In late November, Jackson EMC announced its most recent grant winners, with Gwinnett County Public Schools teachers going to the head of the class.It was announced that 15 Gwinnett County teachers from area middle schools had received $23,557 in Bright Ideas grants to finance innovative classroom projects not funded through general fund dollars.Educators from grades 6 through 8 are eligible for up to $2,000 in grant funds. www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com The Gwinnett County Board of Voters Registrations and Elections narrowly rejected a bid to challenge the registrations of 15,179 Gwinnett voters on Monday.The elections board voted 3-2 to reject the challenge presented by Georgia Republican Party state officer, and Gwinnett resident, BJ Van Gundy during a virtual meeting. The challenge would have affected voters who try to vote in the Jan. 5 runoff election.The board also voted 3-2 to dismiss a second challenge presented by David Clark after it appeared Clark was not responding to calls for him to present his challenge during the meeting, which was held via WebEx.The two Republican Party representatives on the board, Alice O'Lenick and Ben Satterfield, voted against both rejecting Van Gundy's challenge and dismissing Clark's challenge.Van Gundy said the voters whose registrations he was challenging appeared to have moved out of the county at least temporarily, with at least some of them filing forwarding address cards with the post office.He suggested Gwinnett teens who were attending college out of state could be asked to provide their college identification cards, in addition to their state-issued identification cards, to poll workers to verify they are students.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a low of about 29 degrees Tuesday night."The warming station will have capacity to give 20 individuals protection from the cold weather and will be available to single men, single women and families who may be in need," HomeFirst Gwinnett said in an announcement."Guests will receive access to food, beverages and snacks while at the station and be assessed for eligibility for further homeless services."

Restaurants, retail stores, hair and nail salons and fitness centers were targeted to receive the grants although other businesses, such as daycares and medical offices, that did not fall in those categories also received grants if they met criteria laid out by Peachtree Corners, city officials said.“We all depend on the many small businesses in our city,” Peachtree Corners Mayor Mike Mason said. “We are very pleased that the city has the opportunity to help our small business community. These grants will also certainly go a long way in helping our city’s long-term economic recovery.”The grants ranged in size from $1,000 to $50,000 and can be used to pay rent, payroll, utilities and inventory costs. www.GoodMorningGwinnett.com It’s becoming clearer who might receive the first coronavirus vaccines in Georgia, but county health departments are still working out the logistics of when the vaccines will arrive and how many can get it.Georgia is expected to receive about 400,000 doses once emergency use authorizations are granted to vaccines developed by pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Pfizer, said Dr. Audrey Arona, health director for the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale County Health Departments. Arona met virtually with Gwinnett legislators Tuesday night to update them about the pandemic.Health care workers, long-term care facility residents and at-risk seniors are expected to be the first in Georgia to receive vaccines, Arona said.
