Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDarkAlzheimer’s doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s the severe end of a spectrum, that comes after decades of changes have already been occurring in the brain. So why is it that we’ve grown accustomed to dreading this diagnosis, instead of doing what we can to proactively stop it in its tracks? For one, we’ve long been told that once the brain starts downsizing we can’t reverse the process. Now, we know that’s not the case. It’s possible to avoid brain degradation and actually even rebuild it.Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy has been a pioneering detective for Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. Dr. Dale Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer's. Who Should Eat Keto and Why? | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDarkChances are, you’ve heard a lot of buzz about the ketogenic (or keto) diet. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path.Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative.  Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective with Dr. George Papanicolaou | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:39

Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy EarthFor anyone who has experienced shingles, or been around someone who has, you know this can be an incredibly painful condition. Symptoms include rash, hives, and nerve pain. Shingles  are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus tends to hide, or almost hibernate, in nerve cells long after someone has recovered from chickenpox, and can re-emerge as shingles down the line. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss why supporting the immune system is so critical when it comes to preventing and treating shingles, and much more.George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy Earth.Athletic Greens is offering Doctor’s Farmacy listeners a full year supply of their Vitamin D3/K2 Liquid Formula free with your first purchase, plus 5 free travel packs.  How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms with Dr. Elizabeth Boham | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:10

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & FireChanges in environmental mercury levels have been dramatic in recent decades; industrial exposure to mercury is significant and mostly comes from coal-burning and chlor-alkali plants. The more mercury we are exposed to, the more we are likely we are to be toxic. The main ways that humans are exposed to mercury are from contaminated fish and dental amalgams or silver fillings. And while some of us are very good at detoxifying mercury and other toxins, some people have genetic variations (called polymorphisms) that make them more prone to metal toxicity. Mercury can affect nearly all your organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and gut, and many chronic diseases may be caused or worsened by mercury, including neurologic disease, ADHD, autism, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more.In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how they test for, diagnose, and treat mercury toxicity. Dr. Hyman also shares his own personal experience recovering from mercury poisoning.Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA.  How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:38

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelpRacial and ethnic disparities are sadly alive and well when it comes to health outcomes, land ownership, and how food is grown in the US. White farmers are at an overwhelming advantage when it comes to owning land and they see the greatest benefit from the 97% of the income generated by it. Additionally, lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression that sets communities up for generational illness and strife. These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores these topics with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman.Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC.Karen shares her inspiring story of how starting a garden in her backyard in The Bronx led her to understand the bigger issues of food insecurity in underserved communities. As a former physical therapist looking into her patients’ health, she noticed Black and Brown clients were suffering with poor diet and inaccessibility to healthy foods, while white communities were not. Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land. As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs—including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people.  From a young age, Leah had a deep reverence for nature and the land. This led her to learn about historical regenerative farming practices and share that knowledge with others. It also led her to a greater understanding of our food system and why it’s a major propellor in racial inequality. President Johnson’s 1865 overturn of General William Sherman’s “40 acres and a mule” Order had massive implications for the future of Black farmers that we are still feeling the consequences of today. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.
