Getting Better Acquainted show

Getting Better Acquainted

Summary: A weekly podcast of selected highlights from the SUT live show: A new night where people get up on stage and do some tragedy: part cabaret, part variety show. Come and let some great performers make you sad, make you think and make you smile. Sometimes they’ll be putting a new twist on what they do with brand new material tailored towards the theme. Expect music, comedy, true stories and more, all playing up to the tragic form but not taking it too seriously. The night will end, not with a whimper, not with a bang, but with a cathartic sing-a-long. Brought to you by Sony Radio Award nominated writer, musician and performer Dave Pickering, this monthly show will be recorded and released as a free weekly podcast at www.standuptragedy.co.uk and through iTunes.

 GBA 106 Jack and George | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:51

In GBA 106 we get better acquainted with Jack and George. Whilst drinking brandy & chain-smoking Jack, George and me trade differing views of the legal system and ask whether you change significantly after childhood: what stays the same and what changes. This episode includes an account of being arrested for destroying a house, an account of being a witness to an assault, an account of a bus kidnapping and the curious case of the police confiscating George's Lou Reed collection. It's an interesting ride: Part surprise therapy session, part series of complimentary and contradictory experiences of the law and part documentation of a friendship. We actually don't sound as drunk as we were! We don't really plug anything. Part 1 of The GBA 100th Episode Special: To celebrate 100 episodes of the show I gathered a bunch of my favourite people together in a room and made them sit and listen to a special live episode of the show.  GBA Live 5 Chris Goode and Karl James | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:52:14

Episode 5 of GBA Live: 5 conversations recorded as part of my Invisible Picture Palace (http://invisiblepicturepalace.com/) residency for In the Dark Radio (http://www.inthedarkradio.org/) that took place in November 2012. These episodes are going to come out daily in the week leading up to the GBA 100 two-part special. Each one has a different audience of people who came out to a greenhouse in Wapping to be a part of the conversation. Today we get we get even better acquainted with return guests Chris Goode and Karl James. Both have had individual conversations, this is the first time they have appeared on GBA together. http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-38-karl-james http://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-83-chris-goode This was a very surprising and interesting conversation which is really hard to sum up in a blurb. It moves through themes of performance, listening, provocation, violence, shame, authority, empathy, difference, therapy, forgiveness and more. All this spills out of the starting point of two projects which Chris and Karl have collaborated on. A piece by Tim Crouch called The Author which seems to have had a powerful effect on audiences but also on Chris who acted in it and Karl who co-directed it. And the more recent Monkey Bars, a piece of theatre where adults perform verbatim dialogue originally spoken by children. This conversation went to places I hadn't expected it too and was a challenging and rewarding experience.
