Whoo-eee! This season has been on fire for the last few episodes and this one kept the momentum going. Can you believe what June did?!? In this podcast, C and I examine SEVERAL possible unintended consequences of what she did (or didn't do). Plus, we found out whether or not Serena set up Fred in the previous episode! So many liars. Joseph lied to June. Serena lied to Fred. June lied to Winslow. Then did other stuff to him, too. This week carries through with the momentum started in last week's episode in fine style. These are pretty big plot and character moments for our little cast of characters. Is this all building to a huge season finale in a couple of weeks? We sure hope so. Now we know what they do in Gilead instead of watching TV at night, am I right? Just invite yourself over to a neighbor's house to witness their ceremony night and treat yourself to their snacks while the magic happens upstairs. I'm sure that everyone will have a great time and feel really close when the night's frivolity comes to an end. At least the groove which June seemed to get back last week looks like it's found a way to get some traction with the other handmaids. She took a while to figure out that she's going to need a lot of help to get Hannah back and out of Gilead. But has she found the right leverage? Or will we all have to witness another season ending with June still stuck in Gilead? (Please, no.) This is a big one for us, guys. A couple of weeks ago, Hulu presented us with the chance to talk to Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia) about The Handmaid's Tale. We jumped at the chance. We've known Ann's work with complex characters since she played Patti Levin on The Leftovers, so getting a chance to talk to her was a dream come true. This episode fits the interview inside the usual podcast review we've been making since the show started. If you really need to jump ahead, look around the six-minute mark for Ann's interview. We talk with her about Lydia's motivations and what makes her tick. As usual, definitely watch episode 308 "Unfit" before listening! Everyone is busy trying to sort out the crazy happenings in Hawkins. All of our teams can't figure that they're all on the same side and they're in trouble. Joyce and Hopper are off to a bad start. Max and Elle toy with their boys' emotions. Nancy and Jonathan can't get a break at the Post. AND Dustin, Steve, and Robin have stumbled onto the evilest villains of all (at least in the 80s), the Russians! The Duffer Brothers may be my favorite creators in Hollywood right now. If the Stranger Things Season 3 Premiere is any indicator, then we are in for a darker, deeper dive into Stranger Things mythos. Just in these first two episodes, we catch up with all of the old gang and where they are in their lives, plus a look at this season's monster. This one felt like a season one flashback in some ways. The handmaids return to their roles in public "partici-cutions", something we haven't see them do since the "Janine Rebellion". Definitely reminds us that our characters still very much live "under his eye" as the title reminds us. Some will say nothing happened in this episode, God Bless the Child. I'd point out, here and in the podcast, that we saw a lot of character related movement this week. Last week, Serena, seemed to decide on a path forward. This week, she and June seemed to form an alliance. But that's not all June was up to - she still has some sway over Fred. She's putting her influence to use on Serena's behalf while positioning Serena to benefit from it. Then there's all the stuff between Janine and Lydia. This podcast covers the final episode released for the season 3 opener - a pretty good episode called "Useful". Our favorite new scarf model and apex of amorality, Commander Lawrence, has a lot to say about the concept of "usefulness" and teases at June all episode long about it. Early on, viewers received little info to try and suss out Lawrence's true intentions. This episode didn't exactly spill the beans on that topic, but we got to have a much closer look at the man than ever before.
