 285. A Little Collectivism From Time to Time Wouldn't Hurt | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:04:40

Having an independent spirit, thumbing your nose to convention, and erecting the middle finger to all those you disagree with or feel offended by has a time and place. And let's be honest, if you're a fan of rugged individualism, it's most of the time and in most places. Collectivism is putting the needs of the greater society (or team) before your own. Candidly, it's not in us to embrace collectivism wholeheartedly. Positive change will not come from them. Change comes from you once you demand a balance between liberty and responsibility, individualism and collectivism, and possess the wisdom to discern when to turn which dial up or down. Good leaders do this regularly. Lousy leaders refuse to acknowledge the need. Start acting like a good leader. *** Contact Karl Bimshas Consulting: https://www.bimshasconsulting.com/contact/ Learn from Karl: https://www.learnfromkarl.com The Leadership Hotline: https://roxer.com/karlb At Karl Bimshas Consulting, our vision is to create environments where great leaders outnumber lousy leaders, and better leadership is the norm, not the exception.  284. Effective Leadership Is Not A Birthright | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:05:01

In 1920, Lincoln C. Andrews published "Manpower" – a loose field guide created to quickly train many inexperienced men for leadership roles after World War I. The book contained dozens of forthright leadership principles, many of which I believe could serve this century's new and existing leaders equally well, regardless of gender. We again find ourselves shook by a pandemic, threats to democracy, and a renewed urgency to quickly train a significant number of people for new and ongoing leadership roles. Not to put us on a war footing, though future battles are likely, but to remind us of the central tenets and benefits of good and effective leadership, particularly in defense of democracy, and literally, saving the world. Five Central Tenets: Stay creative. Have ingenuity in helping others become more efficient. Build a stronger character. Have a higher purpose. Improve our democratic institutions. 283.Do It Anyway | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:02:46

Not feeling inspired? Do it anyway. Waiting for inspiration is like waiting for confidence. It comes later after you have proven you’re serious by taking action. So make the call, paint the canvas, dare more today than you dared yesterday. Inspiration is the rare reward you get for doing the basics every single day. Occasionally, a fresh perspective or new idea flitters past, curious and seeking attention. Enjoy that boost, but never depend upon it to move you forward. 282.The 5th Who | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:02:59

You know the phrase, "sometimes you can't fix stupid," that is often uttered by a supervisor or a mid-level manager? Replace them, and you will see how quickly stupid becomes brilliant. Find the managers who say some members of their team “simply can’t be taught,” are “a lost cause,” or “just don’t want to work,” and you have found your primary cause of dysfunction. Now, you won’t have the appetite for this, but instead of the five why’s, ask five who’s. Questions like, Who hired or promoted that manager, or who thought that attitude was acceptable? Eventually, if you’re the organization’s head and you’re honest, the uncomfortable “fifth who” will likely be you. 281. The Leader You Aspire to Be | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:03:03

The kind of leader you aspire to be just walked into the room. * What do they look like? * What are they doing today? * How do they feel? * What do they have to tell you? Give specific answers and review them carefully. From now on, before every decision you make, test to see if your actions move you closer to or farther from that ideal leader. That leader is within you right now. You could ignore your desires and replace them with regret, or could choose to do the daily work to grow and develop. 280.Dream Killer | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:02:13

If you ever feel the need to tell a kid who is pursuing something they appear to love that they will never be good at it, shut up. For every success story you hear about someone who battled all the naysayers of their youth to persevere to greatness, there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands who gave up their dreams, happiness, and identity in order to “fit in” with those who couldn’t be bothered to pursue their own dreams and happiness. The world is full of obstacles. Your “tough-love” to an impressionable child is destructive, not constructive. Don’t be that idiot.  #279 What Thoughts Stop You? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:03:28

By now, you know that your thoughts influence your feelings, and your feelings influence your behaviors, which affect your thoughts. And so it goes, around and around, for you and everyone else. Before you know it, a few decades slip by, and you become the dreaded “set in your ways.” What’s been stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve? It’s not just your thoughts, but you’re making it harder for yourself if you don’t turn your thinking around. It’s fear. You’re afraid of any number of things projected with your mind’s eye, and if you think a good leader can’t be afraid, you’re sabotaging yourself. A good leader — great leaders, acknowledge their fears and then proceed. *** Contact Karl Bimshas Consulting: https://www.bimshasconsulting.com/contact/ Learn from Karl: https://www.learnfromkarl.com Roxer: https://roxer.com/karlb At Karl Bimshas Consulting, our vision is to create environments where great leaders outnumber lousy leaders, and better leadership is the norm, not the exception.  #278 Not Every Idea You Come Across Has to be Pursued | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:03:40

Time is short, and resources are limited; just because you come across something new or get a great idea from a book, video, or a self-proclaimed subject matter expert, doesn’t mean you should adopt it. Small and mid-size company presidents and CEOs do this a lot. They are searching for the secret sauce that will solve their problems. After their offsite meeting, they return to the office with new vigor and a “stop the presses” mentality. Have you ever subscribed to the idea-of-the-month club? It’s difficult for a professional tinkerer and occasional gadfly like myself to say, but you don’t have to act on every outside stimulus you get. Of course, you want to remain open to trying new things, test hypotheses, and experiment, but don’t do so at the cost of what you’re already doing unless you know what you are currently doing isn’t working. Think about it; A1 Steak Sauce tastes differently on a hamburger than it does on a pork chop. I imagine it would be dramatically different on an oven-baked cod. Repeat after me; “the same sauce does not always work in every situation.” Each organization has a unique culture, so it stands to reason how not every solution offered in a book or seminar will work equally well, if at all. Most professionals do a so-so job revisiting their vision, mission, and values, and few incorporate them in day-to-day operations. Do that first, and then make sure the new idea will fit in. Need help along the way? Let me know; I know a guy. *** Contact Karl Bimshas Consulting: https://www.bimshasconsulting.com/contact/ The Leadership HotLine: https://roxer.com/karlb *** About Reflections on Leadership: Leadership advisor, writer, and no BS accountability partner, Karl Bimshas, shares quick reflections on leadership, and interviews other busy professionals, to challenge your perspective, provide inspiration, and give insights to help you manage better and lead well.  #277 WTF is Your WFH Policy? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:05:32

The boss or business owners who fear-monger the potential loss of camaraderie, culture, or efficiency are misinformed, ineffective, and have an unfortunate reliance on ego, control, and habit, instead of strategy. Very few people buy the argument that office culture is superior to working from home or remotely. Is there something to be said about the spontaneous and serendipitous mentoring that occurs when people in professional services work in close proximity? Yes, however, it is rare, not guaranteed, and no longer has a dependable ROI. Join a mastermind group or someplace where common interests and ambition to grow overlap, and you'll have that covered. #276 Are You Acting or Taking Action? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:03:39

We too often forget the “United” part of our society. We reclaim it by being of service to each other. Imagine if we became quicker to aid and support and slower to judge, mock, or demonize. Begin making this imperfect place a more perfect union. It will not be easy, but your bit of elbow grease will help make things begin to shine.  Are Great Leaders Born or Made? Who Cares? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:04:43

I frequently get asked if great leaders are born or made. Studies seem to indicate about a third are born with favorable characteristics, and two-thirds are forged by life experiences. If you’re told you were a born leader, you’ll probably act like one. There’s also a strong likelihood you’ll fall into certain traps of entitlement and privilege, which can blind you. If nature and circumstance cause you to act like a leader because no one else has stepped up, or you’re deeply committed and focused on a vision for a better future, would you be successful if you didn’t have the latent capabilities? I don’t particularly care, and to me, it doesn’t matter. Born, raised, forged, or accidental, great leaders who do not deliberately practice and further their development will ultimately decay, and then lousy leaders win. That is unacceptable. How Big Is Your Imagination? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:02:44

You could build a world in your mind, but it will take the help of countless others to make it real. Your ideas are vicarious notions until you capture them on a blank canvass, page, or screen. You try to create without the influence of others, but this is impossible. You persist, and the transference of impressions from your mind’s eye into physical senses begins with a stroke of ink, paint, code, or song, and suddenly they are real. Subject to light and shadow, some will find beauty and wonder – some will see darkness and hate. It’s no longer yours completely, and like a child developing autonomy, this is bittersweet yet good. Others will join in, trying to improve, grow, and capitalize on your work for their own personal motivations, of which you have little control. An ecosystem can form around your initial vision. Industries can grow or shrink because of it, but only if you begin. *** At Karl Bimshas Consulting, our vision is to create environments where great leaders outnumber lousy leaders, and better leadership is the norm, not the exception.  Combat Docility | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:03:50

The challenge of today’s leader is to combat docility. Of course, it’s a dream of those with power to have everyone on your team do everything you want without complaint or question, but that’s how authoritarianism works, not democracy. Maybe your organization is less like a democratic institution and more like a monarchy. There’s your first error. *** At Karl Bimshas Consulting, our vision is to create environments where great leaders outnumber lousy leaders, and better leadership is the norm, not the exception. Your support of the Reflections on Leadership podcast helps move us even closer to that vision.
