Huyan is a thirteen-year-old Muslim boy who lives with his father and two siblings. He decides to quit school despite the fact that his grades are always the best. Huyan becomes an ice cream vendor in order to help his father and to give an opportunity for his brother and sister to study. He often sells ice cream in the school without feeling ashamed in his friends' sight. When the school closes between semesters, Huyan cannot sell ice cream, so he has to find another way of getting income. Mimpi, who is Huyan's classmate, suggests that he smuggle rice by riding a train to the border of Malaysia, which will make more money than selling ice cream. This job makes him experience life outside the school. However, when Naka, Huyan's friend, falls off the train and dies, Huyan decides to stop doing this illegal business and sells flowers instead. It is not risky, not illegal, and not adventurous, but it is beautiful and forever. This film shows the admirable culture and values of the people of the south very well and gives a new point of view toward Muslims nowadays. Another interesting view of the film "Butterfly and Flower" is the story that transforms the hardships of life to hope and generosity. Also, the way the story about poverty flows does not make the audience feel depressed, but it will make them feel happiness and the innocence of the characters.
