Mufti Ismail ibn Musa Menk explains the meaning behind the 29th surah of the Qur'an, Surah al-Ankabut in Harare, Zimbabwe.
"Verily we have honoured the Children of Adam. We carry them on the land and the sea, and have made provision of good things for them, and have preferred them above many of those whom We created with a marked preferment." Quran 17:70
In this khutba, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani discusses how Allah (Most High) has commanded us to rush to the Friday prayer with a certain purpose, that purpose is the remembrance of Allah. The rush in here is the rushing of concern, not the physical rush. He further goes into detail about what is meant by the 'remembrance of Allah'; it entails two senses: [1] The remembrance of Allah itself because the prayer IS an act of remembrance of Allah. [2] That which reminds of you Allah, i.e. the khutba, that which reminds you of how to rectify your relationship with Allah (Most High). The key to rectifying one's relationship is the quality of taqwa, of having mindfulness of Allah.
It is the time of year where the word "love" is paraded about, amidst a wave of cards, chocolates and flowers. But is there more? Love is so central to our sense of self that its presence (or absence) influences every aspect of our perception and interactions with the world around us. We are often quick to profess our love, in all its mundane and metaphysical forms, from loving the physical, to loving another person to loving the Divine. Ultimately however, the proof of our love lies not in our words but how that love affects who we are and what we do.
