----Formal English---- Lyon "Forward, forward, Lion the best," such is the motto of Lyon, the second metropolitan area of France, which is home, with its suburbs, to almost 1.8 million inhabitants, the Lyonnais. The chief town of the Rhône-Alpes region, Lyon is at the heart of a geographic intersection in Europe, between the cities of Paris, Turin, Geneva, and Barcelona. Its history and architecture, which go back to the Roman era, made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is founded in 43 B.C by Plancus, one of Julius Caesar's lieutenants. It is then called Lugdunum and its strategic location helps it become the capital of Gaul, while Lutèce ("Paris") is, then, nothing but a place for Roman Emperors to stay. The city quickly becomes the second most important city of the Roman Empire, behind Rome. But after the fall of the Roman Empire, Lyon becomes the victim of succession struggles and invasions, and it's only in the fourteenth century that it is attached to the Kingdom of France. Lyon quickly becomes an important economic center, notably with the trade of silk during the Renaissance. The city is still today a major banking and industrial center. But Lyon also largely participated, and still participates, in the cultural influence of France. In 1998, thanks to its 2,000 year-long history and its strategic and commercial location, the historic site of Lyon becomes a World Heritage Site. Lyon, the birthplace of some worldly famous chefs such as Paul Bocuse, is known as "the capital of French gastronomy," a reputation expanded by the presence of important vineyards in the region, the Beaujolais and the Côtes du Rhone. --------------------------- Learn French with FrenchPod101!
