 Episode 09 - Phil DiBella - King of Coffee & Culture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:45

Episode 09 - Phil DiBella - King of Coffee & Culture This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Phil DiBella - the mastermind behind the DiBella Coffee brand. Phil is an amazing building of culture in the workplace and within teams. He sits on numerous boards, helps out many charities and has sponsored me daughter Alyssa Azar for years so we have a lot of connection points. On top of that he has passion for the sport of boxing like myself. I chose Phil because he is an amazing communicator and really gets his points across in a way that you can helped but be inspired. Bio: He’s one of BRW’s most celebrated entrepreneurs, a philanthropist and one of Australia’s most passionate businessmen. His love affair with coffee and natural people skills have revolutionised the coffee industry. His name is Phillip Di Bella, and he’s the face behind the ever growing, always changing Di Bella Coffee. Phillip’s lifelong passion for coffee began when he was a small boy in his family’s Brisbane home. A budding barista from a young age, his skills led to a career at Brisbane’s landmark Cosmopolitan Café. He backed his flair for business with a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Griffith University to ensure the best was still to come for this promising entrepreneur. In 2002, Phillip launched Di Bella Coffee. A keen observer of people, Phillip was dissatisfied with the level of customer service in the industry and was convinced he had something better to offer. He leased a roaster to craft the first of his exceptional signature blends that have become integral to the global brand Di Bella Coffee is today. He worked hard to promote and share his innovation and vision, initially going door to door to attract clients.. His passion and dedication saw him set up his HQ in Bowen Hills – a new landmark for coffee lovers and a key player in the supply of wholesale coffee to cafes.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

 Episode 08 - Steve Keil - Leadership with a Laser Focus | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:34:12

Episode 08 - Steve Keil - Leadership with a Laser Focus This week I interview one of the best leaders I have personally met. Steve Keil has a relaxed and yet strong leadership style and has a great skill in follow a vision - and what a big vision it is, as he leads the biggest franchise/group in his field in Australia and New Zealand - The Laser Plumbing and Electrical Group. Bio: Steve Keil has spent his career in trade related businesses. His first decade in the workforce was as an electrical contractor before he moved into the corporate world and worked his way up to senior executive roles with one of the leading electrical wholesaling networks. In January 2004 Steve risked it all by leaving his well-paid executive position and founded Laser Plumbing & Electrical in Australia. Laser now has over 130 Electrical and Plumbing contracting companies in their network, employing over 1500 people. Although Laser is a franchise, their values are such that they refer to their franchisees as Members. Laser values a 'servant leadership' model, whereby Laser believes their success will come from first assisting their Members to be successful. Steve is driven by a strong sense of social responsibility, evidenced by Laser's fundraising efforts for beyondblue (over $200,000 in just over a year), and their annual Taskforce, where Laser Members and their employees turn their skills to assist children's charities. Steve also has a passion for assisting Laser's Members to redefine their businesses to best serve the owner and their goals.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 07 - Damien Thomlinson - From Afghanistan to Kokoda and the amazing journey between | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:33

Episode 07 - Damien Thomlinson - from Afghanistan to Kokoda and amazing experiences in between. This week I interview another soldier, that's two weeks straight. Damien Thomlinson really is one out of the box. A Special Forces soldier that lost both of his legs in an IED blast in Afghanistan but didn't let that hold him back. He went on to compete on the World stage in snow boarding, crossed the Kokoda Track in PNG (yes I was there and witnessed this amazing feat) and has even acted in a film directed by Mel Gibson. It's very easy to give up in life when things don't go to plan. We've all had those days and wanted to quit, well i promise after you listen to this podcast with Damien, you will never have that thought again. The mind is stronger than the body will ever be. Bio: The story of Damien Thomlinson, an Australian veteran of the war in Afghanistan, is one that continues to evolve and inspire people around the world. Inspired by the military history of his Grandfather, Damien joined the Australian Defence Force and at the age of just 24 achieved his dream of becoming a Commando. This elite group is tasked with the most physically demanding, mentally challenging and dangerous roles in the armed forces, often behind enemy lines. It was while serving in Afghanistan with the 2nd Commando Regiment that Thomlinson’s life was changed forever. In April 2009, whilst on night patrol in Southern Afghanistan, Damien’s unit drove over an improvised Taliban bomb. Damien suffered horrendous injuries in the explosion, which resulted in both of his legs being amputated. The damage to his body was so severe his medical team claim it is a miracle he wasn’t killed. In fact there were many times throughout his immediate treatment and beyond that medical staff did not think he would pull through. Most people could not imagine recovering and moving on from something as debilitating as the loss of two limbs – but Damien isn’t most people, and giving up is not in his nature. Instead of sinking into depression and retreating from the world, Thomlinson decided to treat the loss of his legs as another challenge to be overcome, a challenge that would forever change his life. With no time for self-pity, Damien threw himself into his rehabilitation and set about re-claiming his life, on his terms – a testament to his incredible drive and determination. With a great deal of commitment and hard work he taught himself to walk again with state of the art prosthetic legs. His inspirational mission has seen him undertake challenges that would faze an able-bodied person, let alone someone with prosthetic legs. He has participated in the TARGA Tasmania classic car rally to raise funds, and has even walked the demanding Kokoda Track – a 96km trek through the jungles of Papua New Guinea. Damien walked Kokoda to remember his best friend Private Scott Palmer, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash one week before returning home to Australia. Private Palmer’s father walked with Thomlinson to honour his son’s memory. A keen surfer prior to his injuries, Damien took up snowboarding as part of his personal challenges during rehabilitation, and in 2011 competed with four other ADF members in the US Marine Corps Paralympic Trials. In 2012 he declared his next challenge – to represent Australia as a snowboarder in the 2014 Winter Paralympics to be held in Russia. He also continues his fundraising initiatives for Legacy, the Commando Welfare Trust and other organisations aimed at raising awareness and funds for injured soldiers and their families. Damien’s triumph against adversity, his positive attitude and ambition for the future has seen him become an inspiration to many. Above all, Thomlinson’s incredible journey stands as proof that no challenge is too great and that the ANZAC spirit truly is alive and well. His next chapter continues to be written as an aspiring Paralympian. You can get in touch with Damien via http://damienthomlinson.com/ &...
