On July 2, 2003, Terry Horman answered the door to hear the news no parent ever wants to hear. Authorities informed Terry that her son Joshua Crawford was found deceased. Upon hearing the news, Terry collapsed. After Josh didn’t show up for work, concerned friends went to his first story Frederick, Maryland apartment. After knocking, no one answered. One of Joshua’s friends climbed in through a window. His apartment was ransacked and his video games, a guitar, jewelry, and other personal belongings were gone. Josh was found deceased. Someone had brutally murdered him. He had been bound with duct tape, beaten and stabbed to death. An autopsy later ruled Josh died of asphyxiation and blunt force injuries.Terry reached out to a private investigator named Sam Hannah, who is a retired police chief and homicide detective. This week’s unsolved homicide story is about the murder of a 20-year-old Houston woman named Shelbey Thornburgh. Shelbey eventually settled into a Houston apartment. She took a job as an escort. She told her family that it didn’t involve sexual relations with clients. However, Krystina had her doubts. She suspected her younger sister engaged in prostitution. She attempted to convince her younger sister to move to Alabama and give up prostitution. Shelbey told her sister that she couldn’t because she feared leaving her pimp. On November 4, 2015, Shelbey had arranged to meet with a client sometime in the evening. Hotel video surveillance showed the man enter and leave the apartment within 30 minutes. Kristina received an early morning phone call that her sister was deceased. She learned that someone had brutally murdered Shelbey. Her killer had slashed her throat and nearly decapitated her in the process.When Krystina visited her sister at the funeral home, she was horrified by what she saw. The funeral home had basically sewn Shelbey’s head onto the body. Seeing Shelbey’s body gave Krystina and indication of just how horrific her sister was murdered. This week’s story is about a Claysburg, Pennsylvania mother named Fawn Marie Mountain who vanished in 2012. Fawn and her girlfriend Heather spent the day in East Freedom, Pennsylvania helping Heather’s parents prepare their butcher shop for hunting season. Fawn, Heather, her brother Mike and his girlfriend, Stephanie cleaned the butcher shop and sanitized the tools. Before Fawn and Heather went home, they stopped at her brother Mike’s house. Fawn sat in the car with Mike’s girlfriend, Stephanie. Fawn said she was going to go home and watch some scary movies. Stephanie never saw Fawn again after that conversation. Fawn’s cousin Bridgette Gill told me that everyone loved her. She was a friendly and easygoing young woman, just trying to make her way in life. She said Fawn had a hard life. She had been physically and sexually abused in the past and had a daughter named Kayden who died. She was stillborn. Until 2009, Fawn had never engaged in a relationship with a woman until meeting Heather Dibert in an Altoona Pennsylvania nightclub called “The Island.” The two connected and started a relationship. Fawn ended up moving to Claysburg with Heather. Heather and Fawn had a volatile relationship. Fawn tried to leave many times, but would always end up returning to Heather. Unfortunately, no one reported Fawn missing until 2017, which was five years after she disappeared. I asked Bridgette if she thought Fawn was alive. She told me there was no way she was alive. Fawn didn’t drive or have a job. She relied on a social security check and had nowhere to go. Although the Pennsylvania State Police haven’t named any persons of interest, they believe there is foul play involved in Fawn’s disappearance. Heather was the last person to be seen with Fawn. On September 15, 2019, Alicia Navarro, 14, vanished from Glendale, Arizona. She was only days away from her birthday when she vanished. Alicia's mom, Jessica Nunez, says she woke up to find her daughter missing. She says Alicia left a note that said she ran away but that she would be back. Nunez said her daughter has autism and relies on medication. Additionally, Alicia has never been on her own and needs help from her family. The Glendale Arizona Police are investigating the disappearance. The family has also partnered with a non-profit group called The Anti-Predator Project.When she left home, Alicia took her cellphone and laptop, but neither have shown any activity since her disappearance. Although Alicia was autistic, her mother said she was a smart girl who was tech savvy. She only had a few friends, but she spent much time online playing games like any other teenager. It’s believed that someone reached out to her and began grooming her. And this is most likely the person who lured her away from her home in 2019. Alicia will be turning 17 in September. Her mother has spent every day trying to find new clues leading to Alicia’s whereabouts. Alicia’s case has made the national news and has been shared constantly on social media. However, the publicity hasn’t led the family or law enforcement any closer to bringing Alicia home. On October 8, 2019, Rosemary Rodriguez's family received a phone call from a concerned co-worker. Rosemary worked at a local Walmart and hadn’t shown up to work and missed her last two shifts. The family immediately became alarmed. Rosemary was a reliable person who would never just blow miss work. For this story I spoke to Rosemary’s lifelong friend Melinda Miller. According to Melinda, Rosemary, her mother and Rosemary’s boyfriend had dinner at a local restaurant. After taking her mother home, Rosemary and her boyfriend left. Rosemary hasn’t been seen again. The family immediately suspected her boyfriend had all the answers since he was the last person to see her. Unfortunately, he hasn’t cooperated with law enforcement or the family about Rosemary’s whereabouts. This week's episode is about the homicide of mother Nancy Jo Canode. On March 3, 1981 in St. John’s County, Florida, she made a frantic 911 call for help. Nancy begged the operator for help. She said it was an emergency. Her killer was moving in on her and she knew it. Nancy’s last words were “Oh God.”The call abruptly ended. Daughter Suzanne, 15, came home about 3 p.m. She called out to her mother and received no response. Suzanne climbed the stairs to her mother’s bedroom. She saw her mother’s feet lying on the master bedroom floor. Suzanne called the police, then ran to a neighbor. Authorities arrived to find a horrific scene. Nancy Jo Canode, 39, was found with a rope wrapped around her neck. She had been raped, bitten and stabbed with a knife and ice pick. The murder appeared personal and was done with much violence. The knife was left on her back. It’s been over 40 years since Nancy was brutally murdered. On May 29, 2011, after not being able to reach her parents, Beth Stephenson asked her husband to stop by and check on them. What he discovered, was horrific. The Stephensons, considered one of the most beloved and admired couples in Boone County, had been murdered. Here is a piece from the Cincinnati Enquirer about the case:May 29, 2011, the Stephensons were slain in brutal fashion – bludgeoned and stabbed – and then, whoever killed them staged a bizarre scene. Detective Coy Cox, who’s headed the Boone County Sheriff’s investigation since Day 1, told me he’s been “guarded and careful” about the details he’s released from the start. What he will say is that the bodies had been posed. Items inside the house had been moved around. “There wasn’t one room in that house that wasn’t staged,” Cox saidSo who and why would anyone kill an elderly couple who devoted their lives to helping others? Detective Cox informed me the killer or killers spent some time in the home after killing the couple. I found this unusual because most killers commit their crimes and then leave immediately. On May 29, 2005, a young man named Scott Moody was preparing to graduate from Riverside high school. Scott lived in Bellfontaine, Ohio with his mother Sheri and sister Stacy. However, on the day of graduation, authorities received a 911 call and arrived at Scott Moody’s home. What authorities would discover was horrific. They found the bodies of Scott Moody, his mother Sheri, and 14-year-old Paige Harshbarger and 19-year-old Megan Karus who were Scott’s friends. Authorities would also find the bodies of Scott’s maternal grandparents Gary and Sheryl Shafer. The Shafers lived in a separate residence near their grandchildren and daughter. Someone had also shot Scott’s sister Stacy. She would be the only survivor. In 2 hours, the Logan County Sheriff’s department ruled the case a murder suicide and that Scott had killed his family before killing himself with a .22 caliber rifle. But there was a problem. When Stacy recovered enough to speak, she was asked who shot her. She said that she was shot by a gray haired man wearing a blue shirt. The police would dismiss her statement and tell her Scott was the shooter. Although Stacy and several witnesses saw a middle aged gray haired man, the Logan Sheriff’s department has always dismissed this person as the shooter. For this episode, I spoke to attorney and author Rob St. Clair who wrote the book titled Saving Stacy. Rob represented Scott’s father and also got to know the family well. He has spent many hours researching this case, studying court documentation and the sheriff’s documentation about the case. On June 19, 2001, a 25-year-old man named Shelton Sanders was weeks away from his college graduation at the University of South Carolina. He also worked at the university’s medical school.On the night of June 19th, Shelton was planning on booking a hotel room for a friend’s bachelor party. But Shelton didn’t want to go alone. He wanted a friend to go with him. Another friend named Mark Richardson agreed to ride with Shelton. The two set out that evening to find a hotel room for their friend’s bachelor party. The plan was to pick out several rooms and then let the friends decide which room they wanted. However, no one seems to know what happened to Shelton on that evening. The next morning, Shelton’s mother Peggy received a call from his employer. He failed to show up for work and never made it home on June 20, 2001 as expected. His family immediately knew something was wrong. Mark always let his family know about his whereabouts. He would also never miss work. He had also borrowed his brother’s car, which was also missing. The family filed a missing persons report after the required 48 hour wait. The family contacted Mark Richardson who seemed aloof. He said Shelton brought him home and then left. Shelton’s family didn’t believe Richardson. Michael Gregory Walters was 15-years-old. His friends and family called him Mikey. He would be murdered in his Indianapolis home. He was fatally shot in the head on June 25, 2019 and would die the next day. Michael had his friends, loved music and had aspirations to one day become a successful musician. For unknown reasons, Michael didn’t expect to live a long life. He had told his mother he had concerns that his life might be in danger. But when pressed for answers, he didn’t give his mother any answers. On June 25, 2019, Michael and a friend who used to live in the neighborhood were playing a video game in Michael’s room. An unknown person would shoot into Michael’s room. Michael was shot in the head. He was rushed to the hospital, but didn’t survive. He died the next day on June 26, 2019. Witnesses saw 4 people near Michael’s house when he was killed. The family and law enforcement know several people know what happened to Michael, but no one is talking. This week’s story begins on August 31, 2018 when Larry Rushing came home to find his wife Lin deceased. She was found on the kitchen floor with a laceration to her neck and “defensive wounds” to her right hand and forearm. The murder weapon was found near his wife's bodyLin was a 75-year-old grandmother with no known enemies. Who would kill this beloved grandmother? The alleged killer identification would be surprising. Authorities arrested a 50-year-old man named Gary Shane Clinton, with first-degree murder. Clinton was Lin’s former son in law. Stacey had been divorced from Clinton for over a decade. Stacey told me that she believes Clinton killed her mother out of revenge. It seems Clinton wanted to hurt his ex-wife by murdering her mother. By why did he do this after so many years? Did he harbor this anger for all these years? As of this recording, Clinton hasn’t gone to trial yet, so he’s technically not guilty of the murder. However, The Abilene Police Department forensic unit has collected over 50 pieces of evidence, which was enough to charge Clinton with killing his former mother-in-law.Clinton was married to Stacey Magovern many years ago. She had no communication or any involvement with him since there divorce. She had moved on and started a new life. However, Clinton was no stranger to law enforcement. He has been arrested over 40 times. In 2019, I interviewed a gentleman named Grant Inman. He is a unique individual who spent a decade working in the death business with his father. He has seen homicide victims, suicide victims, people who have died in automobile accidents and those who have been fortunate enough to die of natural causes in their sleep. So who is Grant Inman? Well, he isn’t a fireman, a police officer or a paramedic. Grant experienced much death while working for his father at the family funeral home. He also hosts an excellent and unique podcast called My Funeral Home Stories. If you are fascinated by true crime or if you have ever wondered what it’s like to be around the deceased, then you need to listen to his podcast. I found the episodes addictive. I think most of us have a morbid curiosity with death. It’s one of life’s darkest mysteries. Kimberly Louiselle was last seen on March 20, 1982. After meeting with her boyfriend, he broke up with her. Unfortunately, Kimberly didn’t have a way home. Her boyfriend went to work and left her at his house. She would end up at a payphone trying to call a few friends for a ride home. When she didn’t come home on the 20th, her parents reported her missing the next day. Her body was found a little over three weeks later in a field that was within ten miles of her home. Kimberly was nude. Someone had beaten her, savagely raped her and then strangled her. It’s believed that her body had been dumped their within several days of being located. This meant is what likely that someone held her hostage for possibly the past three weeks. What’s even more disturbing is that there were two other young women who were also murdered around the same time as Kim. They were identified as Anna Marie Doroghazi and Christina Lynn Castiglione. All three homicides remain unsolved. It’s unknown if the killings are related. Law enforcement believes it possible a serial killer killed the young women. I spoke to Cindy Arthurs who discusses the death of her older sister Kimberly Louiselle and Detective Angela Hunt of the Michigan State Police. It’s been nearly 40 years since Kim was raped and murdered. She said there was DNA but was too disintegrated to use. However, she said there was DNA recovered from Christina Castiglione. Cindy said authorities haven’t matched the DNA to anyone. IF the murders of Christina and Kimberly are related, identifying Christina’s killer could lead to the person who killed Kimberly. For this week’s unsolved homicide, we have to go back to August 15, 2006 when a 17-year-old Colorado mother named Candace “aka Candi” Hiltz was brutally murdered at the home she shared with her mother Dolores. Candi was a young mother caring for her daughter Paige. She was close to her family and sister-in-law Heather Hiltz. For Candi, a series of events would lead to her homicide. Her story begins when an officer arrived at her home looking for her brother James Hiltz. The officer began questioning his mother Dolores Hiltz about James. The officer became angry and raised his voice at Dolores. Candi stepped in and told the officer to stop disrespecting her mother. The officer told her to be quiet or he would arrest her. Candi held out her arms and told the officer to arrest her. But if he did, she would report him to his superiors for taking money from a prominent drug dealer. Shortly after, Candi’s dog disappeared. Someone had lured the dog from the property, tied it to a tree, then killed it. Within a few weeks of the family dog being killed, intruders had unknowingly entered Candy’s home and waited for her. Candi was shot through the chest and in the head. The killers then wrapped her body in a blanket and left her body near her baby, who was in a basinet. Sometime later, a man purchased the remnants of a storage shed. When he entered it, he found the bloody blanket used to cover Candi’s body, an axe, rope, other items and a police uniform belonging to detective Robert Dodd. It was also learned that Detective Dodd had disposed of other police evidence at a local dump. The Hiltz family and the community wondered why this evidence secured in a police evidence room? This week’s story involves a young Indianapolis mother named Tatyana Sims. She was a 20 year old mother who was viciously murdered while at home with her daughter. It was around 3am on September 3, 2019 when The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 3300 block of Hovey Street in Indianapolis. Police entered a bullet ridden home and found Tatyana Sims and her young daughter suffering from gunshot wounds. Although Tatyana’s daughter survived, she died in the hospital. The police found over 40 shell casings at the home. Amanda Davis, who is Tatyana’s mother, told me that the baby slept on a couch that evening. And this is what saved her life. For this episode, I spoke to Amanda Davis, who is the mother of Tatyana Sims. She told me she has an idea of who killed her daughter and a possible motive. Before Tatyana died, she told her mom she had received a death threat from a man who terrified her. Amanda said her daughter knew this man was going to kill her. Amanda has said there are people who know what happened to her daughter. But they won’t speak to the police because they are terrified of reprisal. Do you know what happened to this young mother?
