 Episode 111: Basic Bass Lines | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:08

Bass lines aren't just for bass players. Everyone should have a basic understanding on how to put together something that works and can get the job done. This week I'll give you my basic system for how to put together a clear bass line that functions. Bass players: understand that I'm not a bass player! This is simply to give someone an idea of how to play something clear and will work for many low pressure situations. In this episode, we explore the bass line system over the circle of fourths and then put it to use over a very famous jazz standard. Enjoy the episode!  Episode 110: The Beautiful Simplicity Of Sonny Rollins | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:29

This week is all about making a statement in the truest sense of the word. All too often we get caught up in playing too many notes and relying on material we already have under our fingers. This is fine, but we want to remember that our music should make a statement. Sonny Rollins is the best example I can think of to break us out of this. Think what you want about Sonny's music, but you can't deny that he can truly make a memorable statement through his instrument. This week we take a look at what such a statement entails and analyze some of the things that make it great. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 109: Bluesifying Major Chords | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:04

Have you ever wondered why some of your favorite players can inject the blues wherever they want? This is because they know when and how to use this particular sound. This week's episode is all about getting some of that sound to come out even when you think it shouldn't work. When we want to use that blues sound, there are some things we need to consider and some scales we can put together to make it happen in a convincing way. Enjoy the episode and I hope to hear more blues in your playing soon! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Have you ever dug into open triads? Have you ever even heard of open triads? I know I hadn't until some years ago and they were a revelation to me when I started shedding them. You have probably used open triads without even realizing it at some point. In this week's episode I want to teach you about this important concept and get you started on a few exercises that will work them into your playing. This is a simple concept with far reaching implications that will change the face of your playing. This week we get into the basics and get you started. Stay tuned for an episode next week where we will actually put this stuff into action and show you some real life examples of where to use this concept. Enjoy!  Episode 106: Testing Yourself On Moment’s Notice Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:49

Last week we talked about developing some natural sounding, original lines over the tune, Moment's Notice. Really getting inside the changes instead of learning how to plug things in is very important over this particular set of changes. This week we are taking things a step further and introducing some new challenges along with the material from last week. Think of this as the next step once you are comfortable performing the tasks from last episode. Make sure you do this stuff slowly and realize that the ability to play over tunes like this is more of a marathon than a sprint. That being said, have fun diving into this week's episode!  Episode 105: Testing Yourself On Moment’s Notice | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:23

This week features one of the most difficult tunes in the jazz canon. At first glance, Coltrane's, Moment's Notice doesn't seem that hard. Then you start playing over it, maybe even at a fast tempo, and everything changes! This tune is not your run of the mill improvisation experience. The difficulty comes from the chromatic movement contained in the ii-v progressions. This episode is all about how to successfully navigate these difficult changes in a way that makes sense and sounds natural by placing some restrictions on our lines. This isn't a tune where we can just cut and paste vocabulary. By breaking out of our normal habits, we learn to play over this tune in a completely different way. Enjoy!
