Do you feel lost or as if something is missing in your life? Maybe you want to make a bigger difference in the world than you feel you are, but you aren't sure how. From the beginning of time people have questioned their place on Earth. Our ancestors stared up at the same stars, and asked themselves the same questions we ask ourselves today. Do I matter? Why am I here? Will my life leave a mark? What’s my purpose? On today’s mini-episode, Dhru speaks with his good friend Alex Banayan, the youngest bestselling business author in American history. His book, The Third Door, chronicles Alex’s seven-year quest to uncover the definitive mindset of exponential growth and success. Over the course of his unprecedented journey, Alex’s research led him to interview the most innovative leaders of the past half-century, including Lady Gaga, Larry King, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Jessica Alba, Quincy Jones, and more.In this episode, they discuss the importance of mindset, and how our growth comes from our mistakes and life experiences. Alex also shares his 30-Day Challenge for uncovering your purpose—whether you are looking to start a new chapter, or finding the energy to keep going on your current path. Find Dhru’s full-length conversation with Alex Banayan here: https://broken-brain.lnk.to/AlexBanayan/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #176: Drop Your Expectations, Step Into Peace | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:01

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! Expectations are stories we tell ourselves about a situation. They are what we want or are attached to happening in life. They can be big or small, but what everyone knows, including you and me, even though we can forget sometimes, is that having a lot of expectations on any other person, situation, or even yourself, is a good way to end up unhappy. What's something in your life that's weighing on you right now, maybe even something that you are disappointed, angry, or even sad about. What sorts of expectations do you have about this area?On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit shares his reflections on four powerful quotes he has come across on the topic of expectations:1) “One reason why so many high achievers are unhappy: their expectations rise faster than their accomplishments. Success is most satisfying when you have high aspirations but modest expectations. You can set ambitious goals without taking it for granted that you’ll attain them.” — Adam Grant, organizational psychologist and TED speaker2) “Instead of creating expectations of what should or should not be happening, cooperate with the form that this moment takes. Bring a 'yes' to the isness, because it's pointless to argue if it already is. A greater intelligence is available to you when you no longer reject, deny, or 'don't want' what is.” — Eckhart Tolle3) “Self-compassion involves being kind to ourselves when life goes awry or we notice something about ourselves we don’t like, rather than being cold or harshly self-critical. It recognizes that the human condition is imperfect, so that we feel connected to others when we fail or suffer rather than feeling separate or isolated. It also involves mindfulness—the recognition and non-judgmental acceptance of painful emotions as they arise in the present moment. Rather than suppressing our pain or else making it into an exaggerated personal soap opera, we see ourselves and our situation clearly.Self-compassion doesn’t demand that we evaluate ourselves positively or that we see ourselves as better than others. Rather, the positive emotions of self-compassion kick in exactly when self-esteem falls down; when we don’t meet our expectations or fail in some way. This means that the sense of intrinsic self-worth inherent in self-compassion is highly stable. It is constantly available to provide us with care and support in times of need. My research and that of my colleagues has shown that self-compassion offers the same benefits as high self-esteem, such as less anxiety and depression and greater happiness. However, it is not associated with the downsides of self-esteem such as narcissism, social comparison or ego-defensiveness.” — Dr. Kristin Neff, Associate Professor Human Development and Culture, Educational Psychology Department, University of Texas at Austin.4) “It’s your own expectations that hurt you. Not the world you live in. Whatever happens in the world is real. What you think should happen is unreal. So many people are hurt by their expectations. You know, you’re not disappointed by the world, you are disappointed by your own projections.” — Jacque Fresco, was an American futurist and self-described social engineer. Also mentioned in this episode:-Why We Should Stop Chasing Self-Esteem and Start Developing Self-Compassion https://self-compassion.org/why-we-should-stop-chasing-self-esteem-and-start-developing-self-compassion/-Broken Brain Podcast Episode 123 - How to Release Self-Criticism and Find Fierce Self-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff - https://drhyman.com/blog/2020/06/11/bb-ep123/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #175: Diagnosing Society: Getting to The Root of Our Mental Health Epidemic with Dr. Omid Naim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:42

Our mental health heavily influences our quality of life, so it makes sense that mental health, just like physical health, needs to be taken care of and maintained. One way that it can be maintained is through finding a sense of community, however, the way we are living today in Western society has created a big problem of loneliness. 60% of Americans report they don’t have a single person to go to in a time of crisis and in a struggle. This disconnection from one another has created endemic loneliness and isolation for many people. Loneliness has been shown to have similar health effects as smoking, or being overweight. The progressive disconnection from ourselves and other human beings is at the root of the problem with the way we are living. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Omid Naim, a Western-trained psychiatrist who came to see the need for more holistic, spiritual, and community-based approaches to health care, by seeing the limitations of the conventional model first hand. He completed General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry residency at the University of California San Francisco, and went on to work in community psychiatry with the most high-risk and severely ill youth in the county coming out of foster care. Dr. Naim is the founder of Hope Integrative Psychiatry, a multi-modal approach for whole person transformation and healing. He also founded the non-profit, La Maida Project, which designs new models for families, communities, and organizations to become ecosystems of optimal health and well-being based on our innate human nature. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Naim talk about why society is so sick, what is contributing to the epidemic of mental health disorders, and how we need a new model for addressing chronic health conditions. They discuss how unresolved trauma and grief underlie most chronic health conditions. They also talk about what it really means to be in community and how we have an innate capacity to heal under proper conditions. In this episode, we dive into: -The current state of society in America and the real problem of loneliness (1:51)-How our stories shape us (11:02)-The birth of the nuclear family and the rise of mental illness (13:32) -How anxiety, distress, and body pains are an expression of what we’re holding onto (14:53)-What community really means and the core conflicts of modern life (18:03)-How disasters and crisis bring out the best in us, and how we heal through connection (24:27)-The power of purpose and the healing process (35:27) -Unresolved childhood trauma and mental health disorders (41:59)-The influence of culture and society on mental health (49:21)-Where listeners can learn more about Dr. Omid Naim (58:23)For more on Dr. Omid Naim you can follow him on Instagram @LaMaidaProject, on Facebook @LaMaidaProject, and through his websites https://www.hopepsychiatry.com/ and https://lamaidaproject.org/.Also mentioned in this episode:-Broken Brain Podcast Episode #20 - Depression and Trauma: Looking Beyond Medications with Dr. Omid Naim - https://drhyman.com/blog/2018/09/14/bb-ep20/-Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging by Sebastian Junger http://www.sebastianjunger.com/tribe-by-sebastian-junger-The True Believer: Thoughts on The Nature of Mass Movements by Eric Hoffer - https://www.amazon.com/True-Believer-Thoughts-Movements-Perennial/dp/0060505915-Study: Older People Are More Likely to Spread Fake News - https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2019-01-09/study-older-people-are-more-susceptible-to-fake-news-more-likely-to-share-it-Researchers Examine When People Are More Susceptible to Fake News - https://www.npr.org/2017/07/18/537844762/researchers-examine-when-people-are-more-susceptible-to-fake-newsFor more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #174: What If It’s Not Depression with Dr. Achina Stein | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:00

More than 60 million Americans are affected by mental health issues every year. While the conventional medicine approach focuses on balancing neurotransmitters in the brain through medication, the Functional Medicine approach is to look for the root cause. There’s a saying in Functional Medicine, “fire in the gut, fire in the brain.” If you have inflammation, or dysbiosis in the gut, then it’s going to produce an inflammatory response that in turn affects the brain. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Achina Stein, an osteopathic physician and board-certified psychiatrist. She is certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and is a certified practitioner of the Institute for Functional Medicine. Dr. Stein has extensive experience working with children and adults who have chronic and persistent mental health problems in the community at large, in the prison population, and in a geriatric inpatient setting. Dr. Stein is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and received the NAMI-RI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2008. She is presently in private practice in Rhode Island, and is the author of the book, What If It’s Not Depression? In this episode, Dr. Stein shares her story of discovering Functional Medicine while searching for answers to her son’s mental health crisis. He suffered from acute depression and suicidal ideation. He was stabilized on three medications and was “out of the woods” in terms of safety, but he wasn’t the same as before the episode. He was still suffering from some debilitating symptoms and had side effects from the medication. Dhru and Dr. Stein discuss the Functional Medicine approach to addressing depression and other mental health disorders. They also talk about the connection between autoimmune conditions and gut health. In this episode, we dive into: -Dr. Stein’s son’s health crisis (2:50) -Celiac disease and brain fog (14:58)-How long it took to notice a shift in her son’s health after taking a Functional Medicine approach (17:50)-What Dr. Stein did to turn around her own health (23:26) -The connection between gut health and autoimmune conditions (26:19)-The 5 R’s of Gut Restoration (34:55)-The inspiration behind Dr. Stein’s book, What If It’s Not Depression? (36:21) -Dr. Stein’s assessments for discovering the root cause of symptoms (44:51)-Where listeners can learn more about Dr. Achina Stein (51:26)For more on Dr. Achina Stein visit her website https://fxnmind.com/.  #173: Gratitude Hack Workshop with Dhru Purohit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:58

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit shares a simple gratitude practice to help supercharge and accelerate our goals and dreams. At the end of the year many of us set New Year's resolutions or an intention for how we want the next year to go. Dhru shares that he sees an interesting pattern as people start to list out their goals and dreams, priorities, habits, and the things they want to give attention and energy to. In the background, there’s this subtle sense of doubt, worry, fear, and hopelessness. Dhru believes this doubt comes from looking backwards and the way we perceive past experiences. Dr. Rick Hanson, a past podcast guest says, “The brain is like Velcro for negative experiences, but Teflon for positive ones.” Our brains have a negativity bias, and it’s tied to our evolution. Our modern brain has evolved to prioritize bad experiences, and deprioritize positive ones. Dhru shares three questions to ask ourselves before we set our goals, which he calls a palette cleanse, that will help us remember that no matter how we feel we did at the end of the month or year, we did the best we could. It also gives us an opportunity to remember how supported we were, and what we did to help other people. Now matter how big or small…1) What’s something tough or challenging that I did this month?2) Who’s someone that did something for me?3) What’s something nice I did for someone else? When you remember these three things it changes your vibration for what you think is possible, and takes you out of negativity bias into positivity bias. Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos who recently passed away said, “No matter what your past has been, you have a spotless future.”Also mentioned in today’s episode:-https://www.rickhanson.net/take-in-the-good/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #171: All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris Kresser | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:52:20

All Things Covid: Vitamin D, Masks and More with Chris KresserAs humans, we often fall into black and white thinking. It can be easy to let the constant waterfall of media information and social snippets wash over us without stopping to think of the full context. In this age of COVID-19, though, it’s more important than ever to pause and look at what the science really has to say. When we slip into confirmation bias and seek out answers that solidify what we already believe, we lose the ability to think critically. Now, more than ever, is the time to change that so we can overcome this pandemic. That’s exactly what Dhru and Chris Kresser talk about on this episode of The Broken Brain Podcast. Chris Kresser is a renowned expert, leading clinician, and top educator in the fields of Functional Medicine and ancestral health, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Cure. Listed among the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, he was awarded “Best Inspirational Voice” and “Best Health & Wellness Website” by Paleo magazine in 2019. Chris founded the Kresser Institute in 2015 to provide the next generation of Functional Health practitioners and coaches with the skills and tools they need to turn the tide of chronic disease—and change the future of medicine. Through the Kresser Institute, Chris created and launched the ADAPT Practitioner and Health Coach Training Programs, and he and his team have trained over 2,000 health professionals around the world in his unique approach. In spring of 2020, largely in response to COVID-19, Chris decided to move on from his position of co-founder and co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine to develop Adapt180 Health: a revolutionary new membership-based Functional Medicine practice and health transformation service. In this episode, Dhru and Chris jump into an open conversation about the most pressing COVID topics and what the latest research is showing. Starting with vitamin D, they look at some dramatic results of several studies, with the takeaway being that a majority of COVID patients have been found to have vitamin D deficiency, and those who are vitamin D deficient have higher inflammatory markers and a higher risk of death.  The Most Common Underlying Causes of Acne (Minisode #16) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:37

Our skin is a reflection of what’s going on with our health beneath the surface. Acne and other skin problems are signals that something is off in our body. Conventional medicine deals with symptoms, so their solutions for acne include lathering on potions and lotions, popping and pricking pimples, and taking antibiotics or strong liver-damaging medications. There’s got to be another way, right?Fortunately, there is with Functional Medicine, which addresses the problem’s root cause. From this lens, we can understand that numerous factors contribute to acne, including nutrition, stress, toxicity, inflammation and hormonal and gut imbalances. That’s actually good news because it empowers us to make dietary and lifestyle changes that reverse acne and improve our overall health without the adverse side effects of pharmaceuticals and other invasive procedures. In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks with Dr. Robin Berzin about the most common underlying causes of acne, and the connection between gut health and skin issues. We discuss why conventional acne treatments don’t actually work, and often end up doing more harm. We also talk about how the cosmetics we use on our skin can increase inflammation which inturn leads to acne, and the best skincare routine and products for someone suffering with acne.Dr. Robin Berzin is the founder and CEO of Parsley Health. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Robin completed medical school at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and trained in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She has also trained in Functional Medicine with the Institute for Functional Medicine, where she is an advisor on digital technology. In 2011 she co-founded the physician communication app Cureatr and subsequently has advised numerous startups in the healthcare space. Robin founded Parsley Health in order to make whole-body, transformative medicine accessible to everyone through better services and smart technology. When she is not at Parsley, you can find her at home in Brooklyn, upstate with her husband, son and two rescue dogs, or at her favorite vinyasa yoga class.Find Dhru’s full-length conversation with Dr. Robin Berzin here: https://broken-brain.lnk.to/DrRobinBerzin/For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #170: How Out of Control Blood Sugar Can Cause Belly Fat, Brain Fog, and Chronic Disease | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:00

Most of us hear the term “metabolic health” and think it only applies to our ability to burn food and manage our weight. And while those are certainly big pieces of metabolic health, it also impacts everything from our cardiovascular health to cognition, mood, infertility, and so much more. That’s because our metabolism is actually our body’s ability to create energy and this happens all over the body. If our energy production in the brain is hindered, we could have memory loss; if it’s not functioning properly in muscle cells, we may see chronic pain—and the list goes on. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, Dr. Casey Means, sits down with Dhru to explain how we can use continuous blood glucose monitoring to dramatically improve our health in all of these ways and beyond. Dr. Casey Means is a Stanford-trained physician, Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of metabolic health company Levels, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention. Her mission is to maximize human potential and reverse the epidemic of preventable chronic disease by empowering individuals with tech-enabled tools that can inform smart, personalized, and sustainable dietary and lifestyle choices.  Dr. Means has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, The Hill, Metabolism, Endocrine Today, Endocrine Web, Well + Good, and Dr. Michael Greger’s (author of How to Not Die) video series. She is an award-winning biomedical researcher, with past research positions at the NIH, Stanford School of Medicine, and NYU. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Means dive deep into the concept of continuous blood glucose monitoring, something Dr. Means is pioneering to make more accessible to the masses, and how we can use that data to truly personalize our diet and lifestyle for optimal health. They discuss how our diet and lifestyle have fundamentally changed in a way that greatly impacts how we regulate blood sugar, and how it’s wreaking havoc on our metabolic health. They also talk about how there is no perfect diet for everyone, and even healthy foods like sweet potatoes may cause a blood sugar spike in one person but be fine for someone else. Seeing this information in real-time lets us make better decisions with immediate pay off for how we feel, as well as long-term protection against chronic disease. In this episode, we dive into:-How metabolic health impacts overall health (3:08) -Healthy foods that could be throwing your blood sugar out of control (15:22) -How a continuous glucose monitor can help you personalize your diet and optimize your health (20:07)-Dhru’s experience using a continuous glucose monitor (24:18)-Why continuously spiking your glucose doesn’t allow you to burn fat (27:56) -How to personalize your diet with a continuous glucose monitor (35:58)-Why a high carbohydrate meal in the evening impacts your sleep (41:10) -The keto diet and metabolic flexibility (54:16)-COVID-19 and metabolic disorder (59:54)-How listeners can sign up for Levels (1:08:35)For more on Dr. Casey Means you can follow her on Instagram @drcaseyskitchen and @levels, on Twitter @levels, and through her website https://www.levelshealth.com/. How do you start your day? Do you jolt awake at the sound of your alarm, or do you mindfully ease into the morning with a healthy meal, exercise, and setting goals for what you plan to accomplish? Your morning can set the tone for your entire day. It can mean the difference between a productive day or a sluggish one, having a powerful ripple effect on your mood, happiness and focus. If you leave your day to chance, you'll likely get sidetracked by distractions, other people's priorities, and find yourself consumed with stress. In this mini-episode, Dhru speaks Dr. Rangan Chatterjee about the importance of a morning routine, and how it can help you be more productive in every aspect of your life. Dr. Chatterjee also shares the three core elements of his morning routine, which includes mindfulness, movement, and mindset practices. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee is regarded as one of the most influential medical doctors in the UK and hosts the most listened to health podcast in the UK and Europe, Feel Better, Live More.  #168: How to Get Better at Trusting Your Gut Intuition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:32

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week! On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit talks to us about how to trust our gut and get better at listening to our intuition. He shares three big ideas on this topic:(1) Practice listening - our intuition doesn’t just speak to us in life’s big events, it speaks to us in life’s small events too. Listening to our intuition in life’s little moments will help us get better at hearing our intuition in life’s bigger moments.(2) Meditate - meditation is one of the ultimate life hacks. If you find yourself struggling to implement a regular meditation practice, try walking. It gets you into nature, and is great for giving you a change in perspective. (3) Find the fear or allow - when people say, “I’m so confused, I don’t know what I want,” it typically means one of two things: (1) “I don’t know what I want, but I feel I should know,” or (2) “I do know what I want, but I’m afraid of the consequences of my decision.”If you don’t know what you want, breathe and slow down. The answer always comes if you are willing to be silent long enough to hear it, and allow things to unfold. A lot of growth happens when we become comfortable being uncomfortable. If you do know what you want, but are afraid of the consequences of your decision, address the fear. Write your fears down on paper—be clear about them, don’t hide from them. Give a name and a face to the monster that is holding you back. Monsters are never as scary as they seem when we can see what they really look like. Most people who say they are confused actually do know what they want, but for some reason they are scared. Scared of making the wrong choice, scared of losing love, scared of failing. Being scared is a great thing, it shows you that you care. But when we stop because we’re scared, we don’t learn the lesson that we were meant to learn. For more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #167: EMDR: A Powerful Therapy for Healing Trauma with Dr. Stephen Dansiger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:13

EMDR therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders, by resolving unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex. While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help. Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings of overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Stephen Dansiger, a master EMDR therapist. Dr. Dansiger developed the MET(T)A Protocol—a system combining Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy—which aims to combine Buddhist Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy. Dr. Dansiger has practiced Buddhist mindfulness for over 30 years, including a one-year residency at a Zen monastery. He is the author of five books covering clinician self-care, Buddhist psychology, anger management, EMDR Therapy, and the 12 step process. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Dansiger talk about how EMDR therapy is different from other therapies, how it affects the brain, and who can benefit from it. Dr. Dansiger also walks us through what an EMDR therapy session looks like, and he shares stories of patients who have experienced EMDR therapy and what it has meant for them in their life.  In this episode, we dive into: -What is EMDR therapy (4:55)-Traumatic memories and where they’re stored in the brain (8:19) -What an EMDR therapy session looks like (13:23)-What happens in the brain that makes EMDR therapy so powerful (26:39)-Case studies from Dr. Dansiger’s practice (35:48)-The best way to explore EMDR therapy and where to find a therapist (42:30)For more on Dr. Dansiger you can follow him on Instagram @drdansiger, on Facebook @drstephendansiger, on Twitter @drdansiger, and through his website http://www.drdansiger.com/Also mentioned in this episode:-EMDR International Association - https://www.emdria.org/-The Institute for Creative Mindfulness - https://www.instituteforcreativemindfulness.com/-Trauma and the 12 Steps: An Inclusive Guide to Enhancing Recovery by Jamie Marich - https://amzn.to/367UuUa-Trauma and the 12 Steps: A Trauma Responsive Workbook by Jamie Marich and Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/36izbiO-Trauma and the 12 Steps: Daily Meditations and Reflections by Jamie Marich and Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/3jYcFAp-Clinical Dharma: A Path for Healers and Helpers by Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/3p5gFmKFor more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit.  #166: Are Root Canals Dangerous? with Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, DDS | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:14

Root canals have become ubiquitous—almost 60 million are performed each year in the United States. “You need a root canal‟ is now almost as common as hearing “you need a filling.” It is the only treatment protocol available to retain a tooth that is diseased. Yet, just how safe are root canals? And, what is the science behind there being a non-toxic alternative to tooth extractions?  On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Rouzita Rashtian, a biological dentist and surgeon. After having earned her undergraduate degree at University of California Los Angeles with high honors in Neuroscience, Dr. Rouzita Rashtian went on to attend the University of Southern California where she completed her degree in doctor of dental surgery.  Dr. Rashtian believes that every individual deserves the highest quality in dental care. She practices utilizing modern health as a platform in helping patients understand the relationship between their mouth and overall health, in her Los Angeles dental office. Her focus is on holistic and biological dentistry; the philosophy recognizing the teeth and associated structures as part of the whole body. Because of this important relationship, she offers a plethora of healthy treatment options, stressing the use of non-toxic materials focusing on the impact that toxins and hidden bacteria can have on cumulative health. She uses minimally invasive techniques to preserve healthy tooth structure and incorporates laser technology and ozone therapy. She holds a SMART certification license through the prestigious International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. She is also a member of the Holistic Dental Association and the International Association of Mercury-safe Dentists and Biomimetic Dentistry. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Rashtian dive deep into the topic of root canals.
