Pastor With No Answers Podcast

Summary: Joey Svendsen, formerly of BadChristian Podcast, is a pastor who found freedom in gladly embracing mystery and relinquishing his long list of theological “certainties.” Growing up a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian, he now explores faith through progressive lenses while continuing connection with evangelicals, many who are part of the church he pastors at. Join Joey, his regular commentators and many special guests (progressives, traditionalists and evangelicals alike) as they discuss God and the Bible. Hear about Joey's experiences with mental illness. Reflect with us on stories of tragedy.  203 - The Epidemic of Womanizing | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:42:54

Therapist, Andrew J. Bauman, unapologetically lays out the current epidemic of womanizing. So how about the men who are sincere in their desire to honor women but may not be aware of the blind-spots that keep them from doing it? How do we honor female beauty but not mentally devour it? Bauman outlines how even the “good guys” have issues with this that need to be acknowledged, dealt with, and humbly fought against. Womanizing is an epidemic that has to be taken seriously; with all male’s hands on deck.  202 - Getting Jesus Wrong | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:42:28

A large part of western Christianity has made Jesus a life coach who gives us an agenda to follow, spiritual requirements to check off of our list; and are missing the point. What if the real point was receiving hope and passing that hope along to others? Instead, we are all busy trying harder and either getting full of pride because we’re mastering the ways of Jesus or getting full of despair because a we just can’t measure up. Matt Johnson, author of Getting Jesus Wrong, claims that the death and resurrection of Jesus is the antidote to “doing more” and “trying harder.” He also feels that deconstructing isn’t so simple and typically stems from a privileged point of view. Author of this book, Steve McAllister, lived his life without money for one whole year. He’s got some very interesting thoughts on focusing on the red letters of Jesus, dismantling our male-dominance culture and even ideas about universal basic income. He believes we are living in great times of dismantling corrupt governmental structures for the sake of amazing change for this world.  198 - Eastern Orthodoxy | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:38:19

Most of us are familiar with Catholicism and Protestantism but Easter Orthodox, not so much.  Matt Hinton and Father Chris, both in the band Luxury (first two releases on Tooth and Nail Records) drop in to school us all on the second largest sect of Christianity.  After a lengthy discussion of its origins, we look into eastern orthodox approaches to scripture, the afterlife, the rapture, evangelism and various other subject matter common to Christianity.  When it’s all said and done, at the end of the episode, we treat you to one of their songs.   Chase down the guys in Luxury:  https://www.facebook.com/parallellovefilm/ support this podcast: https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod follow this podcast: https://www.facebook.com/PWNApod/ join the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk/ follow joey on T and I: @joeysvendsen

197 - We Choose What We Believe About the Bible (w/ Bonnie Lewis) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:43:43

These are my words, not hers, but it’s true.  Each of us who uphold the bible as a special book are all doing the best we can to make sense of it. Even when one is convinced God is guiding her personally,  he is still making a decision to trust that gut feeling and believe that specific way.  Sidenote: humility would always serve us well when considering anything involving “hearing God.”  Bonnie is writing a new translation of the bible.  You can read about it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1945582321/timshel-an-idiomatic-bible-translation

196 - The Future of the Mega Church, Jesus’ Divinity, the Law, etc (w/ Jack Hoey) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:59:36

Jack Hoey joins us again to help us make sense of Jesus being fully God but not fully knowing. And why should we listen to Paul’s other teachings when he was erringly convinced on a very significant belief that Jesus would come back during Paul’s lifetime? We also talk a lot about mega churches, their eventual demise and even an Old Testament passage that endorses abortion.  195 - That Big Church in Charlotte (w/ former intern James Floyd) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:48:25

*Special note below on this episode* We talk about a famous pastor of a huge church with a former intern who learned the culture of this church from being on the inside. From staff being required to stand up when this Pastor walks into a room to him being presented in the same light as prophets in the bible, many are left wondering, who is this guy and how can some one be so far off the mark of Jesus’ example? How does he justify his actions? Who are his followers and why are they following? Do the onlookers from the outside just not have the full picture of what’s going on? After hearing about James’ experiences at this church, we speculate about the leader, wonder about who he is behind the scenes and lastly, we make some guesses about his future. *Special note* One of the last questions presented to our guests had to do with "this going viral." The basis of the question was Furtick spontaneously making an "apology video" on his own accord (unrelated to this episode) and that video going viral; not "this Svenzone episode going viral," forcing a PR response. The intent of this episode wasn't soliciting a response, nor are there any lofty ideas of this episode going viral. Podcasting is hard. -- Joey support this podcast: https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod follow this podcast: https://www.facebook.com/PWNApod/ join the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk/ follow joey on T and I: @joeysvendsen

Russell shares his perspective of the early Tooth and Nail days, which included their debut of Joe Christmas’ Upstairs Overlooking and followed by sophomore release North to the Future.  We talk about the flack Joe Christmas received from Christian “music fans,” for the band not being Christian enough, we hear how these guys initially  connected to Tooth and Nail Records and we get an inside scoop of who these guys were as people when they weren’t rocking that noisy garage sound indie flavor..

 190 - Parenting Good Enough (-101): Video Game confession | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:06:46

I actually don’t want you to listen to this episode, it’s embarrassing; my real frustrations getting smoked in video games with my sons. Video games should be a fun escape, something to do when you’re hanging out. I managed to turn it into a bad lesson for my kids.
