Drs. Lewis and Austin provide an update on the CoronaVirus and the disease, COVID-19. They hone in on how certain pharmaceutical drugs actually may make a person more susceptible to COVID-19 and increase the risk of dying from the disease. In particular, certain blood pressure medication called ace inhibitors promote access of the virus into human cells. Biologic drugs are immunosuppressants and well known to make people more vulnerable to infection. TV ads for these drugs state, “tell your doctor if you have an infection.” With SARA-CoV-2, people may not be aware they were exposed and have COVID-19. Biologic more likely to cause severe COVID-19 conditions. Paragraph Other common drugs that may make COVID-19 worse, or even fatal, include statins for lowering cholesterol. During early phase of the AIDS epidemic, patients diagnosed with low cholesterol, were shown to die at much higher rates compared to those with normal or elevated cholesterol. Most, if not all, anti-inflammatory drugs, like prednisone, lower inflammation by reducing the activity of your immune system. However, you need a strong immune system to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
