Pastor With No Answers Podcast

Summary: Joey Svendsen, formerly of BadChristian Podcast, is a pastor who found freedom in gladly embracing mystery and relinquishing his long list of theological “certainties.” Growing up a fundamentalist, evangelical Christian, he now explores faith through progressive lenses while continuing connection with evangelicals, many who are part of the church he pastors at. Join Joey, his regular commentators and many special guests (progressives, traditionalists and evangelicals alike) as they discuss God and the Bible. Hear about Joey's experiences with mental illness. Reflect with us on stories of tragedy.  234 - Diminished Heroic Women of Faith (w/ Kat Armas) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:39

At the top of the episode, Jory Micah, John Mark McMillan, and Joey discuss the level of importance that spiritual experience is to their faith. In our interview with Kat Armas (theologian, author and podcast host of The Protagonistas Podcast), she recounts her journey out of Evangelicalism and introduces us to the beautiful picture of "Abuelita (Grandmother) Theology." Speaking on the Bible as culturally written by men and for men, Kat shows us how easy it is to overlook the great faith of women in the bible, some of whom are completely unnamed. The question also begs to be asked that in our every day life, are the greatest theologians we've ever known those we'd never consider theologians in the first place? We also discuss a myriad of other topics including her journey out of American evangelicalism, pronouns for God, maltreatment of women in the bible, and how the "Good Book," while it strengthens our faith, our love for God and humanity, can (and maybe should) also cause lament, anguish and wrestling in our hearts. Welcoming John Mark and Jory Micah to the show as they will be kicking off the next few episodes with some dialogue about an assortment of topics, today, our reaction to a Relevant Magazine article on Francis Chan’s being “on fire,” supernaturally healing everyone he touches. As each of us has changed greatly in our faith, we discuss our current view on supernatural healing.  232 - Bullied by "Tolerant" Christians on Twitter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:16:38

I’ve seen firsthand that fundamentalism takes on many different forms, even in many circles full of people who believe they kissed fundamentalism away many years ago. A couple of days ago, these folks taught me very clearly, “Do not engage with us again, unless you become just like us.” My sincere questions apparently represented to them laziness, a lack of empathy and deemed me an unsafe person for them to correspond with. Makes me want to double down on loving. Everyone. Even these folks. Because interaction with me isn't invited by these brothers and sisters, I’ll have to do that from afar.  231 - “Bad Words” In Front of Your Kids & All Things Teens (w/ Dr. Ken Wilgus) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:03

Author of “Feeding the Mouth that Bites You” and co-host of a Podcast under same title, Dr. Kenneth Wilgus’ approach to raising teens always delivers great and unique insight. Today, we talk a bit about teens shutting parents out, daughters starting to date and whether it is possible for a middleclass family to raise kids who aren’t spoiled. Before this interview, Joey, Natalie and John discuss cussing in front of your kids. Joey also shares perhaps the funniest dad story in the history of mankind. Yes, that’s a big claim.  230 - Brian McLaren, Why Does Jesus Sound So Harsh? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:52:37

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. “If you don’t forgive others, I won’t forgive you.” “It’s going to be easier for those cities than it will be for you on the day of judgement.” “Depart from me I never knew you.” “Anyone who talks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven.” Jesus’ words sound so judgmental, unloving, unforgiving, and quite frankly, full of anger. And he sounds like this a lot. It’s a bit bothersome and seems conflictive with his actions of love and surrender. Talking to Brian McLaren about this months ago was so helpful to me personally, I had to rehash with some microphones so you can benefit as well. There’s so much going on culturally with Jesus’ words and so many interpretive factors people typically are unaware of. One may not agree with the light McLaren sheds on all of this, but it's hard to argue his historical knowledge of those times which obviously is very relevant to gaining an understanding of Jesus' words.  229 - Joey Grilled by an Atheist on the “Bible Says What?!?” Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:09:39

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. Michael Wiseman has a podcast that puts Christians (more specifically, Pastors) on the hot-seat by throwing their beliefs on “the grill” of atheism. As always, he has some very good points to ponder. I enjoyed getting grilled although it may not bid well for my intellectual reputation. One of the topics addressed was the seemingly “mean-spirited, short-fused, threatening” side of Jesus we encounter through some of his harsh words read in the gospels. Next week, on this podcast, we’ll have the wonderful Brian McLaren to dissect these very intense words said by the Savior himself, giving us a deeper, fuller picture of what is actually being said.  228 - COVID 19: Trump to blame? Economy Doomed? Conspiracy? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:58

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. One of the smarter people in my life, Jack Hoey, answers multiple questions pertaining to problems revolving around coronavirus. If we’re trillions in debt, why not get in trillions more by a way larger stimulus? Do we now have a worse problem by shutting everything down? Why didn’t we act faster? How fast will the economy rebound? Why don’t we leave old and health-comprised people at home while a younger, healthier demographic holds down the fort at work? Trump to blame, economy doomed? Conspiracy? One man's opinion.  227 - JGivens, Hip Hop Artist: His Story of Coming Out | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:27:24

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. JGivens, known by many in “Christian rap” circles, sits down with Joey and his wife Pricilla to tell his story of perseverance, personal growth, and a new gained perspective of people, the soul and the world we live in. We hear about his family dynamics, upbringing, his journey coming out as openly gay, surviving addiction, and the love and support received from family and friends. Like many others who have come out as gay, Jeremiah was under the microscope of numerous Christians, many of whom were callously hateful and shallowly judgmental. JGivens, folks; the talented, stunningly creative Hip-Hop emcee, gifts us with sharing his life. By the way, his brilliance isn’t limited to his music; as you’ll hear in this interview, it also radiates through his words. It’s like the dude’s native tongue is poetry.  226 - Ed Stetzer, Greg Surratt // COVID-19, the Church | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:35:21

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. Episode Description: Ed Stetzer has some gracious but urgent words of admonition. It’s time for churches to stop prioritizing internal delivery systems, online church and broadcasting so they can focus on preparations for serving our communities in an unprecedented crisis that happens to be right around the corner. Will we practice what we preach, trust God over our false comforts and walk in the footsteps of Jesus? We also discuss practical steps for churches to take right now and ponder what it might look like to sacrifice our health and well-being for the service of others.  225 - Pastoring In An Evangelical Church as a Non-Evangelical | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:14:27

SPECIAL NOTE Our hearts are connected with everyone in this current season, those stressed, fearful of unknown, in physical or financial peril. If this podcast brings a smile and an opportunity for light-heartedness even for a moment, we’ve done our job. Here’s to Team humanity. episode description: I’ve had quite the faith journey that has landed me in a very different headspace. It’s been extremely hard at times and I’m very grateful I’m still here. The love we share within my church family is undeniable. The main things we agree on are all I need to feel deeply connected. This may not be the best road for all, but for those who love their church family and despite seeing faith and the world differently, can’t live without, I think I have some helpful thoughts. Today’s Focus: Let’s knock off the dualistic thinking. People are good. People are bad. The church is good. The church is bad. What are we to do? Maybe Jesus, love and understanding are a good start? Hip-Hop Art creator, Derek Minor, schools us in hip-hop culture, highlighting its disconnect with society’s drive to be “woke.” He also brings an admonition to have more patience for people’s normal maturation processes, including those of young hip-hop artists. Our current “cancel culture” doesn’t honor the human journey. Derek also shares the current nature of his career and how calm and blessed he feels in this new corona-virus world we live in. We also discuss the devastating blow for private business owners and musicians. John and Natalie also assess Joey’s conservative view of the 2020 Super Bowl half-time show.  223 - My Name is Anthony and I’m Going to Die | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:47

Anthony Woodle agreed to spend time with us reflecting on his current season of making peace with knowing his time left on earth is profoundly limited. At the age of 29, as he comes to terms with death’s eminence, Anthony is happy with what he’s accomplished and satisfied with how his time was spent.  221 - How Sure Can I Be God is Speaking to Me? (a Debate) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:44

Two guests who are regulars and part of the PWNA family, Jack Hoey (father) and Chip Judd iron out their contrasting views on how we interact with God and what we can and can’t be sure of, including whether God even exists in the first place. Joey explains how his peace with and closeness to God feels way more palpable and vibrant when he stays in a space of “I believe with all my heart, but I really also can’t know.” (This conversation begins at 10:30 mark) Episode beings with an uncomfortable interview that Joey conducts with one who struggles with mental illness. It sounds like Joey but given his ultra-evangelical/fundamentalist slant and minimizing of mental illness during the whole interview, it’s hard to make sense of this one (wink, wink).  220 - Universalistic Views of The Afterlife & Trump’s Report Card | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:17

Joey, Natalie, and John discuss God’s character in relation to different beliefs on the afterlife. Is Universalism in the mix as a valid position for a Christian to hold? How does a God who condemns billions to hell line up with a God of love? Do people believe in universalism merely because it feels better? How much can our faith be based on our experience? How do we raise our kids in light of our own doubts and evolution of faith? Jack Hoey (the father) also sits down with Joey to discuss the presidential term of Donald Trump, some bad things and yes, some good things. By the way, I (Joey) don’t think Calvinists are universally despicable. Clowning around as always.
