Cities and Memory - remixing the world

Summary: Cities and Memory remixes the world, one sound at a time - a global collaboration between artists and sound recordists all over the world. The project presents an amazingly-diverse array of field recordings from all over the world, but also reimagined, recomposed versions of those recordings as we go on a mission to remix the world. What you'll hear in the podcast are our latest sounds - either a field recording from somewhere in the world, or a remixed new composition based solely on those sounds. Each podcast description tells you more about what you're hearing, and where it came from. There are more than 6,000 sounds featured on our sound map, spread over more than 120 countries and territories. The sounds cover parts of the world as diverse as the hubbub of San Francisco’s main station, traditional fishing women’s songs at Lake Turkana, the sound of computer data centres in Birmingham, spiritual temple chanting in New Taipei City or the hum of the vaporetto engines in Venice.  2171: Rain and Bird on a falling tree entering the city | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 180

Reimagined by AJ Born. "The rain with the bird was nice but quite short. I added some additional sounds and elongated it to 3 minutes:  1\. Someone, cutting a tree in Hambacher forest with a chain saw (from a youtube video). 2\. Trains at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, 3\. Cars and plains recorded at my parents' garden in Hamburg, 4\. Happy children playing in a backyard where I work. 5\. I added a melody that should sound like a musical box."  2170: Peruvian rain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 350

Peruvian rain reimagined by Primitive Acoustics. "The relaxing sounds of rain falling in this recording helped quench my thirsty soul. We have been living in thick smoke from forest fires and drought conditions for the past three months here in southern Oregon. This piece is an expression of the feelings of joy and relief that I imagined we would experience once the rains finally arrived this fall." It ends with modified frog sounds." Part of the Sounding Nature project - for more information, see http://www.citiesandmemory.com/sounding-nature

 2162: Beasts | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 296

Orangutans reimagined by Jake Gaule (Submerged Tapes). "The original recording is of orangutans in Borneo. The calls that they make sounded very aggressive to me so I decided to go down an aggressive route and juxtapose the sounds they were making with some quite intense synthesised sounds. I also made liberal use of pitch shifting and time stretching to distort the vocalisations and chopped up some of the noise to use as percussion/hi-hat type sounds."  2161: Strong winds overlooking a cliff face | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 286

Passo del Lupo reimagined by Sebastian Dumitrescu. "I wanted to create a partly artificial landscape of weather, and it seems that using a real recording works best. The recording of the wind is always present in the piece, and together with it we can also hear some artificial landscapes that are closely controlled using information from the original recording. I thought the original filename (simply describing the content of the recording) was in some way poetic so I decided to keep it as the name of the piece."  2160: Meadow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 202

Jungle House reimagined by Qush Abdul (leholyghost) "I’ve always been fascinated with the sounds of nature and for this project, I felt the urge to create sonic entities that has to do with the whole concept of industrialization and a brief statement about the existence of nature in the cycle of life. Currently, I’m working on a collaborative project and it has a similar concept of issues pertaining to the whole existence of beings.  I started the track with the sample given, manipulated it with effects triggered in automation to stimulate the industrial sound of work and slowly shift the perspective of being in a jungle, forest or in this case the meadow. The voiceover used is from one of my recordings done back when I was doing my diploma in audio production. It fits nicely with the whole concept of the track on how the existence of nature revolves around the cycle of life. The instruments used are mostly electronic samples and plugins and they are created to represent the sounds of animals or creatures in the “meadow”. It is rather dark and tribalistic as I wanted to create the wildlife’s feelings of unhappiness in this sense."
