GBA 278 Dad #6

Getting Better Acquainted show

Summary: In GBA 278 we get even better acquainted with my dad. We sit down to talk about his working life making documentary films about the coal mining industry and the communities who provided it their labour, and we do touch on that frequently, but we also end up talking about lots and lots of other things. Threading through the conversation are the changes, both physical and mental, that have happened to my dad over the last few years. He's currently 92 so the underlying themes of the conversation are memory, age and death. Content Note: Dementia, old age, death, bereavement, assisted suicide, structural oppression Past dad episodes: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/sets/the-dad-episodes Dad plugs: Andre Gorz: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_Gorz Critique of Economic Reason: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Critique-Economic-Reason-Radical-Thinkers/dp/1844676676/ Reclaiming Work: Beyond the Wage-Based Society: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reclaiming-Work-Beyond-Wage-based-Society/dp/0745621279/ Farewell to the Working Class: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Farewell-Working-Class-Post-Industrial-Socialism/dp/0861043642/ Letter to D: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Letter-D-Andre-Gorz/dp/0745646778/ I plug: The Family Tree: http://thefamilytreepodcast.co.uk/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thefamilytreepodcast We mention: Thatcher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Thatcher Wolfgang Suschitzky: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Suschitzky https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/oct/07/wolfgang-suschitzky-obituary Data Cooperative: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0302636/ BFI: http://www.bfi.org.uk/ Harry Rée: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_R%C3%A9e My dad and Harry Rée: http://zlistdeadlist.tumblr.com/post/142372305681/s06e5-the-spys-wife-who-loved-me Paul Rotha: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Rotha My dad's first film: Sabotage, 1942 http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/watch-sabotage-1942/ National Coal Board https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Coal_Board Citizen Kane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Kane Orson Welles: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orson_Welles Apples for Everyone: https://soundcloud.com/applesforeveryone Spark London: http://stories.co.uk/ Get Carter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Carter Eric: https://soundcloud.com/gettingbetteracquainted/sets/the-eric-episodes The Tweet: Fully Automated Luxury Communism: http://novaramedia.com/2015/06/19/fully-automated-luxury-communism/ Universal Basic Income: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_income Pitman Painters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashington_Group Lee Hall (is the name we were looking for): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Hall_(playwright) Patrick Russell's book: https://he.palgrave.com/page/detail/shadows-of-progress-james-taylor/?sf1=barcode&st1=9781844573226 Dads Films/Interviews on dvd: http://shop.bfi.org.uk/shadows-of-progress-dvd-bluray.html http://shop.bfi.org.uk/the-national-coal-board-collection-volume-one-dvd-bluray.html Antony Gormley: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antony_Gormley Billy Elliot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Elliot Pride: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_(2014_film) The Spirit of 45: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_of_%2745 The iPhone related mineral is Coltan (not Colbalt): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coltan The Restart Project: http://therestartproject.org/ Theresa May: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theresa_May 5 Steps to Tyranny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hteidPuaIdM Hassan Akkad @ Spark: https://www.acast.com/sparklondon/escape-arefuaidspecial-truestorieslive Obama: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama Orgreave: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Orgreave Hillsborough: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster Help more people get better acquainted.
