How to Create WordPress Child Theme Step by Step | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:02:54

Before learning how to create a child theme, it is important for you to know what a child theme is and why it is important. A child theme is a separate theme that is dependent on a parent theme to function. A child theme gets all the code from the parent theme. It is thus a child of the parent theme. Customizing a theme makes it hard for you to update it to the newest version without losing the changes you made. If you are making any changes to your current theme you need a child theme. A child theme makes it possible for you to update your parent theme without losing your changes and lets you use all themes functionalities in the child.Creating a Child ThemeNow that you know what a child theme is and when it is used, let’s learn how to create a child theme. To get started with it, you need to have some HTML, CSS skills, and PHP basic skills. You also need to have the logins to the theme file from the hosting Cpanel or the FTP. If you have an option to download the theme, you can create a child theme on your local host.In the web host environment, you can use an FTP account from software such as Filezilla to make it easier for you to edit and add files to your server. For this tutorial, we will be creating a child theme in the localhost demo site we created in the tutorial - installing WordPress on localhost.Step 1: Create a Child Theme’s FolderCreating a child theme’s folder is the first step. Login to your website using your FTP client and go to “wp-content/themes/”. Inside the theme folder, you will see folders with the themes installed on your website. Create a folder and give it your preferred name. It is important to give the folder a descriptive name that will help you know that it is the folder for the child theme. I created Evolve theme child theme folder inside my WordPress localhost installation as shown in the image above.Step 2: Create Child Theme’s style.css FileAfter creating the child theme’s folder, you now need to create the child theme’s style.css file. The style.css file is important since it works as a supplement of a kind to your parent theme’s style.css file. To create the style.css file, open a text editor and type or paste the following:/*Theme Name: Evolve Child ThemeTheme URI: http://www.theme4press.com/themes/evolveDescription: Evolve Child ThemeAuthor: Theme4Press ThemesAuthor URI: http://www.njengah.comTemplate: EvolveVersion: 1.0.0*/Note: The information above is specific for this tutorial and can be altered to match your theme name, URL, and description. You need to change the “Template” variables so as to make your child theme valid. To elaborate with an example; if you have installed the “Twenty Sixteen”...   What is a Permalink? WordPress Beginner’s Tutorial | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:02:41

Permalink isn’t a commonly used term, except for in the world of WordPress. The WordPress CMS uses the term “permalink” throughout the dashboard, and understanding its meaning is important for using the platform. The meaning and purpose of the term are simple. What is a permalink?Permalink means “permanent link,” and it’s essentially the URL of a page. A better name may have been “permaURL.”For example, this page’s permalink is:competethemes.com/blog/what-is-permalink/The “perma” part of the word is reinforcing the idea that URLs shouldn’t change. Once you publish a post/page, you should leave the permalink the same. That said, it is entirely possible to change a page’s URL if you need to.There are two places in the WordPress dashboard where you can edit your permalinks. How to edit your permalink structureThe permalink structure is the base for all of your site’s URLs or permalinks.Every new WordPress site uses the Plain setting by default. There are two problems with this structure. First, the URLs are not human-readable. They use the ID of the post/page, and that’s it. If you share a link to one of your posts on social media or in an email, nobody seeing it will know what the page is about.Second, you can’t customize the permalink of any post/page when you use the default setting. The best option is to switch to the Post Name permalink structure. This structure uses the title of the post for the URL, which gives people a lot more insight into what the post is about based only on the link.Even better, this permalink structure also allows you to edit the URL of any post/page, so you can modify the permalinks exactly how you want.If you have an established website already, you’ll want to be prepared to redirect your posts before you make a change to your permalink structure. For a new site without many posts or backlinks, you can make this change right away. Now that you’ve got the best permalink structure activated, let’s talk about updating individual permalinks. How to edit a page’s permalinkYou can edit any post or page permalink via the editor.Make sure you already saved the post and set a category, and then you will see the Permalink section in the right sidebar. The part of the URL you can edit is called the “URL slug.” These are the characters appended to the domain. While you should avoid changing the permalink of an existing page, you should always edit your permalinks before publishing a post/page.Tips for editing permalinksBy default, WordPress will take the post title and use that for the slug. It’s converted to lowercase, special characters are removed, and spaces are replaced with hyphens. For example, WordPress would auto-generate...   Dynamically Overwrite WordPress Permalinks with Filters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:03:20

Reading Time: 4 minutesIf you’re looking to overwrite the permalink for a post or page, WordPress provides you with a few functions to filter the permalink. post_link, page_link, and post_type_link. These filters let you completely overwrite the URL or add query parameters to the end.But why? What led me down this path was the need to give a client a news post type that could sometimes link through to a detail page, but other times link directly to a third party.Throw in a custom field for an external URL and a few filters later we’re all good. A more common use case may be adding a parameter to the end of a URL to do some basic tracking. You could probably even get fancy and do some basic A/B testing.Neat! How do I do It?Let’s say we have a post type being created for sharing news stories. Some will link internally for more details, others will link externally directly to the source. We’ll need to do a couple things. First, we need to give the user a meta field for entering the custom URL. I’d suggest using Advanced Custom Fields to take advantage of their URL specific field, but you can create a custom field yourself as well.If you’d like to create your own check out this guide on adding your own custom metabox.Let’s say we have a meta field called custom_link that can be set on the News post type and when that is set we want the the_permalink function to output the value of custom_link.We need to filter the permalink on the news post type using the post_type_link filter.function prefix_filter_news_permalink( $url, $post ) { // If the custom_link ACF field is set get it's value $custom_link = get_field( 'custom_link', $post->ID ); // If the custom_link is set and the post type is news change the URL to the custom_link value if ( $custom_link && 'news' === get_post_type( $post->ID ) ) { $url = $custom_link; } // Return the value of the URL return $url;}add_filter( 'post_type_link', 'prefix_filter_news_permalink', 10, 2 );Let’s break that code down.First, we’re creating a function named prefix_filter_news_permalink that gets 2 parameters from the post_type_link filter. The $url which is the original permalink and $post which is the post object. The function first sets $custom_link to the value of the custom_link ACF field. Then we do an if statement to check if the post type has the news slug. If both of those conditions are true then we override the $url parameter to be the custom_link set for the post. Then we return the $url everytime the function is called. Since we always want a link returned. The last line add_filter( 'post_type_link', 'prefix_filter_news_permalink', 10, 2 ); adds our function to the post_type_link filter...
