 The UK- a Fatherless Society | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3609

Neil Colbourne is back from a very sad bereavement and joins Vince to discuss the issues of the day starting with an argument in Spain over a pizza. Peter Hitchens writes in The Mail Online that ...."by the end of his or her childhood, a British boy or girl is much more likely to have a TV set in the bedroom than a father at home." He adds....."almost 50 per cent of 15-year-olds no longer live with both their parents. Although the figures are only an indication he states that that 79 per cent of children aged between five and 16 have a TV in their room. In almost all cases the absent parent is the father. There is no doubt about the facts here. He writes, "The cost of our wild, unprecedented national experiment in fatherlessness is now £49 billion each year – more than the defence budget." He gives us a figure..... costing each taxpayer £1,541 per year is rising all the time. Where does this money go? Hitchens informs us that the money partly goes on handouts and housing, which an old-fashioned family with a working father would not have needed. Partly it goes on trying to cope with crime, disorder, truancy, educational failure, physical and mental illness and general misery, which are so much more common among the fatherless than in those from stable homes. One in three marriages ends in divorce, while many who would once have married never even bother. About 300,000 families of all kinds separate every year. There are now three million children growing up in fatherless homes. What a picture of glowing hope for the future. The podcast clearly shows how life works in circles and that the fatherless society is heavily influenced by the lack of male teachers in Primary schools and the influences of pop idols. Can the G8 address these issues? No chance as Syria and Turkey are still encountering problems and we are now wondering whether David Cameron's priority is to send arms to the rebels. Maybe his problems are closer to home?

Dene Michael from Black Lace | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1984

Dene Michael was a member of the group Black Lace and we've all danced to Agadoo or mucked about with Superman. It was great to catch up with my old friend Dene who used to come in and tell us about his new ideas when he was here in Benidorm. Dene is involved in lots of good showbizz things and is currently on several adverts being shown on TV in the UK. He is on a reality show in the USA and is back on UK TV later this month. It was interesting to discover Dene spent a lot of his formative years in Australia having been a paperboy at Bondi and an extra on Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. You'll probably have danced to Agadoo and Dene tells us about the early days with Black Lace. Nice to see Dene doing well.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet Mike over the airwaves on 22nd April 2013 when he told me about his fascinating and wonderful career. Mike Sarne was born Michael Scheuer at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London. Active in the 1960s as singer, he is best known for his 1962 UK novelty chart topper, "Come Outside" (produced by Joe Meek), which featured vocal interjections by Wendy Richard. In the mid 1960s Mike introduced the ITV children's quiz series, Junior Criss Cross Quiz. Films he has directed include: Joanna (1968) and most notably Myra Breckinridge (1970), an adaptation of Gore Vidal's book of the same name, starring Raquel Welch, Rex Reed, Mae West and Farrah Fawcett in her first big screen role. A more recent film is The Punk and the Princess (1994) an adaptation of Gideon Sams' young adult novel The Punk, about the romance between a teenage punk rocker and an upper class Sloane Ranger girl. He also directed a documentary about the Glastonbury Music Festival in 1995. As an actor, he has appeared mainly on television, in British series including The Avengers, Man in a Suitcase, Jonathan Creek, and The Bill.
