 Annual Profections: A Basic Time-Lord Technique | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:06:54

Episode 153 of the podcast is a recording of a webinar by Chris Brennan on an ancient timing technique known as annual profections, which is used to make yearly predictions about a person's life. The lecture begins by introducing the concept of time-lord techniques in Hellenistic astrology, and how they are used to determine when the natal potential or promise of certain placements in the birth chart will become awakened in the life of the native. We then go into a detailed treatment of the basic method of using annual profections, and how to use the technique to make yearly forecasts and predictions, starting from the day of a person's birthday or solar return. In particular we focus on identifying the main planetary ruler of the year, known as the lord of the year, and how to determine what topics or themes are likely to arise in the native's life when this planet is activated, based on how it is situated in the birth chart. This episode is available in both an audio-only version and a video version, and you can find links to both below.  Discussing Jung’s Studies in Astrology by Liz Greene | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:02:29

In episode 152 of the podcast Laura London and Jenn Zahrt join me to discuss a new book by Liz Greene titled Jung's Studies in Astrology: Prophecy, Magic, and the Qualities of Time. In the book Dr. Greene traces various modern and ancient sources that influenced Carl Jung's views on astrology, which in turn helped to shape his approach to psychology and some of the major concepts that he introduced in his work. The purpose of this episode of the podcast was to discuss the book, and some of the thoughts we had after reading it over the past week. This book is the first of two volumes that were published at the same time, and you can find more information about each on Amazon: Jung's Studies in Astrology: Prophecy, Magic, and the Qualities of Time The Astrological World of Jung’s Liber Novus: Daimons, Gods, and the Planetary Journey We decided to restrict this discussion to just volume 1, and hope to record a followup podcast at some point about volume 2, which deals with The Red Book by Jung. This is a followup episode that is meant to complement two previous discussions about Jung over the past few months, the first with Safron Rossi about her book Jung on Astrology, and the second with Keiron Le Grice about Jung's concept of synchronicity. Laura London is the host of the Speaking of Jung Podcast, where she interviews Jungian analysts about a wide variety of topics related to Jung's work and thought. Jenn Zahrt specializes in the study of astrology in Germany in the early 20th century, and previously appeared on the podcast to discuss the life and work of Elsbeth Ebertin.  Astrology Podcasters Q&A Trialogue | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:44

In episode 151 of the podcast I met up in person with fellow astrology podcasters Adam Sommer and Eugenia Krok, and we spent the afternoon answering questions that were sent in by listeners of our shows. In this episode we cover topics ranging from our experiences with running a podcast and how we got started, to feelings around exchanging money for astrological consultations, and advice for newer astrologers about mistakes we made early in our careers. Background Info We met at Adam's house in Boulder, on a snowy afternoon in Colorado. Somehow all three of us run successful astrology podcasts and live in Colorado, but we have never gotten together at the same time to record an episode. Since Eugenia is moving out of the country soon, we decided to take this last opportunity to record a discussion. I brought some recording equipment that I've slowly been accumulating over the past few years, as I've been using some of the money donated by patrons through my page on Patreon to work towards building an in person podcasting studio. This was my first time really putting some of that equipment to use, and it went pretty well! Three Episodes We decided to make a full day of it, and to record three separate podcast episodes for each of our shows that afternoon, where we responded to questions from listeners of each of our podcasts. Each of us is then going to release a portion of the discussion we had that day as an episode on our respective podcasts. The first episode we recorded was this one, for The Astrology Podcast, and then the second part of this discussion will be released soon by Adam on the Exploring Astrology Podcast, and then the third part will be released by Eugenia on the Bridging Realities Podcast. Be sure to subscribe to Adam and Eugenia's podcasts to get notified as soon as parts 2 and 3 of this discussion are available. Questions Discussed in This Episode Here are some of the questions submitted by listeners that were used as starting points for the discussion in this episode on The Astrology Podcast: * What are your podcast origin stories, and how did you get started, or why did you want to start a podcast? * Maria F: In what way has running a podcast affected your consultation practice? * Belinda T: Do any of you schedule your podcasts, articles, etc. using astrological techniques? * Christina C: I'm curious if ancient astrologers earned a living as professionals on their work with astrology. I ask because in some astrology and New Age circles there seems to be shame around earning a living as an astrologer because its considered a 'spiritual practice' by many. * Maren A: Advice for newer astrologers, or mistakes you made as a younger astrologer that you look back on now. In Adam's episode, which will be released on his podcast later, we focused on talking about Uranus' ingress into Taurus, and the relevance of that transit for things like cryptocurrency. In Eugenia's episode we discussed what happens when you feel like you are missing the mark in an astrological consultation, as well as a few other questions. Watch the Video Version of This Episode I recorded both an audio and a video version of this discussion. The audio quality on the purely audio version is a bit higher than the audio in the video version, but they are both pretty good. You can watch the video version on my YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5ymoA45RAM ☿

Jung on Synchronicity and the Mechanism for Astrology | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:38:54

In episode 148 of the podcast Keiron Le Grice joins the show to talk about Carl Jung's theory of synchronicity, and its applicability to astrology as a possible explanatory mechanism. Keiron is the author of the recent book Jung on Astrology, which was discussed in episode 141 with his co-author Saffron Rossi, as well as the book The Archetypal Cosmos. In Jung on Astrology Keiron identified seven distinct theories of astrology that Jung entertained during the course of his life, and in this episode we have a wide-ranging discussion about Jung's views on each of these possible mechanisms. Keiron is a professor of depth psychology and archetypal cosmology, and chair of the Jungian and Archetypal Studies specialization at Pacifica Graduate Institute. For more information about his work see his website www.keironlegrice.com Below you will find the show notes, which contain some of the points we touched on in the episode, followed by links to download or stream the recording of the discussion. Show Notes * Introducing Keiron and talking about his background. * What is synchronicity? * Meaningful coincidence. * Of subjective and objective happenings. * An acausal connecting principle. * Golden scarab beetle story as paradigmatic case of synchronicity. * Characteristics of a synchronistic experience: * Meaning, coincidence of inner/outer, improbable, uncanny, archetypal, numinous, purposive, acausal. * Why is synchronicity important? Demonstrates the following: * Meaning exists outside of human consciousness. * Relationship between mind-matter, psyche-cosmos may be more fluid. * Synchronicity as a guide to individuation. Finding the self. * Synchronicity as applied to astrology. * Generally a modern reformulation of/replacement for theory of correspondence * As contrasted with causal influence of the planets. * Causal conceptualization had been dominant since Ptolemy in 2nd century. * The place of synchronicity in Jung’s explanations of astrology * Jung’s entertained multiple explanations of astrology. * Up to seven possible explanations, with some overlap and contradictions. * Each examined in seven sections in Part IV of Jung on Astrology. * 1) Sympathy of all things, microcosm-macrocosm correspondence. * As above, so below. * Mirroring * Common in esoteric thought, but also Stoicism. * Incorporates world soul idea. Anima Mundi. * 2) A projection of the collective unconscious into the heavens. * Comes up especially in his works on mundane astrology. * Partially derived from his conclusions about precession. * Astrological meanings come from archetypes in the unconscious psyche. * Implies that the astrologer is working under a bit of a delusion. * Runs into an issue with whether the unconscious is purely internal or external. * 3) Divination. * Largely comes from his failed statistical experiment on synastry. * Initially he thought it was causal, but later decided he had influenced the outcome * Maggie Hyde’s Synchronicity I and II from Jung and Astrology.

The Elephant in the Room | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:07

Episode 147 of the podcast features a discussion with Rick Levine about a recent controversy in the astrological community that centered on a lecture that Glenn Perry gave at a conference in India attacking the sidereal zodiac. Background on the Discussion The event was the 28th International Vedic Astrology Conference, which took place in Kolkata, India, from January 30 – February 4, 2018. The conference was held under the auspices of the Krishnamurti Institute of Vedic Culture for Public Welfare. This year was unique because there was an open call for speakers, and more than 40 western astrologers gave talks at the conference. On February 1, Glenn Perry gave a 30-minute presentation at the conference, arguing that the tropical zodiac is the one true zodiac and the sidereal zodiac is wrong. This presentation was given to an audience of Indian astrologers, where the sidereal zodiac has been the primary reference system for centuries. The talk was widely viewed as disrespectful, both by Indian and western astrologers who attended the conference, not so much for the points argued in the talk but instead due to the tone, which came off as mean-spirited and divisive in what was otherwise set up as a more conciliatory east meets west conference. There was a lot of discussion about the talk online after it occurred, and a number of people filed complaints with the International Society for Astrological Research (ISAR), since Perry was representing them at the conference as their ethics chair, research director, and longtime board member. As a result of the controversy and subsequent complaints from the membership, he was eventually given an ultimatum by the ISAR board to either step down as ethics chair, or leave the board entirely, and he chose to leave the board. The purpose of this discussion with Rick was to talk about the incident and hear what happened first-hand, since he was there in the room when the lecture was given, and also to get some background on other incidents like this one in the past, in order better contextualize what happened and why the community backlash was so strong. Original Lecture Video and Video Commentary A video recording of Perry's lecture was released by the director of the conference, Gopal Bhattacharjee, in order to help set the record straight about what happened. You can view that video on Gopal's YouTube page here. Gopal also gave me permission to record a commentary on the lecture, in order to highlight some of the problems with it, and you can view that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP5gLTgFYaQ This video complements the broader discussion that was recorded with Rick for this episode of the podcast, although it was not meant to replace it, and you can find the links to download the audio recording of the discussion with Rick below.  The Origins of Horary Astrology | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:57:52

In episode 145 astrologer and academic historian Levente László joins the show to talk about the origins of the fourth branch of western astrology, known as horary astrology. The focus of the episode is the mysterious origins of horary astrology, and the question of when and how it was originally developed. As discussed in episode 116, horary astrology is the practice of casting an astrological chart for the moment of a question, and then attempting to answer the outcome of the question based on the analysis of that chart. There are some questions about the origins of horary astrology because in the later astrological traditions from the 9th century forward it became a very popular and widely used practice, but in the Hellenistic tradition from the 1st century BCE through the 7th century CE references to horary are distinctly rare. During the course of this discussion we review some of the evidence for horary in the Hellenistic tradition, and try to reconstruct the history of how it developed. Below you will find the show notes, which contain some of the points we touched on in the episode, followed by links to download or stream the recording of the discussion. Show Notes * In the Medieval and Renaissance traditions, horary was a very popular practice. * From the 8th through the 17th centuries. * It became the 4th branch of the tradition, after mundane, natal, and electional. * A chart is cast for when a question is posed to an astrologer. * The astrologer tries to answer the outcome of the question based on the chart. * Often largely using the rulers of the houses and their perfection or lack thereof. * Terminology * Originally called "questions", "interrogations", “inquiries”. * Byzantine Greek erotesis, Arabic masa'il, Sanskrit prasna. * William Lilly in the 17th century called it "horary astrology questions". * This eventually became shortened to "horary astrology". * It is immediately apparent that there is little to no discussion of horary in Hellenistic. * This raises the question of why? * Was horary practiced then, and we just don’t have much evidence of it? * Or was horary not around yet during that early period? Developed later? * I published a paper in the NCGR journal in 2007 on this titled the Katarche of Horary. * Up until that point everyone assumed horary was practiced in the Hellenistic trad * My thoughts have grown and changed since then, but some core points still good. * None of the Greco-Roman skeptics mention horary or criticize it. * Odd since Cicero, Augustine, and Sextus mention all three other branches. * Natal seems to have been the primary practice, some electional, and even less mundane * The Hellenistic evidence for horary really comes down to two or three sources: * A few references in book 5 of Dorotheus, which is on electional. * A few 5th century horoscopes from Zeno’s astrologer, including three about ships. * Some passages attributed to Hermes of uncertain date. * Yavanajataka. * That is pretty much it. * The first full treatments of horary don’t appear until the later in the 8th and 9th centuries. * Theophilus, Masha’allah, and Sahl ibn Bishr. * See the recent discussion about Theophilus of Edessa with Ben Dyke...

Secondary Progressions: Every Day Symbolizes A Year | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:01:58

In episode 144 of the podcast astrologer Kelly Surtees joins the show to talk about a popular timing technique known as secondary progressions, where every day of the native's life symbolizes an entire year. In this episode we talk about how to calculate secondary progressions, as well as how to identify important turning points and phases in a person's life with the technique. During the course of the show we discuss the interpretation of retrograde stations, progressed aspects, secondary progressed lunation phases, and more. Below you will find the show notes, with an outline of some of the points touched on in the discussion, followed by links to stream or download the recording of the episode. This episode is available in both an audio and video versions, and you can find links to both recordings below. Secondary Progressions Notes * Became one of the most common timing techniques in modern astrology, second only to transits. * Evidently only became popular in the past few centuries. * Holden thought that Kepler was the first to mention it. * Valens may have mentioned it briefly in the 2nd century. * Different symbolic ways of moving the chart forward. * Transits are the actual movements of the planets in the future. * Profections advance the planets by one sign per year. * Primary directions advance them via rising times of the signs. * Solar Arcs one degree per year. * Secondary Progressions one day per year * Sun moves one degree per year * Moon moves one degree per month (approximately) * After the native is born, every day of their life is equated to one year * Their first day of life is the same as their first year * Second day of life is like the second year. * To work this out go to an ephemeris for your day of birth. That’s year 0. Day 2 of life = year 1 and so on until you get to your current age. * Link to the Astrodienst online ephemeris * Basically you take the live transits from the first few months of birth * Think about the sign changes or new and full moons that happened in the first 3 months of life. These form part of your progressions. * Minor events that happen at the beginning of life become major events later on. * So what are some important transits in the first months of life? * Important alignments to pay attention to in the progressed chart: * Lunations * Secondary progressed lunation cycle hugely important * Especially New Moons and Full Moons as major life epochs * Retrograde and direct stations. * Planets stationing retrograde or direct often signal major turning points in the life. * Also speed changes in general. * Exact aspects * When do applying aspects in the birth chart go exact? * When do secondary progressed planets aspect positions in the natal chart? * Ingresses * When do planets change signs? * SP Sun changes signs at least every 30 years More Information About Secondary Progressions For more information about secondary progressions, check out Kelly's predicting with progressions online astrology webinar series: * Online Astrology Webinar: Introduction to Predicting with Progression *

Q&A: Seeing Clients, House Meanings & Newbie Books | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:06

In episode 143 of the podcast astrologer Kelly Surtees joins the show to help answer some questions that were submitted by listeners of the podcast over the past few days. The questions discussed in this episode include things like "how do you know when you are ready to become a professional astrologer?", "why are certain houses often treated as more important than others?", and "what are some good astrology books for newbies?" Below you will find the episode notes, with each of the questions we covered in this episode, followed by links to stream or download the recording of the discussion. This episode is available in both an audio and/or video versions, and you can find links to both recordings below. News and Announcements * Chris has a new workshop recording available for purchase, titled Timing Peaks in Your Love Life: Zodiacal Releasing from the Lot of Eros. * Kelly recently launched a new monthly astrology video forecast service called Stellar Insights Monthly. * Kelly is also presenting a webinar on February 24 titled Your Progressed Venus – Timing Trends in Love and Life. Questions Answered in This Episode Here is an outline of some of the questions from listeners that we discussed in this episode. The indented questions are ones that we answered from other listeners that seemed to be on the same topic as the one listed above. * When did you know you were ready to start practicing astrology professionally? (Charging people other than friends & families charts) And what jobs did you both have in the meantime while learning astrology ? * What do you ask clients prior to a session (or at the start of the session) in order to set appropriate expectations? (Sometimes, clients comes with the idea that astrologers are like psychics.) * Why does there seem to be more attention given to the Ascendant and Midheaven than the Descendant and Nadir? Do you consider all four points equally important? * Do you or Kelly have a preferred order that you refer to the houses as you delineate a natal chart? For example, do you go sequentially or do you prefer to go in order of related areas of life such as 2nd, 6th, then 10th and so on? * The strange concept that the 12th house is hidden and cadent when actually the Sun rises into 12th, lights up the sky. There is nothing hidden about the 12th houses. Whereas the 6th sinks below the horizon and definitely hides planets and the Sun. Why is that??? * Advice to make the most out of the United Astrology Conference (UAC) this year. * What are some good first books for the baby astrology enthusiast? I want to take classes in the future (can’t right now), and so I’m looking to do something productive in the meantime! * Answer: see Chris' video on this: Top 6 Astrology Books for Beginners * (This is more of a list for total beginners, and some of the recommendations may not be as suitable for intermediate students) * I am writing from São Paulo, Brazil, and would like to know if you think it is possible to delineate a "school of thought" based on the several authors who have written about astrology since the XXth century. Would it make sense to put in the same category the books written by, say, Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo? How the student of astrology can have a more focused understanding of the matter by knowing whi...

Is Astrology Becoming More or Less Popular? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:23

In episode 139 of the podcast astrologers Dayna Lynn Nuckolls and Jessica Lanyadoo join the show to talk about whether astrology is becoming more or less popular in society. This question arose as a discussion topic recently in the astrological community after some recent media coverage of astrology, which included a piece in the New York Times titled How Astrology Took Over the Internet. During the course of the show we discuss some different areas of growth and possible decline, as well as some of the nuances and difficulties associated with accurately gauging interest in astrology due to changing trends in publishing, technology, and culture. The discussion ends up focusing on how the transformation of traditional gatekeeping structures, such as the book publishing industry, do seem to have led to an increase in the popularity of the subject in recent times, as well as greater diversity among both consumers and practitioners of astrology.
