Getting Better Acquainted show

Getting Better Acquainted

Summary: A weekly podcast of selected highlights from the SUT live show: A new night where people get up on stage and do some tragedy: part cabaret, part variety show. Come and let some great performers make you sad, make you think and make you smile. Sometimes they’ll be putting a new twist on what they do with brand new material tailored towards the theme. Expect music, comedy, true stories and more, all playing up to the tragic form but not taking it too seriously. The night will end, not with a whimper, not with a bang, but with a cathartic sing-a-long. Brought to you by Sony Radio Award nominated writer, musician and performer Dave Pickering, this monthly show will be recorded and released as a free weekly podcast at www.standuptragedy.co.uk and through iTunes.

 GBA 285 - Wild Goose Road Trips, 1969 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:25

GBA 285 is a special episode of Getting Better Acquainted. It's two parts monologue and one part interview as my dad tells the story of two road trips he made across America in 1969 to film in American coal mines on behalf of the British Coal Board. We get better acquainted with him and the places and people he met. This is an edited version of some recordings I made with him before GBA had even started, so it doesn't fit the usual format. It all feels like an slightly absurd and possibly a touch melancholic comedy, perhaps directed by The Cohen Brothers or Wes Anderson, and one day I hope to make a film or book about it. You can get even better acquainted with my dad by listening to the episodes he has been on previously: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/sets/the-dad-episodes We mention: Francis Gyson: http://www.bfi.org.uk/films-tv-people/4ce2b9ef24bf0 Coal Board: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Coal_Board Paul Rotha: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Rotha Donald Alexander: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/1144929/ Mustang: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang The Beatles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles Cary Grant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cary_Grant Moon Landing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_landing Mining Review: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/894075/ Around the World in 80 Days: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Around_the_World_in_80_Days_(1956_film) Patrick: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-109-patrick June: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/sets/the-mum-episodes-1 Sheila: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/gba-117-sheila Help more people get better acquainted.  GBA 278 Dad #6 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:39:14

In GBA 278 we get even better acquainted with my dad. We sit down to talk about his working life making documentary films about the coal mining industry and the communities who provided it their labour, and we do touch on that frequently, but we also end up talking about lots and lots of other things. Threading through the conversation are the changes, both physical and mental, that have happened to my dad over the last few years. He's currently 92 so the underlying themes of the conversation are memory, age and death. In GBA 277 we get better acquainted with Zack. He talks acting, therapy, art, activism, politics, that time he wen't a bit viral for heckling Jeremy Corbyn, how he views the political landscape of party politics as someone who has tried to create social change from within the system, being a hypnotherapist who doesn't believe in hypnotism and so much more. This conversation was recorded in a busy cafe on Zack's birthday, in a world where Donald Trump was not yet President Elect.  GBA 276 Rob Auton | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:21:18

In GBA 276 we get better acquainted with Rob Auton. He talks about finding words, what driving lessons taught him about art, what exactly it is that he does, trying to find the right balance of confidence and worry, and so much more. As I try to fit him into boxes like introvert, depression and wizard, he nimbly avoids all the labels and reaches instead for the specifics and universals of this strange experience we call being human.
