Madhushala and Bachchan - Hindi Stories, Poetry, History

Circa 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams. Such as – धर्मग्रन्थ सब जला चुकी है जिसके अन्तर की ज्वाला, कर सकती है आज उसी का स्वागत मेरी मधुशाला! Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation - ध्यान किए जा मन में सुमधुर सुखकर, सुन्दर साक़ी का, और चलाचल, पथिक, न तुझको दूर लगेगी मधुशाला! Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance – आँख चार हों जिसकी मेरे साकी से दीवाना हो, पागल बनकर नाचे वह जो आए मेरी मधुशाला... In 1954, when Bachchan ji landed in Mumbai after sailing for 18 days on his return journey from London, there was a Kavi Goshthi organized in his honour. There was a poem written to introduce Mr. Bachchan! December 1933 - the very first public recitation of Madhushala, at Shivaji Hall – Kashi University and the magical effect it had on the audience. First day was common for several poets but by the end of the day, Madhushala became such a rage that everybody wanted a day dedicated only to Bachchan and his Madhushala – the poem had a mesmerizing effect on her audience. The chairperson of the event – Manoranjan Prasad ji even wrote several parodies, which were recited during the breaks. Circa 1934 – Madhushala was heavily criticized in its initial days thanks to its general perception as an ode to liquor. Ramvriksha Verma ‘Benipuri’ of Yogi weekly magazine even threatened to shoot him if Bachchan ever came to Patna. Circa 1938 – Bachchan Ji was in Indore for a Kavi Sammelan, where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the guest of honor. Somebody complained to Gandhi that Madhushala is a drunkard's poetry. Bachchan was terrified when Gandhi summoned him. Gandhi asked him to recite some of his poems, Bachchan smartly picked up two verses. Year 1935 – it was quite a struggle to publish Madhushala for the first time. Abhyuday Press where Bachchan Ji used to work, was dilly dallying for a year, so Bachchan had to take the matter in his own hands – using all possible resources at his disposal and with friends, he founded a press called “Sushma Nikunj”, which became the first publisher of Madhushala, and subsequently of Madhubala and Madhukalash.Then we talk about the symbols used here, such as, skies, earth, stars and an interdependent eco-system, the Yin-Yang kind of relationship via Madhushala.झड़ी लगाकर बरसे मदिरा रिमझिम, रिमझिम, रिमझिम कर, बेलि, विटप, तृण बन मैं पीऊँ, वर्षा ऋतु हो मधुशालाWe are also talking about Bachchan ji reliving his past when he sees his dead friends Karkal and Champa into his new friends Shri Krishna and Rani. We start by talking about the movie “Midnight in Paris” and how its theme of Nostalgia is reflected in Madhushala’s verses.
