AcciDental Geniuses

Ugh. Mike’s MacBook Air dies 3 days before he leaves for a 2 week Australia lecture tour and it turns out he hasn’t backed up this computer in, wait for it, 4 months! The pain is evident in his voice as he and Josh go see the geniuses at the Apple Store, and then discuss backing up data, giving Vicodin to emergency patients, peanut butter on waffles, and doing dentistry without gloves. Josh closes the show with a song from NYC-based Vampire Weekend called “Step” which mentions the removal of wisdom teeth.

…but they really only ran 4 miles. The guys discuss running, hurricane naming, earthquakes and Mike talks about his “eye herpes”. The guys also discuss speaking in dentistry, what makes a good room, and whether or not there are good and bad crowds. Mike closes the show with a song from Texas’ finest singer/songwriter Ben Kweller called “Lizzie.”

Mike and Josh take in another ball game, but this time they record a podcast episode live from the front row of Anaheim Stadium. The boys discuss baseball fashion and whether or not the MLB should enforce a uniform rule and Josh fondly reminisces about the 1976 Chicago Cubs and how they wore banana smuggler shorts and collared shirts. Mike has to GTS to prove to himself Josh is not lying. The guys discuss whether it was right for one of Mike’s female friends to date her proctologist after he performed hemorrhoid surgery on her.

The guys are forced to do their first Skype podcast together instead of getting to stare into each others eyes, and Mike wonders what effect men getting genital implants would have on the other males that make up their circle of friends. Josh confesses to pulling the fake cell phone call on one of his own employees, and shares the story about potential police harassment from Texas, while Mike shares a story of police benevolence from his childhood. Josh discloses his barbeque obsession with the Big Green Egg.

Mike wakes up first, sees Josh’s seemingly lifeless body and contemplates a multitude of pranks before finally just poking him with a stick to start recording some early morning pod. The lads discuss high school summer jobs, and after putting Mike to shame with his SAT score, Josh confesses the name of his high school was “Health Careers High School”, not exactly the stuff of Friday Night Lights. No wonder the other high schools in Texas has a special name for Josh and the other students at HCSC. Go Mighty Stethoscopes! Mike and Josh fondly recall their dental school cadavers, and whether or not they will donate their bodies to their alma mater to let the students dissect them.

Mike has to be in Chicago for a lecture, Josh has to be there for an ADA meeting, so we decide to do our first remote podcast from a hotel room. The one we are sharing for the night. With only one bed. The general rule of thumb is three dates, but it took 7 episodes until we finally hooked up, way longer than it did last season on The Bachelor. It’s past midnight at the end of a long day, and as we get ready for bed together, Mike confesses about the time he cried as a dentist, and Josh talks about throwing a football helmet in the office. We discuss our favorite music and movies, then turn off the lights and regret not having two beds, let alone two rooms. P.S. We learned our lesson about running the music though Josh’s mic channel, and his voice disappears when the music is on, and we swear, on the lives of our patients, that it probably won’t happen again.

Josh and Mike attend a baseball game with their life partners, and in the blink of an eye, Josh goes from polite conversation to having his face buried in Mike’s girlfriends lap. WARNING: Do not try this unless you are certified sexy! Turns out that Josh is to foul balls, as pigs are to truffles—he’s got a real nose for them. As a result, Josh and Mike get some well deserved face time on national TV via the Rangers broadcast (the clip is at accidentalgeniusespod.com). Not knowing they were on TV, neither had time to yell BABA BOOEY or lift their shirts to show their matching Accidental Geniuses tattoos. The boys also discuss their mentors in the dental world, and how they have affected their careers.

In this episode, Josh has lots of triathlon questions for Mike, who has recently been trying to convince Josh they should do one together. Josh announces he has finished his requirements for his Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry, and Mike is duly impressed as Josh must be one of the youngest dentists to accomplish this. He is certainly he sexiest! The guys discuss pre-made composite veneers and how much they hate this concept. Josh gets Mike to spill the beans (and a yam) regarding what happens when nature calls during a run, one of Josh's biggest fears.

Mike and Josh go through some dental journals and can’t believe some of the ad’s that some dental companies are running, including a lab that will give you a free Rolex after you send 350 cases.

Mike outs Josh for being named one of the Top 10 Sexiest Bachelors in San Antonio, a charity event for the Wounded Warrior Project. Josh gets catty about his fellow competitors as well.
