How And What We Edit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:30

“My fourth and final question, for the time being lads, and as a fellow potential podcaster I’m interested in what you have to say on this. I see you’ve been podcasting since around 2018 I think? So, looking right back to when you started, has there been any material recorded that you wished you used? I see you had loads of guests when you first launched, and I presume you edited these to retain the best bits, but was there any unused material that you think you should have used, and will that be used in other material going forward? Did you ever have a guest record with you, that ended up being something that couldn’t be used? As an aside, do you retain all your recordings in an archive, and edit archived material into other episodes?” Stuart and William once again share their knowledge and expertise about podcasting as they discuss the above question which is another in the set of four sent in by listener Toby in Leicestershire, England. They cover many topics during this fifteen-minute discussion including how they aren’t a stereotypical podcast, and when they do have guests, they rarely remove anything from the recording, but when they do, it's only as long as you don’t lose the essence, sometimes less is more. Essentially though they have to go with the decision of the guest, if the guest really wants something removed, it will be removed, and never see the light of day.  It’s World Thrift Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:01:45

Hosts Stuart and William, mark World Thrift Day, in this bonus episode of The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast. World Thrift Day is celebrated annually on 31st October worldwide, though in India the day is celebrated on 30th October. The day was established with the intent of raising awareness among people all around the world about the idea of saving their money in a bank rather than keeping it under their mattress or at home. This promotes savings and financial security for not only the individuals but for nations as a whole. This article in part explains the history of the day and its significance even now: https://bit.ly/3NbikU2 --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thepeoplescountryside/message

This Is An Audio Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:08:02

“Hi, me again, my third question for you, as a potential podcaster myself. So, do you ever film your podcast episodes? I see you make films that relate to your output and behind the scenes films, but do you see yourselves becoming a ‘visual’ podcast? Stuart and William discuss another follow up question about podcasting from listener Toby in Leicestershire, England. During this deliberation they talk about how this podcast is very much audio focused, and not a visual show, and that it's likely to stay that way, at least for the foreseeable future anyway. In a way, visuals don’t really interest them, as it can be a distraction to try and do too much during a recording session, and it is better to concentrate on quality, rather than quantity.  Privacy Within Podcasts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:15:23

“Hi chaps, it's me again, Toby. Listened to a number of your exceptional podcasts and want to pick your brains again. I see you guys have online Q&A’s with your audience and other podcasters. Great idea, by the way. As a potential podcaster myself, I thought about joining one, but prefer to ask my questions within a podcast so more people can hear your views. My second question is, how do you deal with the privacy of people appearing on your podcast. How do you allow people to have their voice heard if they don’t want to actually appear? Maybe though you’ve never had anyone who didn’t want to appear publicly, whatever the reason?” Stuart and William share their knowledge about podcasting as they discuss the above question which is another sent in by listener Toby in Leicestershire, England. Among other things they talk about dealing with privacy, about how they’ve had guests that want certain sections of the episode removed and how they’ve dealt with that, how they can blur someone’s image in a video, or change the sound of their voice if they request it.  Asking For Consent | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:12:58

“As someone whose looking at starting a podcast myself, can I ask, do you guys use consent forms for guests or anyone else appearing on your podcast? Have you ever had anyone dispute their contents if you use them, and has anyone refused to sign?” Stuart and William discuss this question from Toby in Leicestershire, England, and during this chat, using their considerable podcasting experience, they share some insights into keeping a podcast running. For example they’ve evolved their consent forms for guests etc. that appear on the podcast. What do you make of this discussion? Do you have a question that you'd like us to discuss?  Cars Are Terrible Masters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:26:05

“Now the Low Traffic Neighbourhood Schemes (LTNs) are being rolled out even more across the city of Oxford, how do you guys feel its gone so far? How is this latest phase going, and being received, as the County Council attempts to reduce motor vehicles in local neighborhoods? A future phase will see some of the arterial routes closed off, moving traffic onto the Ring Road, is this a good vision?" Stuart and William discuss a very controversial subject, particularly locally in their hometown of Oxford, England, the topic of low traffic neighbourhoods. This discussion was instigated by the question above, sent in by listener Jon in Cowley, Oxford, England. LTNs are forcing people to change their habits, meaning this is probably one of the first times the dominance of car travel has really been challenged. We've forgotten how fast the world has become, as we've locked ourselves away in our cars. Low traffic neighbourhoods are a very divisive thing for some people, but we have to change our habits in some way if we're going to tackle climate change. In a lot of people's minds, all LTNs have done is to attack the motorist, and just moving the traffic to the arterial routes. Isn't this just a process though, with those main routes becoming so busy that people realise they should stop driving so much, and to get out on foot, on bicycle, onto buses? Nudged Theory in action. Both Stuart and William share their experiences of these newly formed LTN areas of the city, which lead Stuart to surmise that they have turned parts of Oxford into mini villages, and providing nicer areas for people to live in.  To Travel Or Not To Travel, That Is The Question | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:16:18

“Stuart, you say you don’t travel. Are you missing out? Is your opinion less valid if you don’t travel, and have less experience of other cultures?” Another great question from one of our listeners, this time coming from Ignacio in Peru. Stuart and William discuss and investigate their own very different experiences of travel and life. Stuart states that he gets enough cultural exposure by the fact is lives in the city of Oxford, a very multi-cultural and accepting space. William on the other hand enjoys travelling, and seeing the world, and is something he needs to do to understand the world around him better. In the end, the conclusion is that neither Stuart or William's experiences are a more valuable than the other, it's almost always the middle ground where the answers come from, and this conversation is no different. During this episode they mention the Tommy's Outdoors podcast, here's a link to that podcast: https://tommysoutdoors.com/ This is a podcast where we aim to challenge your beliefs with its main overall themes being nature, philosophy, climate, the human condition, sustainability, and social justice.  Silence Is Golden | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:03

“Is some people’s reticence to sit in silence, and a preference for busyness, an indication they are fearful of being confronted by their own true self?” Stuart and William chew over the above question, which was sent in by listener Austin in Bogota, Columbia. This lead them ask some quite difficult questions. Are we at times scared of confronting ourselves, and is this one of the reasons why we avoid sitting in silence sometimes, keeping ourselves busy instead? Quiet moments can give us time to process what has happened in our life recently don't you think? Yet there are people who regiment their day to day lives, scheduling their whole day from start to finish, with no quiet time factored in, just busy, busy, busy. Doing one thing at a time, and being aware of our thoughts is surely a better way forward, and in itself a modern form of meditation? Silence often leads to feelings of discomfort, explore that discomfort, and ask yourself when you bring busyness into you life, explore why you are doing that? What purpose does it serve? In this episode William talks about the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, here is a link to their music if you've never heard them before https://spoti.fi/3ynHLeW What do you make of this discussion?  The Maths Of Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:14:00

“Is maths something we humans constructed or is it something we discovered? Is looking at the reality perceived around us mathematically an accurate representation of how things work?” Another broad ranging conversation between your co-hosts Stuart 'The Wildman' Mabbutt and William Mankelow as they discuss the above question from Steve in Bredbury, Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. They go into a deep philosophical discussion around the huge subject of Maths. How it is something we discovered, a language to make sense of the world around us, and how we use it to try and capture the essence of the universe. Maths is based in natural law, it forms a part of all science. This is a question that is almost unanswerable, and hard to find a definitive for, so as they bounce around, trying to explore the possibilities, Stuart and William at times possibly contradict themselves. This podcast is designed to open the door to the big questions, and this is certainly one of them. During this podcast William mentions the James O'Brien's Mystery Hour podcast, you can listen to that show with the following link: https://spoti.fi/3CaL1vg What do you make of this discussion?  Leon's Law [TW] | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:08

Trigger Warning: The topic of male suicide is discussed in this episode. If this is a subject that you find difficult to listen to, then this might not be the episode for you right now. We tell the story of Leon, who was a listener of this podcast, a friend of Stuart's (co-host of this podcast) exploring Leon as a person, and breaking down the barriers, and stereotypes around mental health, and a very set of very human challenges. This episode offers you the listener, one of the most far reaching calls to action this podcast has ever made. In a very different episode to normal, Stuart and William invited Leon's mother Dianne and his step father Cyril to come onto the podcast and talk about Leon. Recorded on the balcony of the home Dianne and Cyril share, they explore family grief, and talk about Leon's Law. They explore the emotions that came as the result of Leon's death including confusion, helplessness, anger, guilt, loss, despair, sadness, and longing. Leon was a very kind, caring, intelligent, skilled and knowledgeable person in a non-conventional way who lived with a form of Schizophrenia, which, sadly, led to him to making a series of decisions that ended in him taking his own life. Leon's story reveals the weaknesses in the current mental health system here in the UK, together with the possibilities of the better support if mental health conditions were framed and supported in a different way. This episode is not about blame, but a candid look at the harsh truths of the systems we rely on to work in daily life. What do you make of this discussion?  Wasting Your Time | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:11:54

“Is anything truly a waste of time?” Stuart and William commence with a short discussion this time, around the question above, sent in by Russ in Harcourt Hill, Oxford, England. During their conversation they ask the question, is anything really a waste of time? Plus, they examine the theory that maybe life doesn't actually have a meaning, though that doesn't always make life meaningless, yet people are always seemingly striving to find meaning. They also expand into how the whole of idea of wasting time is largely all a matter of perspective. What do you make of this discussion? Do you have a question that you'd like us to discuss?  Social Justice Agenda | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:22

“Who sets the agenda in social justice issues?” Stuart and William are not shy of tackling the big questions, and they don't come bigger than the type of question above, which was sent in by Heather in Ablington, Wiltshire, England. This question sparked a discussion around having a lot of privilege, particularly if you're unaware of that privilege. They talk about how admitting you're wrong can be a hard step to take, but it is also often a healthy one, together how those in power, or the unfairly advantaged, can often set the agenda. They also steer the conversation away from social justice at times and talk about the impact of people like Martin Lewis, and even discuss the big question, is this the start of societal collapse?  War's Not Good For Nature | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:17:16

“Heard your episode recently about the impact war has on wildlife. In Cambodia, years of war meant some parts of the jungle there were left undisturbed so nature flourished. Cambodia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world now, and man is plundering the jungles resources to fuel that growth. Some say nothing good can come from war, but it seems in this instance, in some ways nature was better off when man was distracted by war. What do you think?” Stuart and William once again embark on an in depth discussion which was framed around the question above sent in by Ash in Icomb, Gloucestershire, England who is a listener of this podcast. They discuss how habitats can look the way the do because of man's impact, how our impact can be so violent that even the stronger species often don't stand a chance, and that we don't need the distraction war to have less of an impact on some aspects of nature.  Does Direct Action Get Anyone Anywhere - With Guest Chase Iron Eyes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:20

In February 2022, Stuart and William, co-hosts of the well-established The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast, launched the new mini-series 'Indigenous Voices'. For this next instalment, they were joined by Chase Iron Eyes for an interesting conversation, when they revisited a listener question from Adriana in The Netherlands, which was originally discussed in this podcast episode Direct Action, Does It Work? Chase Iron Eyes is an American Indian activist, attorney, politician, and a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He is a member of the Lakota People's Law Project, and a co-founder of the Native American news website, Last Real Indians https://lastrealindians.com/. Chase talks about the systems of law, economy, government, media, all being designed, and these systems are framed to protect capital and property. He explores with us how corporations can destroy a river, but seemingly not face the ramifications, together with telling us about the history of his people, how they've been labelled as barbarians and heathens. He talks of the defence of Mother Earth and how we have it within ourselves to avert this climate crisis. To continue this new mini-series (Indigenous Voices), the question put to Chase was, "Does direct action get anyone, anywhere?" with a subtle extra question of whether Chase has any examples, from personal experience, of what doors have been opened, or closed due to direct action? More episodes in the Indigenous Voices mini-series will be recorded in due course with Chase and others, often only available to watch/listen by our Indigenous Champion support tier backers, on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thepeoplescountryside You don't need to be an expert in the subject matter or in indigenous cultures to enjoy our new mini-series. Just a willingness to explore the unknown, the hard truths, the indigenous viewpoint, and see where it takes us. What can we learn from them and what can they learn from us? What can we learn from each other? Join us then for this interesting, and often philosophical episode of the podcast. You'll likely need to watch/listen to this more than once, as there's so much in there, and much learning to be gleaned from Chase's wise words. This podcast's overall themes are nature, philosophy, climate, the human condition, sustainability, and social justice.
