 Episode 81: The Moving Accent | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:42

This week we are going to look at something that's a bit less glamorous than a totally killing harmonic device or something that makes us feel like we are John Coltrane reincarnated. This, however, makes all of the really cool stuff we learn come to life and without it, we just sound like a dud. Accents are what makes jazz sound like jazz. If we don't understand how to use them, we won't be getting gigs anytime soon. In this episode we talk about how to use different accent patterns to create different effects, as a cue to change pitches, and much more. Enjoy the episode!  Episode 80: Voice Leading Templates | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:23

This week we are going to get our listeners to add a little bit of creativity to their practice. Learning vocabulary is a necessity, but we also need to be original in our playing. What if we took the blueprint of something that we know works and put our own spin on it? That is what this week is all about. By creating a great template and then writing our own lines based on it, we get the best of both worlds. Enjoy the episode and your practicing for the week!  Episode 78: Bebop Basics Part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:45

This is the 3rd installment of our bebop basics series. This week we are taking a look at some very useful exercises involving pivoting on chords and scales. A pivot point is essential to keeping our lines interesting and unpredictable. Solos that just sound like arpeggios or running scales get stale fast. By incorporating some pivot points we keep our listeners wanting more and keep even ourselves guessing what we'll do next. Remember that these exercises are all building toward something and aren't an end in themselves. Stay tuned for more of these basics which will form the foundation for many other concepts we will discuss and put into action. Enjoy the episode! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Motivation Monday: Left vs. Right Brain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 6:57

This week we talk about the relationship between left and right brain when we practice and why you should be making time for both.

 Episode 77: Bebop Basics Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:31

Welcome back to another episode covering bebop basics! This week we are looking at playing diatonic chords with chromatic approaches. It is absolutely vital that every jazz musician be able to nail their scales and chords for maximum effectiveness while soloing. If you haven't practiced your diatonic chord structures, you should start there. Once we get this down, it's time to add our chromatic approach tones and make things a little more interesting. Enjoy the episode and be prepared to take this material through all 12 keys. Good luck and have fun! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 76: Bebop Basics Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:47

This week we are starting a multi-part series on what you should be doing to nail down the basics of the bebop style. Bebop is the most important thing to understand when it comes to playing modern jazz as the information provided by these revolutionary musicians informed all music that came after it. You can think of bebop as the building blocks for everything you will play and in this week's episode we get into the must know exercises that come from the world famous musician and teacher, Barry Harris. I have chosen to compile some of his wisdom and present it to you in an easy to follow fashion. The important thing to remember in this episode is that I'm giving all of the exercises to you in C but you must transpose it into all 12 keys to get the full benefit.  Episode 75: Pat Martino On Blue Bossa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:01

Pat Martino is probably my favorite guitar player ever. On an instrument with such a storied history, people like him and Joe Pass still make me smile and tap my foot every time I hear them play. Today we are taking a look at one of his ii-V-i licks over Blue Bossa. This tune is one that every jazz musician should know regardless of skill level. This tune gets called at so many jam sessions and contains some essential chord progressions that everyone should know. Martino uses several devices in this lick that can be of benefit to us. We see him using modes, enclosures, non-harmonic tones, and leading tones all in a very effective way that we can study and use in our own playing.
