John’s Rant: This week I will rant on nothing in particular at all, since it has been such a busy week, not that I am complaining or anything I enjoy busy much better than slow. Also I would like to mention that there may be news on one of my most popular articles that of dealing with the WordPress loading issue. Since I had to redo so old research I decide to focus on a single plugin this week after placing a fair amount of time into it. The plugin this week is Event Espresso. This is a paid plugin that is not just an events calendar, what I was in need of for a client was a calendar that would list classes and a simple way for people to register online. The other necessity was to be as easy as possible for my clients to use since they are not the web junkie that I am. After re-checking several plugins I had tested in the past for handling events and after checking with a couple folks for additional referrals I found Event Espresso. This plugin is not only easy to use by the average user but also a great addition to any website wanting to have an online registration system for any event. It also has some great support from thier forums area, I had a couple of questions I just placed them in the forum and within 24hrs I had an answer, it was great. This week’s episode is about what we consider the most important plugins to setup when installing or cleaning up your WordPress installation. Before we get into that though here is this week’s rant on: Rant on social media and the stupidity around it. Yes folks we all did or do stupid things when we are kids, I for one am thankful that Facebook, Twitter and all the other social media did not exist when I was a kid. People seem to use no care when they post stuff online and don’t seem to realize that what they put there can and will be found and used against them if at all possible. Just a little side note about plugins, you may find that sometimes you will have sudden issues with your site that where not there before. What I discovered about this is that you need to recheck your plugin usage from time to time. You may have plugins that worked well together then when one or the other is updated they quit playing well together. That is when it is time to rethink the plugins your using and remove the ones that are no longer necessary. Heat Maps, Live Chat Software, Real Time Analytics | Lucky Orange - 2 weeks free and then $7 a month, usable from wordpress, allows you to spy on visitors ZigOut place the scarlet A on your site for the Athest out campaing..

WordPress Plugins from A to Z this week The Developer Tools Plugin by KJ Meath This week is our first guest interview and we hope you will enjoy it. What we are covering is the recently released plugin called Developer Tools by KJ Meath which is a very robust plugin and can be enjoyed by developers as well as a user. Although may features might be above the regular user level there are features that will be of benefit to an average user and will allow for the removal of some plugins they may already be using. To borrow some text from their own descriptions here is what the plugin is all about. “The Developer Tools plugin creates an admin user interface for many of the code-enabled features in WordPress and commonly used JavaScript libraries.  It also generates template code for theme development.” From the little experimentation I have done with it this plugin is looking like it will be pretty beneficial, the hardest part I see with adopting it is remembering to use it instead of other things I have come to depend on. Well this podcast is about Jetpack and its features before we get started on that  I just wanted to let you know that next week we are interviewing KJ Meath about his plugin developer tools Now back to our coverage on  Jetpack by automatic which you can get here. Many who know me know I am a big advocate of controlling as much of your data as possible and relinquishing as little as possible to other services. Well the new plugin by Automatic Jetpack for WordPress.org was released last week and it seems that everyone is talking about how great it is. So I thought we should do a podcast on it to let you know what we thing about it. I am actually not so sure I am a fan of jetpack now that I have had a chance to install and use it. Seems that you don’t actually get to control anything when it’s installed. You have to have a Wordpress.com account and then connect it to your .org setup. The states program while being lightweight and placing no additional load on your system has all the data residing on their server. You have no control over how all the parts of the plugin work since they will not work unless connected to their service. While on the whole I see nothing wrong with this there is always the obvious question what about the future. As we all know companies change their mind and users are often left holding the bag here is a great excerpt from their site “”Jetpack itself is, and always will be free. Some individual features that Jetpack provides will be free, but others in the future may require payment. Installing Jetpack is free and requires no payment information.” So in a nutshell you may get used to a service and then all of a sudden you have to pay for it or it will get crippled and to get everything you were used to you have to pay for it. I have a great example there with Hootsuite.. Nonetheless the plugin works well and does require less of a load on your server and it even adds a few cool toys to your site. You get your stats in your admin bar if you still have it turned on. There is very little to configure it is all automatic. About the only real useful plugins it adds I can see is wp.me link shortener although it is not automatic you have to do some manual clicking to get the link. I also noticed this evening when preparing for the podcast that Jetpack seems to have caused a bit of a firestorm around the fact that you have to register to use the plug in. I was not aware of it but it seems from what I was able to gather from all the tweets and posts that to have a plugin in the repository you cannot force someone to register or pay for it. Seems that WordPress is violating their own rules. Not only with Jetpack but also with Akismet.
