A replay of our episode from 11 May 2015 Gareth and Anthony are focused on brand new music this week, with nine of the ten tracks either new or unreleased. We have a track from the forthcoming Thee Oh Sees record as well as new ones from the Eccentronic Research Council, Ela Orleans, and Dean McPhee; brand new digidub from Asher Senator via German label Jahtari and Danish producers Maffi. We’ve also got a mind-melting live recording of the unimitable Islam Chipsy alongside a recording of The Wit and Wisd
A track from the long-awaited new Gold Panda record kicks us off this week, where we revisit a few podcast favourites who have new records on the way. It's not all old favourites though, we've got new music from podcast debutants, including LA pop from Nvdes, gnarly rock from Arabrot, afro-funk from The Jagger Batchway Group, and odd electronics from Eartheater. New records from Fumaça Preta, The Cosmic Dead, Jimi Tenor, Apostle, and Metropolitan Soul Museum add up to an exceptional hour of new music.
This week we have the exclusive first play of former Jaga Jazzist member Norwegian experimental guitarist Stian Westerhus’ new track. We’ve also got two from Japan with the insatiable techno-esque sounds of Japanese trio Nisennenmondai and the experimental work from Keiji Haino. Two too from Canada with Venetian Snares and Poirier. There’s Cameroonian disco from Pasteur Lappé, experimental Italian jazz from Piero Umiliani, and modern soul from Adrian Younge
Some exceptional swearing and even better techno and everything in between on this week’s show. We’ve got Hungarian experimentations from 12z, more experimentation from Fatima Al Qadiri, garage pop music from LA’s Feels, and a nice chunk of funk and disco. We’ve got the latest from PJ Harvey and close off with something rather rude from Scottish troubadour Aidan Moffat. After an electronics heavy podcast last week, you don’t get many more fantastic guitar acts than those that feature on this week’s Independent Music Podcast. From new tracks from San Francisco friends Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall, to Manchester’s ever magnificent Gnod and the immense sounds of Sheffield’s Blood Sport. We also have odd electronics from Basic Rhythm, techno from Route 8, Kora-gorgeousness from Stranded Horse, light-touch Finnish hip hop from Tomppabeats, heavier-touch hip hop from Golde
Some extraordinary electronic music on this week's show. JahYu's rootsy dub with throat singing and bird noises ticks all our boxes, we've got two future British masters in Commodo and Rocks FOE combining, and another one in Gaika. It's a real showcase of wonderful British electronics, with Not Waving, Champion, and Four Tet also appearing. Away from that we have the legendary Iggy Pop kicking things off, brilliant electronic pop with Montreal's She-Devils, Italian drone from Fulkanelli and Ethiopian elect
Polish dub from Dreadsquad kicks off a podcast crossing across the genres, with new music from Brooklyn's Prince Rama, Yorkshire's moog master Matthew Bourne, and Haiku No Ku. We've also got covers performed by Scotland's Supermoon and Kay Dennis, as well as a tribute to the late, great Clarence Reid AKA Blowfly.
The Japanese do noisey rock music better than most, and this week's show has ample proof with tracks from Melt-Banana and Piqnic. We've got reissued Greek Jaffa psych from Aris San, as well as new tracks from Future Punx, abstract sound artist Thomas Köner, and Salford-based electronics master Howes.
Your first podcast of 2016 features lots of interesting new releases. From the opening sounds of Markey Funk's heavily Italian library music influenced new faux-horror OST, past the South African hip hop of Luka Productions, sumptuous rhythms from London's Phall Fatale and sampling of Buddha Machine Loops from China and Tibet - this is the usual mix of the weird, the wonderful, and the truly outstanding sounds of independent music.
Our parting gift for 2015, an edited three hour version of our 2015 retrospectives. Featuring some of the best music from independent artists and record labels this year. Thank you for listening to the Independent Music Podcast in 2015, see you again in 2016.
The final part of our 2015 retrospective is somewhat slower. With stunning hushed Scottish tones, London poetry mixed with German digidub, LA hip hop, and a digital release that has a vinyl release earmarked for 2016. Thank you for all your support this year - see you in 2016!
The second part of our 2015 retrospective takes us into newer territory, with a brand new release from an Israeli dub MC making the cut. Alongside that we've got the best in afrobeat (even if it doesn't meet the Kuti threshold), grime, and South African begging for your ears from a year of outstanding independent releases.
The most wonderful time of the year! Gareth and Anthony dig through a fabulous year of music to bring you three episodes of great, perhaps forgotten music that has come out this year. Did you hear the one with the classically trained Egyptian pianist with two drummers? or the Hungarian afrobeat? or the Rastafarian who has a bad memory and speaks to two Danish producers about it? Well get stuck in to the first of our retrospectives.
Heavy hitting this week, we have brand new trap from new Croydon 'firespitter' Rocks FOE and an incredible new 7" from the Gaslamp Killer. There's lots of heavy sounds, with new ones from Melt Yourself Down, Goat (the Japanese one), Scotch Bonnet-signed Egoless, and the immense new single from Fumaca Preta. Stereolab-affiliated Cavern of Anti-Matter also have a new track, as do Dark Sky and experimental love-song enthusiasts The Grubby Mitts. Download from iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/podcast/indepe
