We need police officers to enforce the rule of law in our cites, states, and towns. Unfortunately, around the country more and more police officers are turning in their badges before they reach retirement age. Nashville, a rapidly growing city, has a shortage of almost 200 officers and is understaffed for a city that receives thousands of 911 calls. Why do the officers leave? We can easily cite poor leadership, low morale, and inadequate pay. We also know that around the country police officers have been disrespected and harassed often by the people in the communities who need them the most. Joining me today to help us better understand the situation is Stephen Jenkins. Jenkins is a former Nashville police officer with a military background. Abortion and the right to life has taken on a new salience in this country. Across the nation, no less than 5 states including Ohio, Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama have passed heartbeat bills in 2019, banning abortion whenever a heartbeat can be detected. As would be expected, many of these bills have been challenged in federal court and some have been declared unconstitutional because of Roe v. Wade (1973) which legalized abortion in the 50 states. Tennessee, where I live, is debating a heartbeat bill of its own. What is unique about this bill being debated in the state senate is an unusually legal argument that ties the right to life to the Ninth Amendment. The Ninth Amendment states that the enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. Joining me today to explain the reasoning behind heartbeat bills is David Fowler, a lawyer and the founder and President of Family Action Council of Tennessee. Homelessness has become a growing problem for communities across America. Whether the root cause of the problem is mental illness or financial hardship, elected officials are tasked with finding solutions that protect the welfare of the community. Law enforcement officials often become the first point of contact with the homeless. Communities differ in the amount of authority delegated to law enforcement personnel and the range of options available for the less fortunate. We know a lot about the enslavement and emancipation of the black descendants of African slaves. Much less is known, however, about human trafficking in America. Human trafficking is about the continued enslavement of men, women, and children living in our cities and towns. Often, we see human trafficking as simply an international problem. President Trump set up a special commission in 2017 to investigate voter fraud. Kris Kobach headed the investigation which was met with much opposition from Democrats. Unless it serves their immediate interests, Democrats contend that voter fraud does not exist. In fact, they recently voted (HR 1) to lower the voting age to 16 and to make it possible for illegal aliens to vote in certain states. This episode of Be the People focuses on two critical national issues: Voter fraud and President Trump’s efforts to build a wall between America and the southern border.
