Summary: We are seeing an ever-increasing burden of chronic disease, primarily driven by our food and food system. This is perpetuated by agricultural, food and health care policies that don’t support health. We need to rethink disease and reimagine a food system and a health care system the protects health, unburdens the economy from the weight of obesity and chronic disease, protects the environment, helps reverse climate change and creates a nation of healthy children and citizens. This podcast is a place for deep conversations about the critical issues of our time in the space of health, wellness, food and politics.  Do We Really Want To Get Back To Normal? with John Grossenbacher | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:15

“I can’t breathe” has become a powerful phrase to symbolize the problem of systemic racism and unchecked prejudiced violence in our country. It’s also a powerful metaphor for the weight of how people feel when it comes to the social, economic, and healthcare inequalities that continue to thrive. And in the age of COVID-19, we keep hearing people say they can’t wait to get back to normal. But if this is what normal has looked like, do we really want it? It’s time for us to get more involved than ever before to create a new normal that includes social justice, civil rights, and compassion. On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talked with John Grossenbacher about how to begin this reimagining of America and so much more. John is a Navy veteran, was the Captain of a nuclear attack submarine, and rose to be a Vice Admiral and Commander of the US Submarine Forces. Following the Navy, John became the Director of the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL). INL is a sprawling industrial-scale research facility that covers 900 square miles and employs 4,000 people. There he led science and engineering research in energy, environmental, national, and homeland security fields. He also advised Governors, Senators, Congressmen, state, and local leaders in the region and Canada on energy, environmental, and homeland security matters. Here are more of the details from our interview: Saving the idea of America (3:08)Monopolization of wealth and industry in America (5:29)Managing our way out of the coronavirus pandemic with competence and compassion (8:37)Reforming America’s broken systems (12:26)They mythology of America and the American dream (16:28)Creating a culture of values (22:55)The impact of technology on our lives (25:39)Do we really want to get back to normal? (28:48)Reforming the food system and why you can’t separate the food system from politics (32:13)Learning from history and science, and John’s book recommendations include, “American Gospel” by John Meacham, “Thinking in Systems” by Donella H.  Meat That Is Good For You And The Planet with Fred Provenza | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:31:38

Meat That Is Good For You And The Planet with Fred Provenza | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market, Joovv, and chiliEating a variety of phytonutrients is a powerful way to support optimal health, from things like colorful fruits and veggies. Another really cool side of phytonutrients is the impact they have on making animals healthier, too. In fact, animals who graze on a diverse variety of pasture, with lots of different kinds of wild plants, get an incredible array of phytonutrients. They will even intuitively mix and match their nutritional needs to what plants are available, making sure they get the right balance of vitamins and minerals. Animals who’ve been able to graze like this provide much healthier meat that passes more nutritional benefits along to us. Plus they get to live happier, more natural lives! Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Fred Provenza about the amazing world of phytochemicals and what they can do for animals and our own bodies. Fred grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in WildlifeBiology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in theDepartment of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learninginfluences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us AboutRediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World ofChange; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-authored with Michel Meuret). He has also published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals. This episode was sponsored by Thrive Market, Joovv, and chili.Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule.  Why We Suffer And How Not To with Robert Thurman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:11

Before I became a doctor, I actually studied Buddhism. I wanted to understand the root of human suffering, and through that understand the way to creating happiness. I realized that by becoming a doctor, I could help people alleviate suffering in multiple ways. Better yet, through Functional Medicine, I could get to the root cause of why the body is struggling and correct it from the ground up. My interest in Buddhism was sparked when my sister took me, at just 15 years old, to a lecture by Professor Robert Thurman, the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism. My life has never been the same, and I was thrilled to sit down and tell him that on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Robert Thurman is the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University; President of the Tibet House U.S., a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization; and President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies, a non-profit affiliated with the Center for Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and dedicated to the publication of translations of important artistic and scientific treatises from the Tibetan Tengyur. Time chose Professor Thurman as one of its 25 most influential Americans in 1997, describing him as a “larger than life scholar-activist destined to convey the Dharma, the precious teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, from Asia to America.”*For context this interview was recorded in April 2020Here are more of the details from our interview: Robert’s description of “Buddhism in a nutshell” (11:04)The first Noble Truth (or fact) of Buddhism: Recognizing that we suffer (15:30)The second Noble Truth (or fact) of Buddhism: Misunderstanding that our reality causes suffering (20:13)The third Noble Truth (or fact) of Buddhism: Freedom from suffering (22:44)The fourth Noble Truth (or fact) of Buddhism: The 8-fold path of education, or training (26:24)Using Buddhism as a lens for dealing with COVID-19 and all the resulting suffering (31:02)Changing our relationship to fear through empathy (37:37)Robert’s experience as a young man, traveling to India, and meeting the Dalai Lama (42:16)Robert’s psychedelic experience and how psychedelics be used to treat and educate (45:21)Book recommendations to go inward, and learn more about Buddhist thought and the environmental movement (59:02)Learn more about Robert Thurman at https://bobthurman.com/Follow Robert on Facebook @Robert.A.F.Thurman and on Twitter @bobthurmanListen to Robert’s podcast at https://bobthurman.com/bob-thurman-podcast/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Prolozone and Nutritional Therapy for Osteoarthritis with Dr. George Papanicolaou | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:59

Prolozone and Nutritional Therapy for Osteoarthritis with Dr. George Papanicolaou | This episode is sponsored by AirDoctorMillions of Americans suffer from chronic joint pain, most commonly in the knee, due to osteoarthritis. Conventional medicine typically treats the symptoms of osteoarthritis but does not necessarily do anything to reverse it. Functional Medicine approaches these issues differently, treating and reversing chronic inflammation through lifestyle, diet, botanicals, targeted supplements, and more—including more “out of the box” therapies like ozone and prolozone. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with his colleague, Dr. George Papanicolaou, to discuss their experiences treating chronic joint pain in patients with nutritional and prolozone therapy.George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017. In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss:Traditional therapies for arthritis and joint painWhy obesity is a risk factor for arthritisMicrobiome of the gut can be found in the kneeUsing an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle interventions to treat osteoarthritisWhy going gluten and dairy free, along with eliminating sugar, can improve joint painHow physical therapy can improve osteoarthritisHow ozone and prolozone therapy works, and how it is used to treat arthritis, and how many treatments are typically neededDr. Hyman’s personal experience with ozone treatmentSupporting healing with nutrients How prolozone can rebuild cartilage For more information visit drhyman.com/uwcThis episode is sponsored by AirDoctor.  Speaking Up About The Things That Matter: Hidden Forms of Racism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:20

Like most of you, I’m feeling the heaviness of our national news. The injustice we continue to be reminded of through violent, devastating acts needs to stop. We cannot tolerate a system that ignores equality and deems it acceptable to ignore a human plea for air, for life. On April 4, 2018, on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, I was honored to be asked to speak at Riverside Church in Harlem. The day was focused on MLK Jr.’s fight for civil rights and social justice for minorities and the poor. Today, in lieu of airing our previously planned episode, I am instead sharing that talk I gave at Riverside Church just over two years ago, as an acknowledgment of the targeting of Black lives in our society and the need for systemic change to protect Black health and Black lives. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” We can no longer be silent about this.  The Science Of Creating Happiness with Laurie Santos | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:56

Over 40% of college students report feeling too depressed to function on a daily basis. Over 60% are overwhelmingly anxious. This was not always the case. COVID-19 aside, what is it about our modern times that is leading to stress instead of joy? One of my observations is that we’re meant to be human beings, not humans doing, yet we’re constantly just trying to get things done, to accumulate more possessions, to achieve power and success. But we can reframe our perspective of what matters and focus more on simply being—on sitting, listening, noticing—to improve our happiness and satisfaction in life. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Laurie Santos, is the perfect person to talk to about actively working on increasing our happiness. Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology and the Head of Silliman College at Yale University, as well as the host of the critically acclaimed podcast The Happiness Lab. After observing a disturbing level of unhappiness and anxiety among her students, she began teaching a course entitled "Psychology and the Good Life," which quickly became the most popular course in Yale's history and has also reached almost 2 million people from all over the world online. Although she’s now best known as a "happiness expert,” Santos's research explores the much broader question of "What makes the human mind unique?" and often includes comparing the cognitive capacities of non-human animals to humans. Here are more of the details from our interview: When Laurie began to notice the mental health crisis among her students (2:18)How we are misguided about what will make us happy by our culture and our intuition (5:32)The happiest countries in the world and one likely reason why the United States doesn’t make the list (9:09)How happiness is created through gratitude practices and serving others (12:17)Using social media and our technological devices more productively (22:49)Hacking your stress through your breath, diet, and more (40:24)Exercise your compassion muscle and fight compassion fatigue through metta, or loving kindness meditation (44:34)Creating new habits and rituals to build happiness (50:43)Ways in which the coronavirus pandemic is changing and affecting us (55:08)Post-traumatic growth (58:00)Check out Laurie’s podcast, The Happiness Lab at https://www.happinesslab.fm/ and follow her on Twitter @lauriesantos See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Treating Acne From The Inside Out with Dr. Elizabeth Boham | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:15

Treating Acne From The Inside Out with Dr. Elizabeth Boham | This episode is sponsored by AirDoctorAcne is the #1 skin condition in the United States, affecting not just millions of teenagers but an increasing number of adults as well. We spend over a billion dollars for prescriptions and over-the-counter (OTC) products to cure acne, yet at best these are short-term solutions. Conventional medicine deals with symptoms, so their solutions for acne include lathering on potions and lotions, and taking antibiotics or strong liver-damaging medications. Functional Medicine, on the other hand, addresses the problem’s root cause. From this lens, we can understand that numerous factors contribute to acne, including nutritional status, stress, toxicity, inflammation and hormonal and gut imbalances. In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating acne and other skin issues.Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine as part of my team at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA.  Is Your Food Grown by Oppressed Farmworkers? with Kerry Kennedy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:24

Kerry Kennedy - Is Your Food Grown by Oppressed Farmworkers? | Brought to you by Thrive Market, Athletic Greens, and TheragunSocial injustice is all around us. With the age of COVID-19, we see it in the higher rates of illness in our most underserved communities. On a larger, everyday scale we see it in the exploitation of farmworkers we all rely on to produce our food. Of course, these are only two examples of many human rights issues that we all should be thinking about. We often make a mistake in thinking we’re too insignificant to help. We’re not politicians, lobbyists, philanthropists, so what could we possibly do? The answer is a lot—with each small step of activism we take, we send positive ripples out into our communities and the rest of the world. I was so excited to sit down with my good friend Kerry Kennedy to talk about human rights activism and how her family has historically been a part of producing positive social change. Kerry is the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Since 1981, she has worked on diverse human rights issues including child labor, disappearances, indigenous land rights, judicial independence, freedom of expression, ethnic violence, impunity, women's rights, and the environment. Kerry is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Being Catholic Now, Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope, and Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World. Kerry founded RFK Compass, which convenes biannual meetings of institutional investors who collectively control $5 to $7 trillion in assets to address the impact of human rights violations on investment outcomes. She serves on the boards of the U.S. Institute of Peace, Human Rights First, Ethics in Action, SDG USA, Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa, Health eVillages, Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation, Nizami Ganjavi International Center as well as several public companies. This episode was sponsored by Thrive Market, Athletic Greens, and Theragun.Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule.  How Food Policy Impacts Your Health with Senator Bill Frist, MD | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:20

Maintaining good health is front and center in most of our minds right now, and for good reason. As we take in the latest news on COVID-19 each day, it’s the perfect time to take a deeper look at why some of us are more susceptible to this virus. How can we collectively improve our immunity to combat this pandemic more successfully? How can we protect ourselves in the future? There are many ways. And you won’t be surprised that food and the policies that influence our food system are a huge piece of that puzzle. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I talk with Senator Bill Frist, a politician, doctor, farmer, author, and much more. Senator Frist is a heart and lung transplant surgeon and former U.S. Senate Majority Leader. He represented Tennessee in the U.S. Senate for 12 years and was elected Majority Leader in 2003. He led passage of the 2003 Medicare Modernization Act and the historic PEPFAR HIV/AIDS legislation that has saved millions of lives worldwide.  As the founder and director of the Vanderbilt Multi-Organ Transplant Center, he performed over 150 heart and lung transplants, authored over 100 peer-reviewed medical articles, and published seven books on topics such as bioterrorism, transplantation, and leadership. Throughout this episode, we discuss how a lack of appreciation for data and science among policymakers is affecting how we handle COVID-19, as well as healthcare in general.*For context, this interview was recorded on May 1, 2020.Here are more of the details from our interview: Lack of appreciation for data and science among policymakers, as it relates to COVID-19 and healthcare in general (4:35)Is there an opportunity to improve our food system through policy at this moment in time?  How To Recover From Chronic Lyme And Tick Diseases with Dr. Todd LePine | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:55

Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases often go undiagnosed or are misdiagnosed. This is partially because Lyme mimics other illnesses such as the flu, manifesting as diverse symptoms including headaches, muscle aches, stomach ulcers, constipation, and joint pain, making diagnosing and treating Lyme very difficult. Left unchecked, Lyme symptoms can worsen, creating a long-running inflammatory response and autoimmune illness. Lyme disease, or borreliosis, is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which can proliferate to every area in your body. The good news is that with some work and effort, you can successfully treat Lyme disease. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to identifying and treating chronic Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner.  Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years.  Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body.  His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at   American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging  Medicine (A4M).  Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory.  He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast. This episode is sponsored by AirDoctor.  Do You Have To Eat A Ketogenic Diet All Of The Time To Get Its Benefits? with Mark Sisson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:26

The ketogenic diet has gained a lot of popularity in the past couple of years. If you’re not quite sure what it is, why it could be beneficial, or you’re well-acquainted with it and just want to learn more, this episode is for you. The ketogenic diet, or keto as it’s called, is a high-fat low carbohydrate diet. While some people take this to mean loads of conventionally raised meat and dairy, the true (and beneficial version) means lots of beneficial fats from things like avocados, nuts and seeds, and coconut; high-quality protein from clean sources like grass-fed meat and pasture-raised eggs; and plenty of non-starchy vegetables. To hash out more of the details about keto and how it can support good health, I was excited to talk with my friend and one of the leading voices in the Paleo/Primal and keto movements, Mark Sisson. Mark is the founder of the popular daily health blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, godfather to the Primal food and lifestyle movement, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Keto Reset Diet. His latest book is Keto for Life, where he discusses how he combines the keto diet with a Primal lifestyle for optimal health and longevity. Mark is the author of numerous other books as well, including The Primal Blueprint. This episode is sponsored by Joovv, chili, and my Sleep Master Class.I recently discovered Joovv, a red light therapy device. Red light therapy is a super gentle non-invasive treatment where a device with medical-grade LEDs delivers concentrated light to your skin. It actually helps your cells produce collagen so it improves skin tone and complexion, diminishes signs of aging like wrinkles, and speeds the healing of wounds and scars. Check out the Joovv products at joovv.com/farmacy and use the code FARMACY at checkout. One of the easiest and most effective ways to get better sleep every single night is through temperature regulation, which is why I was so relieved to discover the transformative products from Chili. The chiliPAD and OOLER system are two really cool gadgets that fit over the top of your mattress and use water to control the temperature of your bed - which helps lower your internal temperature and trigger deep relaxing sleep. Right now chili is offering my audience a really great deal. Get 25% off the chiliPAD with code hyman25 or 15% off OOLER with code hyman15, just go to chilitechnology.com/drhymanIn this modern world we place too much value on staying busy and deprioritizing sleep, which is why I have created my first ever Master Class. It guides you through the most important steps to getting better sleep, starting today.  How COVID-19 Shines A Light On Our Broken Food System with Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:18

Only 12% of us in the US are metabolically healthy—it’s pretty alarming when the healthy population is the minority. And in the age of COVID-19, it’s important to recognize that those with a chronic disease are at an exponentially higher risk of hospitalization than someone who is metabolically healthy. If we as a population were healthier (think less obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.), the evidence supports that we’d be faring much better throughout this pandemic. Of course, a major driver of chronic diseases and the risks they create is our food system. We can’t expect to be a resilient population if we aren’t feeding our bodies real food with real nutrients we can use to function optimally. To dig into this topic further, I was excited to sit down with Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dr. Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, Dean and Jean Mayer Professor at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and Professor of Medicine at Tufts Medical School. As one of the top nutrition institutions in the world, the Friedman School’s mission is to produce trusted science, future leaders, and real-world impact. Dr. Mozaffarian has authored more than 400 scientific publications on dietary priorities for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and on evidence-based policy approaches to reduce these burdens in the US and globally. He has served in numerous advisory roles including for the US and Canadian governments and, in 2016, Thomson Reuters named him as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds. For context, this interview was conducted on April 30, 2020.Here are more of the details from our interview: Three ways COVID-19 influences food and nutrition, and visa versa (3:28)How our national health and economic outcomes from COVID-19 might be different were we a metabolically healthy society (7:37)We can improve our metabolic health in real time (9:53)Micronutrients and their potential for preventing and reducing COVID-19 severity (11:32)Strategies to address our chronic disease pandemic and problems with our food system (28:41)How obesity is affecting our military and national security (33:23)Why we need a coordinated national organizing office around food and nutrition policy (48:18)Functional Medicine for our food system (54:55)Obstacles to changing and improving our food system (56:12)Educating policymakers through strategic collaboration among stakeholders (1:00:30)Find the “Report of the 50th Anniversary of the White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health: Honoring the Past, Taking Actions for our Future” at https://sites.tufts.edu/foodnutritionandhealth2019/Follow Dr. Mozaffarian on Twitter @Dmozaffarian.
