neil Franklin calls me “Crazy Jack”.  The concern is that when prepping is presented as “extreme” to the masses it actually emboldens them to remain unprepared.  They look at this stuff and think “those people are nuts” and the natural response to take the show to be nothing more then entertainment like Jersey Shore of the bimbo Kardahians. The reality is along with things like natural disasters which we have all witnessed many suffer the consequences of not being prepared for, we have a bigger issue.  The world is not going to end but it is shifting right now in many ways, today we are going to discuss that shift. Join Me Today As We Discuss… How we got here collectively How we got here individually (more important) Some Shifts we Must Understand Population Economics Politics Migration Resource Competition Long Term Cycles Why these things will happen, not might happen What we can do to prepare for them Why we need to be prepared to help more then just “our own” The community you are part of whether you want to be or not Why there is a lot of hope in our future despite a lot of challenge Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum TSP Copper ShelfReliance.com – (sponsor of the day) Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) Win A VIP Ticket to The Liberty Forum Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1035- How I Would Personally Design a Sustainable Community | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:08

We just had Brian Newhouse on with a discussion on Permaville.  Since then I have been reading his book and while I like a lot of it, there are some compoenents I don’t agree with.  Such as having land “where no human may step”. Though my view is if anyone buys land individually or collectively it is their land to do with as they please.  Hell there are definitely some parts of my heavily wooded 5 acres I haven’t stepped on, at least a few square feet of thick brambles or two.  Of course it is by choice, not decree. This got me thinking that I have often described in pieces and parts what my vision for what we could call my own version of Permaville would be like but I have never described it deeply.   So I am going to do that today.  If you hear anything you think is “totally wrong” remember that anyone could build a community anyway they choose if you can find others to willing do it with you. Just to be clear my ideas here would be for my community and any rules or ways of things confined to the borders of a privately held piece of land.  It is in no way how I think others should live.  When it comes to my day to day life I am a libertarian, but when it comes to my ideology, I am a voluntarist, please keep that in mind today. Join Me Today As We Discuss… My community would be started from scratch so all involvement is voluntary There would only be 5 main rules 1st rule would be individuals may use personal property as they choose, period 2′nd rule would be people must attempt to solve problems directly first 3′rd rule seek community arbitration before “contacting authorities” 4th rule no one may harm another or take their property 5th rule common areas have their own rules The concept of private property and collective ownership Each land unit is one “share” of the whole Common areas are managed for community and commercial use Community needs before commercial gain Commercial gain is distributed based on share holdings Expenditures and purchases are voted on by share holders All “community dues” are voluntary Community dues can be sweat, commodity or monetary Functions, Goals and Operations Individual home sites in the 1 acre range Approximately 20% of total land should be common or infrastructure Property should be as off grid as possible (about regulations not polar bears) Lots are privately held and common areas are in a land based trust Common areas are use for community production, education and commercial production This isn’t a full picture just the basic components but I feel a society run this way would be tight nit, highly resilient and solve almost all of its own problems.   Someday I may formalize this into a book and call it Perma Libertyville.  Episode-1034- Glen Tate on Books 3 and 4 of the 299 Days Series | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:31:17

Book 4 in the 299 Days Series Today you get an opportunity to win a signed proof edition of the third and forth books in the 299 Days series. Not just by Glen but by me as well, make sure to pay attention to how to do that in today’s episode. Glen Tate is the author of the ten-book prepper novel series “299 Days” published by Prepper Press. The books describe an average guy who prepares for, and lives through, a partial collapse of the United States. Glen joins us today to discuss the plot lines of books three and four in the 299 Days book series.  Today we discuss what an initial collapse would look like and why Glen feels it is inevitable based on his close up insider seat within the walls of government. We also discuss the newest changes Glen has made in his personal life, progress on “flipping his spouse” and the reality that many people within government are becoming receptive to both TSP and the message of 299 days. The story line of 299 Days is as follows, In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain “normal.” Out at the cabin, a collection of amazing–yet real–people assemble. They create their own community because the government isn’t functioning in their area. They have to work together and, as a community, they manage to achieve some impressive results. Unlike most prepper stories, in 299 Days America suffers a partial collapse. The utilities stay one (due to a spell-binding plot twist) and the government functions in larger cities. People in rural areas still get some food and services from the government, but must increasingly rely on themselves. There are no zombies or cannibalism; 299 Days describes a much more likely partial collapse scenario. Grant’s friends, who work in government, describe how things continue to go down hill in the city and how the government is trying to maintain control. They describe exactly why the government, as big and powerful as it once was, cannot control things. Many in the military and law enforcement step in to stop the bad things; others in the military and law enforcement perpetuate the bad things. After a while out at the cabin, some important visitors arrive and present Grant with a difficult choice. Eventually, the Patriots–the side Grant is on–are forced to take on what’s left of the former government. There is a huge battle. In the end, Grant has an important job at the beginning of the rebuilding. Glen is a moderator on the TSP forum under the name “Heavy G.” He lives and works in Olympia, Washington where he has a front row seat to the corruption in government. Much like the main character in the series, the author is a forty-something resident of the capitol of Washington State, Olympia, and is a very active prepper. He grew up in the remote logging town of Forks, Washington. “Glen” keeps his identity a secret so he won’t lose his job because, in his line of work, being a prepper and questioning the motives of government is not appreciated.  Episode-1033- Fodder Systems and Brian Newhouse on Permaville | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:35

7 Day Growth Barley Fodder at Quartz Ridge Ranch Today we start with some follow up on the Craig’s List ad from yesterday’s show claiming you can grow enough fodder per large animal (say a horse or a cow) for only about 70 cents per head per day.   I was skeptical about the cost of the system and its claimed output. We have had knowledgeable feedback on both sides of the issue and it seems that you really can get the output but the system in the ad is high in cost and not really necessary.  Some folks at Quartz Ridge Ranch built their own fodder system from salvaged parts and a few odds and ends, it works beautifully. The key seems to be the animals are feeding not just on the greenery but the entire root mass, this is how one square can provide 15-20 lbs of high quality feed with a 80% nutrient uptake efficiency vs. about 20% on dry grass.  Tune in to learn more about what does and what does not work in this type of system. Project Munoz – One of Brian’s Eventual Permaville Developments We then switch over to our special guest, Brian Newhouse, author and founder of Permaville.  Permaville offers a new perspective on community development. Including abstracts of over 180 permaculture elements and programs, Permaville details a step-by-step process of how you can redesign your community into paradise. Based on the Permaculture Design Course, Permaville presents a comprehensive philosophy on what people need as it pertains to 12 universal areas of community. The 12 areas of community are water, food, sanitation, healthcare, youth and family, shelter, transportation, environment, energy, education, business and technology. Permaville also includes an extensive pre-design and post-design plan to teach you how to begin and finish a community plan. Permaville is arranged to walk you through the challenges and many potential solutions to improving the physical and social infrastructure of your home or community. If you are looking for a new perspective of what we’re doing on this planet, Permaville is for you.  Episode-1030- The Hands Off Self Sufficient BOL | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:33

One thing many continue to ask me about is how to have land that is productive even if seldom managed.   The true dyed in the wool, off grid BOL.  As you might imagine Permaculture is part of the answer. The key with land like this is it must be able to provide many of your needs but do so in a way that looks very natural.  Anyone passing near it must see it as mostly just scrub and woods like everything else around it. The good news is the best land to do something like this with is often the cheapest land you can buy.  Generally you find “problems” that others don’t want to deal with and either you don’t care about these problems or you have a creative solution to them.  What I will lay out today is an almost perfect system and piece of land.  Odds our neither you or I will ever get anything up to this level of perfection.  We look at it only so that we can figure out how to get as close as possible based on our resources, our budgets and our region. Join Me Today As I Discuss… Why you would want to have a BOL like this in the first place Shopping for land and thoughts on owner financing Four big must haves for others and why you don’t want them (may be) Electric Grid Access Telephone Service Grid water or easy well installation Serviced road frontage What land like this really needs to have Guaranteed right of access Surface water or the ability to create it Decent soil Trees and other on site resources Reasonable terrain Good solar access Minimal regulations and no restrictions Wildlife The Perfect Piece of Land River or stream on it Natural spring on it At least the perimeter is heavily treed Native plants that are edible Good population of wild game Large the larger the better think 10 acres minimum, 50 is ideal Some ideas for setting things up Swales and ponds then more swales and ponds Plant food forests and do so heavily Set up some sort of hard building with a metal roof Set up at minimum 2500 gallons of water catchment (potable) Use coppicing and pollarding to harvest wood Set up earth walled structures Put in an underground structure if at all possible Store as little as possible on site, hide the hell out of what you do Set up high capacity wild life feeders (including for fish) Build functional things that can’t be removed or easily vandalized Create an “earth fence” and plant it with the nastiest stuff you can find Have one way in, one apparent way out and many actual ways out Use a compound approach Consider “tiny houses” on tailors Resources for Today’s Show… Lifetime MSB Membership (limited time only closes on Friday 11-30-12) Members Support Brigade Copper Bullion TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum ShelfReliance.com – (sponsor of the day) The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. For Acorns to be a Food, First a Market Must be Created There are a lot of things wrong with modern business, finance, agriculture and manufacturing.  Many of us understand the current system is far from sustainable but we also know for now it is all we have.  Today I will discuss some business and product ideas that are just bouncing around in my head. Some of these are honestly very easy to do, others may require a lot more work then I imagine but most of them do have a potential to change things for the better long term.  Episode-1026- Building Resiliency in our Children | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:13

Trey Gibson of The Family Podcast Network Many of our children and in fact I personally say young adults up to about the age of 40 have become part of what is being called the “tea cup generation”.  A group that has lost the ability to solve their own problems or deal with adversity or loosing or just about anything part of normal everyday life that doesn’t go perfect. The could be no better example of this then my recent coverage of the 100K Foot Bridge Parents want so their kids can cross a 2 foot wide, 4 inch deep concrete ditch.  If you haven’t see this yet please watch it and note the real tragedy is that, the kids are not the ones with a problem, they cross the ditch without any problems, the parents are the ones who are making a big deal out of this. To me the problem is escalating and become far more pronounced.  I personally think we should call the past generation tea cups and the one they are now parenting the “delicate little flower generation”, all this only a few generations separated from “the greatest generation”?  On that note I have invited Trey Gibson of The Family Podcast Network on to discuss building resilience in our children. Trey Gibson has a Masters degree in counseling psychology and 6 years in helping parents de-stress parenting.  Trey has four of his own kids and has been married to his wife Corrie for the last 8 years. After realizing his passion of showing parents how to take much of the stress out of parenting he launched his own website and podcast called The Family Podcast Network.  There he has dedicated his time to building parents up and showing them how to better raise healthy and strong kids…while not wanting to pull their hair out. He has also launched The Family Podcast Networks sister station, The Marriage Podcast where he and his wife discuss the keys to find and keep passion and fun in your marriage. He joins us today to discuss rebuilding resiliency in our children so that they are prepared for good times or bad.  Episode-1025- The Thanksgiving Special for 2012 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:27:11

Today one day before the great American Holiday we stop and pause to think about what we have to be thankful for. The beginning of today’s show is new, most of it is rebroadcast of the first year I did this show. The beauty of this show is I feel it is something you can share with friends and family. The real history of Thanksgiving is actually a lot more interesting and special then many of the myths. Tune in today to hear… I have found our group of soldiers to sponsor for Christmas this year Why much of what we learn about Thanksgiving is wrong or at least inaccurate How Thanksgiving was at one time considered a “damn yankee holiday” How Thanksgiving became a way for our nation to heal and reunite How the date of Thanksgiving has often been moved around and why The truth about those big buckles the pilgrims wore and all that black clothing What feasting meant 100 years ago to our prior generation that we have forgotten Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
