Does your organization dig deep and measure meaningful, human-centric results, like how many lives it will make better, jobs it will create, communities it will strengthen, or families it will serve? Are you extracting resources without replenishing them? Could you sacrifice a few parking spaces for cars in favor of more park space for people? Do you have the moral fiber to reduce your profits in favor of more affordable life-saving products? Could you suppress the desire to pass costs, burden, or blame on your end-user, client, consumer, audience, patient, or citizen, and instead improve your supply chain? Each day you have an opportunity to reduce the size of your ego. Review your vision, values, and goals. Realign your focus and place it on the number or magnitude of problems solved, crises averted, lives saved, children fed and educated, elders respected and cared for, or other similar causes. If you’re courageous and intelligent, you can do that profitably. This is Karl Bimshas, with a point of personal privilege, pride, and admiration. My father arrived in the United States on this date in 1949. You can read about it in his memoir, "Escaping War: Our Journey to Freedom" by John Bimshas => https://www.amazon.com/Escaping-War-Our-Journey-Freedom/dp/1983678015 Squeezed between Soviet Communists and Nazi Fascists during World War Two, my grandfather lead his family and a small group of others out of Lithuania as refugees. My grandmother argued with German soldiers, and to safely navigate between the two forces, my grandfather regularly gathered intelligence. Once, my grandfather and father were on the back of a train, my grandmother and aunt in the front, when the middle was bombed and destroyed. My father witnessed many horrors and atrocities through war-torn Europe during his trek. Yet on this day, after several years of displacement, he happily arrived via Boston Harbor. Any leadership I provide pales in comparison to that of my dad and his family. I will never tire of helping others improve their leadership, particularly immigrants, and I will vehemently oppose proponents of fascism, communism, and autocratic rule. Thanks, Dad. You’re not going to gripe about another  Monday, are you? You’ve outgrown whining by now, right? It’s a brand new day - a chance to be better than you were last week. Monday’s are filled with potential. You could be kinder to people. You could be kinder to yourself. You could begin to stop a bad habit, and replace it with a better one. You could make decisions, rather than deferring them and kicking cans down the road. You could fail spectacularly at something and then recover with such grace that no one will even remember by Friday. You could work at being a better, more effective leader. If theme parks have evolved and you haven’t, the problem might not be with the theme park. I get it. Nobody likes change. Change is messy, complex, and uncomfortable. You know what changes very little over the years: high schools, theme parks, and the DMV. You can go into any one of those places five years later, and they will be about the same. There are no shortages of serious problems yearning to be solved. Pick one, then use this outline below to take action. Write down the problem or challenge that you need to solve. Describe the desired state that could exist without the problem. Describe why that state is desired. Create a specific and measurable goal to make your intention clear and tangible. Set criteria on how to find solutions to the problem. Brainstorm a list of alternative solutions. Narrow the list and pick the "best few" options. Assess each option's feasibility and potential risks versus gains. Reach a tentative agreement with the problem's stakeholders. Put some resources toward the best fallback plan. Firm up the final decision and announce it to those affected. Develop an action plan to go forward. Implement the action plan with confidence, commitment, and passion.
