Cities and Memory - remixing the world show

Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Summary: Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 6,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 120 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice.  2111: Revolyutsii rainstorm | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 223

Ploshchad Revolyutsii station reimagined by Cities and Memory. Taking an extreme approach to EQing samples from the original recording, we've stripped the very top out to simulate the sounds of rain, and we've EQed right down to the lowest frequencies to represent the sounds of thunder. A light bit of reverb and tape effects to smear the edges of the sounds a little, and we have a rainstorm constructed entirely by EQing the original recording.

Margate sea and dunes reimagined by Submerged Tapes. "I kept the field recording in its entirety and layered up some other sounds made from cassette tape loops, melodica and a square wave oscillator on top.  "The piece is kind of in two parts, I imagined some kind of giant sentient spaceship/insect thing slowly waking up from under the dunes for the first half and then emerging and flying away for the second half leaving just the sound of the field recording again at the end."

2099: Falling from the edge of the world | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 459

The Edge of the World reimagined by Cities and Memory. The piece starts off as quiet as the Edge of the World itself, slowly bringing in externally-sourced wind and nature sounds until we're no longer sure which is the desert wind of the recording and which are newly-introduced winds. Beneath this, a slow bed of synths creeps in to convey something of the awesome sense of isolation that the Edge of the World imposes on anyone who sees it.
