Norse Mythology – The Death of Baldur | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The Death of Baldur is one of the most famous stories in Norse Mythology. Baldur was the most beloved of all the gods. The son of Odin, the Allfather, and Frigg the Queen of Asgard, Baldur was a handsome, gracious, and cheerful character who gladdened the hearts of all who were around him. The Death of Baldur is the story that tells of the ominous dreams he began to have about his death, and how Loki eventually killed the fairest of all the gods.  Norse Mythology – Creation, The Nine Worlds, & The Gods | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Norse Mythology was the religion of the Vikings and the Germanic people of the middle ages. It’s a collection of stories or myths centered around many complicated characters such as Thor, Odin, and Loki. These stories gave meaning to the Vikings' lives, and the gods played a large part in how they lived their lives. In this episode, we will discuss the story of how the nine worlds were created, as well as a brief introduction to some of the many Norse gods.  Lindisfarne Monastery – The Dawn of The Viking Age | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The Viking raid of Lindisfarne marked the dawn of a new age. An age when holy monasteries and coastal villages would be sacked, burned, and pillaged regularly. It is difficult to imagine the horror and shock felt by the Northumbrians, upon learning that the holiest place in western Europe had been totally desecrated.  Who Were The Vikings? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

It has been almost 1,000 years since the last Vikings built settlements and waged war against the Christian kingdoms of Europe. To many, the great legacy that the Vikings left behind has been all but forgotten. Don’t get me wrong, today the Vikings are more popular than ever. But despite their increasing popularity, the way in which the Vikings are often times portrayed is simply not historically accurate. We tend to think of the Vikings solely as warriors, but in reality, the Vikings were just as concerned with putting food on the table as they were with pillaging and raiding.  Introduction | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The Vikings were a truly legendary people. For nearly 300 years they ruled the waves of the Northern Seas and raided peaceful monasteries and towns along the coasts of England, Ireland, Scotland and France. As raiders, the Vikings had an infamous and beastly reputation. Pillaging, burning, and killing whatever lay in their path. They would stop at nothing to appease their desire for wealth and glory. But apart from being excellent at raiding, the Vikings also established a trading network that stretched from Finland to Newfoundland, successfully besieged the greatest, most heavily defended city in the world, discovered North America, and revolutionized the way that we build ships. Not to mention the vibrant myths and sagas they told that is still capable of inspiring us today! The history of Vikings is a rich one, and I hope you’ll join me in rediscovering it!
