He established the "Slave," or Ghulam, dynasty in northern India and founded his capital at Delhi. Qutb-ud-din is considered the first Muslim ruler of India, and the story of his life is unique and seems almost fanciful. He was born in present day Afghanistan where he was enslaved as a child and sold to the Qazi of Nishapur in Iran. He was treated as one of the Qazi's sons and he received a formidable education. Still a "slave" (ghulam), upon his master's death he was sold to a slave trader by the Qazi's envious sons. He ended up as slave to General Shahabuddin Muhammad Ghauri, the governor of Ghazni. Qutb-ud-din gained the respect of Ghauri and become his most trusted general; he was sent out on campaigns under the Ghauri aegis as Ghauri went on to capture Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. Qutb-ud-din fought under the general and conquered Delhi in 1193 A.D. where he became governor of northern India. He established a solid administration and he worked to include the local conquered peoples in the ruling of the government by including elected representatives from the north Indian populace. After the death of Mohammad Ghauri, Qutb-ud-din took control over the empire after some power struggles. While his capital was first at Lahore, it was eventually settled at Delhi. He was known as a sophisticated builder and is responsible for the construction of forts, check and tax posts, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, and Qutb Minar in Delhi.
