#165: How to Become Better at Focusing with Dr. Pedram Shojai | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:17

In our unpredictable and continually changing world, we are constantly in a state of figuring out how to create a happy life, which means tending to the needs of our health, career, family and friends, passions, and desires. Unfortunately, time never seems to be on our side, and, if anything, often it seems out of our control. But what if it wasn't? What if you had the ability to take control of how you trade your energy for time and knew how to increase your body's "energy budget" to live your fullest life? On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Pedram Shojai, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Master Herbalist, and Acupuncturist. He is the New York Times bestselling author of The Urban Monk, and The Art of Stopping Time, and the founder of whole.tv and Well.org. His latest book, Focus: Bringing Time, Energy, and Money into Flow, was just released and is about bringing your attention in line with your intention to get the life you want.  In this episode, Dhru and Pedram talk about how to find focus and make meaningful change to create the life we desire, how to balance doing versus being, and why saying “no” and setting boundaries is so important. They discuss what Pedram refers to as “life gardens” and the importance of how we tend to them. They also talk about how the pandemic has forced us, as a society to halt, and why this is such a crucial time to evaluate our lives and hit reset. In this episode, we dive into: -Pedram’s goal setting technique and why it’s so successful (11:46)-How to make a life plan and stick to it (15:20)-Common things that are pulling our attention away from being able to focus (17:58)-How daily meditation can help with attention and focus (21:03)-How Pedram maintains his focus throughout the day, and what he does when his attention gets off track (24:38)-How modern technology is dividing us, and how we are letting the inputs of the world influence us (36:18)-How Pedram became a monk and why he ended up leaving the monastery (37:24) -Breaking expectations that others have of you and the importance of setting boundaries (54:59)-Where you can learn more about Dr. Pedram Shojai (1:00:55) For more on Dr. Pedram Shojai you can follow him on Instagram @official_urbanmonk, on Facebook @PedramShojaiUrbanMonk, on Twitter @PedramShojai, and through his website https://www.theurbanmonk.com.  #164: Monsanto's World of Deception, Greed, and Glyphosate with Carey Gillam | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:06

Known as Monsanto's Roundup by consumers, and as glyphosate by scientists, the world's most popular weed killer is used everywhere from backyard gardens to golf courses to millions of acres of farmland. It's the pesticide on our dinner plates, a chemical so pervasive it’s in the air we breathe, our water, our soil, and even found increasingly in our own bodies. For decades it's been touted as safe enough to drink, but a growing body of evidence indicates just the opposite, with research tying the chemical to cancers and a host of other health threats.   On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Carey Gillam Carey, a veteran investigative journalist and author of Whitewash- The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer and the Corruption of Science. Gillam works now as Research Director for the non-profit US Right to Know and as a columnist for The Guardian. Her second book will be out in early 2021.In this episode, Dhru and Carey talk about the health hazards of glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides, which is most commonly found in the weedkiller Roundup. They discuss Monsanto’s efforts to promote increased uses of glyphosate, and how Monsanto (now Bayer) is facing thousands of lawsuits from customers who now have cancer. They also talk about how most of us are probably consuming several different pesticides in our daily meals, and what we can do to avoid them.  In this episode, we dive into: -Rachel Carson’s warning about the unrestricted use of pesticides (2:42) -How Carey Gillam started reporting on Monsanto and glyphosate (7:01)-Monsanto’s argument for why the world needs GMO foods and Roundup Ready crops (11:59) -The first concerns over the use of glyphosate-based herbicides (15:19)-How Carey became a target of the industry and how Monsanto tried to silence her (17:18) -The deception behind Monsanto and the safety of glyphosate (19:41)-How the public and lawmakers were fooled to believe that glyphosate is safe (23:02) -Lawsuits against Monsanto (30:07) -Why we need to pay attention to what’s happening in our food system and the importance of getting corporate wealth out of Washington (39:59)-The truth about the chemicals in our food and what you can do about it (48:21)-Pesticides in drinking water and rainfall (1:00:38)-Carey’s upcoming book, The Monsanto Papers (1:05:02) For more on Carey Gillam you can follow her on Twitter @careygillam, and through her website https://careygillam.com/.  #163: Do You Need an "Avoid List"? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:43

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit, talks to us about creating an “avoid list”, and how it can help you achieve your goals and dreams. We're all familiar with a to-do list. But most of us have never heard about an “avoid list."  The thing to understand about avoiding things or avoidance is that it's just a code word for fear. There's a great quote from Tony Robbins where he says, "Procrastination is just a code word for fear. But people say it because it sounds more romantic or better. No one just wants to flat out say I'm afraid, but that's exactly what they are." Most people don't even know they are avoiding something. It's often in the background of their mind, and they are trying to make progress on their to-do list in the week, but they keep hitting roadblocks of lack of motivation or lack of excitement. This is where an avoid list can be very powerful! So how does it work?  Take out a blank piece of paper, and ask yourself this question: “Is there anything in my life right now that I'm avoiding or afraid to give attention to”?  Once you have the answer—ask yourself the following questions: -What story do I believe about this topic?-When did I start believing that story?-What's my ideal intention?-How do I want to re-write this story? The quicker we are aware of what we're avoiding or resisting, the quicker we can unravel the story and energy around it. When that happens we are left with the freedom to do anything we want to do. For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #162: Becoming a Food Advocate in Your Own Kitchen with Vani Hari | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:57

We live in a world where our food is making us sick, tired, and overweight. Big Food brands design their packaged products to be addictive, so we over consume unhealthy ingredients, including cheap additives that are banned in other countries. Product labels are deceiving, hiding risky chemicals that contaminate our food and tout approval from organizations we’re led to believe are protecting our health, but in reality are doing anything but that.  On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Vani Hari, the revolutionary food activist behind foodbabe.com, co-founder of organic food brand Truvani, New York Times best selling author of, The Food Babe Way, and Feeding You Lies. She has led campaigns against food giants like Kraft, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Subway and General Mills that attracted more than 500,000 signatures, and led to the removal of several controversial ingredients used by these companies. Through corporate activism, petitions, and social media campaigns, Vani and her Food Babe Army have become one of the most powerful populist forces in the health and food industries. Her drive to change the food system inspired the creation of her new company, Truvani, where she produces real food without added chemicals, products without toxins, and labels without lies. Vani has been profiled in the New York Times and The Atlantic, and has appeared on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, CNN, The Dr. Oz Show, The Doctors, and NPR. In this episode, Dhru and Vani talk about tactics used by the food industry, scientists, and the media to disguise the unnecessary harms in our food supply. They discuss the many food companies selling similar products overseas with healthier ingredients, and why the food industry doesn’t remove these ingredients from their American products. Vani also shares her advice for reading food labels, including the top things we need to look out for, and what it means when a product includes “natural flavors.” In this episode, we dive into: -Vani’s personal health journey that led her to food activism (4:22)-The prevalence of harmful food additives and chemicals in our food supply (11:08)-Individual responsibility vs governments role when it comes to our food choices (18:09) -How Starbucks removed controversial ingredients in their pumpkin spice latte (20:05)-Three question to train your mind to eat real food (33:49)-How Vani consulted with Chick-fil-A to change the ingredients in their food (36:10) -The importance of reading food labels and ingredient lists on our food (44:14)-Recipes highlights from Vani’s new cookbook (48:07)-What “natural flavors” really mean (57:06)For more on Vani Hari you can follow her on Instagram @thefoodbabe, on Facebook @thefoodbabe, on Twitter @thefoodbabe, and through her website https://foodbabe.com/.  #161: 9 Things We Do That Hold Us Back from Our Goals & Dreams with Dhru Purohit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:19

In a culture that’s obsessed with adding things in (we want more, more, more), we can forget how powerful removing things can be. We need to take away that which is preventing us from reaching our goals in order to truly move forward. On this week’s episode of The Broken Brain Podcast, Dhru talks about nine things he commonly sees people doing that hold them back from their goals and dreams (whether they realize it or not). This episode was originally released at the beginning of the year. I’m willing to bet these nine habits will hit home with many of you. Do you obsess over what other people think of you? Do you waste time on social media as a way of avoiding other things? Or maybe you’re the kind of person who is constantly hard on yourself and lives according to other people’s expectations instead of your own desires. There are so many tendencies we fall into, for many different reasons, but that doesn’t mean we’re stuck with them. We can change, we can grow, we can shift our mindset and actions to finally reach those meaningful goals. In this episode, we dive into:-Why we obsess over what others think of us (1:49) -Why we waste time on social media (11:27) -Why we don’t ask for help or support from friends (16:17)-Why we blame everyone instead of looking within (21:17)-Why we avoid setting an intention for the day (25:08)-Why we spend time with the wrong people (29:10)-Why we don’t read books that help us level up (32:28)-Why we live the life that others expect of us, instead of a life true to you (37:11)-Why we are hard on ourselves all day, everyday (44:56)Also mentioned in this episode:-The instagram post that inspired this podcast - https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp2MMvbAudw/-Moss Reports on Cancer by Dr. Ralph Moss - https://www.mossreports.com/-Dr. Elizabeth Boham - http://www.drboham.com/-Broken Brain Podcast episodes on friendship-https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/10/31/bb-ep78/-https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/12/17/why-we-need-deep-and-meaningful-relationships/-https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/06/10/bb-ep122/-https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/09/23/bb-ep153/-Broken Brain Podcast Episode 55 - How to Redesign the Subconscious Mind from Limitation to Freedom with Peter Crone - https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/05/16/bb-ep55/-Broken Brain Podcast Episode 75 - How a Morning Routine, Human Touch, and Nourishing Relationships Can Radically Lower Your Stress with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee - https://drhyman.com/blog/2019/10/10/bb-ep75/-The One Thing by Gary Keller - https://www.the1thing.com/-The Top Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware - https://bronnieware.com/regrets-of-the-dying/-The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle - https://www.amazon.com/Power-Now-Guide-Spiritual-Enlightenment/dp/1577314808-The Landmark Forum - https://www.landmarkworldwide.com/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #160: Getting to the Root of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Dr. Soyona Rafatjah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 54:27

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a widely-diagnosed, yet often misunderstood condition that affects approximately 60 million Americans. IBS is characterized by abdominal pain, discomfort, and changes in bowel habits, and is diagnosed when IBD or celiac disease have been ruled out. In other words, IBS is a “diagnosis of exclusion.” The range of symptoms, poorly defined pathogenesis, and functional nature of IBS make it a notoriously difficult disorder to treat. Because there is no widely recognized cause of IBS in the mainstream medical community, standard treatment is based primarily on symptom suppression and management.  On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Soyona Rafatjah, a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Medical Director and Co-Founder of PrimeHealth in Denver, CO.  PrimeHealth is a team of medical providers and health coaches that provides full-spectrum Functional Medicine and primary care, with an emphasis in treatment and reversal of hypothyroidism and irritable bowel syndrome.Prior to starting PrimeHealth, she was a physician at Parsley Health in New York City, a technology-forward Functional Medicine practice where she was integral to its rapid growth. Dr. Rafatjah worked and received expert mentorship at the renowned Mount Sinai Beth Israel Center for Health and Healing, Dr. Frank Lipman’s Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, and Dr. Robert Rountree’s Boulder Wellcare. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Rafatjah dive deep into the topic of IBS. They discuss the difference between the conventional medicine approach versus the Functional Medicine approach when it comes to testing and treatment options for IBS. They also talk about the importance of identifying food intolerances, and the benefits of a low-FODMAP diet which can significantly reduce the severity of IBS symptoms. In this episode, we dive into:  -Testing for IBS (9:29)-SIBO and the real problem with having the wrong bacteria in the small intestine (17:15)-The carnivore diet for treating IBS (23:17)-Common foods that trigger IBS (27:42) -The relationship between stress and IBS (38:21)-What you can do today to improve your overall gut health (41:57) -Where to learn more about Dr. Rafatjah (50:31)For more on Dr. Rafatjah you can follow her on Instagram @primehealth_denver, on Facebook @primehealthdenver, and through her website https://primehealthdenver.com/.Also mentioned in this episode:-Gut Healing Course - primehealth.teachable.com/p/guthealth. Yoga, in its original form, was created as a science for liberation. In modern times, it is used by many for improving physical and mental health, helping us become more productive at work, more caring in relationships, and more responsible contributors to society and inhabitants of this planet.  #158: This Miracle Molecule will Supercharge Your Health with Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Louis Ignarro | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:10

It was only a few decades ago that people started paying attention to nitric oxide. Named molecule of the year in 1992, it previously had been a pretty undervalued aspect of human health. Several years later, in 1998, three scientists were given a Nobel Prize for their discovery that nitric oxide is a key molecule in the cardiovascular system that helps keep blood vessels healthy and regulates blood pressure. We now know that nitric oxide can boost health in even more ways. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Louis Ignarro, a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of Nitric Oxide (NO), and how it positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for—among other innovations—Viagra. Nitric oxide is currently being utilized all over by hospitals and universities as possible treatment for COVID-19. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his PhD in Pharmacology with over 35 years of experience teaching. Dr. Ignarro is a widely sought-after international speaker on nitric oxide, cardiovascular health, and the importance of nitric oxide to a healthy lifestyle.  #157: The Power of Boundaries, Limits, and Constraints | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:03

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit, talks to us about the power of boundaries, limits, and constraints.  He shares that without some limits and boundaries it’s hard to remain grounded, and without constraints it can be hard to grow. Dhru talks about how constraints build creativity, and he shares with us a few constraints that he played with in the last 10 years:  -Not spending any money on the weekend to become more mindful about his beliefs about money-Only watching tv or movies when he is flying or traveling to become more mindful about time-Not taking on new projects to practice honoring his current commitments-Working on Sunday’s, but not Monday’s to become better at planning and delegating-Avoiding all social media, especially surfing news-feeds, unless he has something meaningful to post-Not dating for a period of time to notice relationship patterns that he was replaying The key word here is “played with.” He played with the constraint as long as it served him, and once it stopped serving him he let it go. This is how constraints build creativity. For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit. What often blocks most people from success and feeling capable in life is the ability to experience, move through, and handle unpleasant feelings, such as sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, and vulnerability. Knowing how to deal with intense, overwhelming, or uncomfortable feelings is essential to building confidence, emotional strength, and resilience. Yet when we distract or disconnect from these feelings, we move away from confidence, health, and our desired pursuits, ultimately undermining our ability to fully realize our ambitions. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Dr. Joan Rosenberg, a psychologist who is known as an innovative thinker, acclaimed speaker, and trainer. They discuss why worrying about what other people think of you is really just a distraction from feeling vulnerable, and why harsh self-criticism is one of the most destructive things we can do to ourselves.  What Actually Makes You Happy? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:20

Science says that only 10% of our happiness comes from our external circumstances—our job and income, relationship status, health and weight, age, and where we live. That means that our happiness is largely up to us and the choices we make, the things we do, and the thoughts we think.  In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Robert Mack and Dr. Laurie Santos about why true happiness is a state of being, and not dependent on external factors, and simple actions you can take today to get on a path to happiness. Robert Mack is an ivy-league-educated Celebrity Happiness Coach, Positive Psychology Expert, Published Author of Happiness from the Inside Out, and TV Host/Personality for OWN and E! Robert’s work has been endorsed by Oprah and many others. Dr. Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology and the Head of Silliman College at Yale University, as well as the host of the critically acclaimed podcast The Happiness Lab.  After observing a disturbing level of unhappiness and anxiety among her students, she began teaching a course entitled "Psychology and the Good Life," which quickly became the most popular course in Yale's history and has also reached almost 2 million people from all over the world through an online version. Find Dhru’s full-length conversation with Robert Mack here: https://broken-brain.lnk.to/RobertMack/Find Dhru’s full-length conversation with Dr. Laurie Santos here: https://broken-brain.lnk.to/lauriesantos/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.
