 Episode 128: Enclosures | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:34

This week's episode is a listener request which I'm thrilled about! We have talked a lot about bebop and some of the devices that are used in this specialized form of improvising. Enclosures are one of the most important devices to have down if you want to play like a bebop master! This week is going to be an introduction to the simplest form of this device. Next week we will take a look at more complicated ways to play them and give you a few more tips and tricks. For now though, enjoy our introduction to enclosures!  Episode 127: The Back Door Cadence Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:05

This week is all about tactile ways to handle the back door cadence that we introduced to you last week. Playing over this progression is similar to any other in the way that we want to examine the voice leading first. While it turns out to be a little bit different in the back door cadence, the principles are the same and it actually results in some brand new sounds for us. I hope you enjoy this episode and never get surprised by a back door resolution from here on out! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 126: The Back Door Cadence | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:27

This week is all about a chord progression that you have probably seen a lot, but maybe never knew what it was called or how it functioned. The back door cadence is a kind of deceptive cadence that appears in many jazz standards. This week, we are going to discuss what it is, how it functions, and give you a couple of examples from a couple of popular jazz standards. Make sure you tune in next week as well when we will talk about the unique aspects of playing over this particular progression and how you can master it for yourself. Enjoy the episode!  Episode 125: The Chromatic Way | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:00

I'm very excited to let you know that we are releasing a brand new book this coming month! The Chromatic Way contains 10 chromatic etudes over some of your favorite jazz standards. Have you ever wanted to sound like your bebop heroes but just need some examples on how to do it? This book is for you! I'm a firm believer that etudes are a fantastic way to learn concepts. Seeing things in action over REAL chord progressions teach us in a way that exercises can't. That's what this book is all about and I had a blast writing it. In this episode we take a look at a small section of one of the tunes. We go over some of the devices used and give you a taste of all that you can get out of this fantastic volume of etudes. Patreon members will receive the entire etude so if you're looking for more, please go and sign up to support the podcast each and every month. Hope you enjoy this episode and keep your ears open for more on the release date and how you can get your hands on this book! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 124: Oliver Nelson’s Idea | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:21

This week is all about an exercise I found in Oliver Nelson's pattern book. Most of the time, when I'm practicing out of a pattern book, it's all about technique. This exercise, however, I was able to apply to my improvisation right away which is why I wanted to show it to you all. This is an awesome pattern that utilizes a pre-determined structure of scale patterns over minor chords. By moving this structure around over a cadence, we come up with all kinds of cool sounds that are very unique. This episode also highlights a way of taking basic information and synthesizing it in a unique way to push your own personal sound forward. Reaching the highest levels of improvisation means thinking outside of the box and turning a seemingly simple exercise into something you can use in multiple situations with multiple variables. This week we continue talking about this great practice tool but, of course, we get more complicated! This episode is all about hearing and effectively using tension with drones as our vehicle. We all know that tension and release is the driving force behind music but can you really hear some of the most often used tensions in jazz? Are you comfortable with them and can you call upon a specififc sound that you hear in your head? If you can't, you're in the right place!  Episode 121: Metronome Exercises Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:54

This week continues our journey on making the metronome the center of our focus. Last week I gave you some deceivingly simle exercises that will make a huge impact on your playing if you take them seriuosly. This week we take things a step further and really challenge ourselves to play some complicated material in perfect time with the metronome. We are looking at triplets of all kinds, sixteenth notes, and then in the final exercises, fluidly switching between them taking our time to the next level. Enjoy the episode!  Episode 120: Metronome Exercises Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:09

This week is all about the metronome. I did an episode way back when that touched on working with the metronome, but this week we are getting a whole lot deeper with it. Do you ever focus your practice time on developing a deep connection with this device? If you don't, it might be a good idea to add this into the mix. Most of us think that the only requirement to having good time is to have the metronome on while we are playing. This is great, but we don't develop that deep understanding of time that is required to make us the musicians we really want to be. This are deceivingly simple exercises that will challenge you if you really try to make them perfect and not just an afterthought. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??
