EP 44: Ginger Alden (Elvis Month Part 3) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:49

Elvis and Ginger tells the story between Ginger Alden and Elvis Presley over the course of 9 months before his death. Ginger granted very little interviews over the years and has saved the intimate details of their relationship until this book. What was it like getting swept up into Elvis’ world? Listen in this week to find out as we finish off our 3 episode special based on this amazing book for Elvis Month! Elvis and Ginger met in 1976 when Elvis was looking for a girlfriend and requested to meet Miss Tennessee who happened to be Ginger’s sister! When a phone call came in from Graceland requesting Terry’s presence at Graceland, the girls were a little bit concerned about the late hour and asked if all 3 sisters could go. From that moment on the Alden’s lives would change for every and the next 9 months would be an absolute whirlwind. Ginger recounts Elvis’ sincere generosity, being loved by a difficult man whose goodness and giving spirit outweighed any faults as well as accounts of all the family, friends and staff who worked and stayed at Graceland. We clear up some misconceptions about Elvis’ life at this time (was he depressed?), what about those TV’s that he shot, the tantrums, the drugs? Ginger weighs in on what she saw and experienced and you might be surprised by what you learn (including the time Ginger’s FATHER met Elvis in the 50s, Elvis’ spirituality and alternative healing methods and hanging out with Roy Orbison!) This is a truly beautiful story of love between a young woman who was chosen by the King to be his next wife, unfortunately Ginger would never be able to re-do the home together like they planned or have his next child. Sadly, he passed on August 16th, 1977 and Ginger (NOT his manager, Joe) was the one to find him. Rate, review and subscribe to Muses and Stuff on iTunes.  EP 43: Priscilla Presley (Elvis Month Part 2) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:36

Today- August 16th- marks the 40th year of Elvis’ passing and we’re talking about the women he loved. This episode is 2 of 3 about the only woman who actually married The King- Priscilla Presley. When Priscilla’s friends tried to console her about having to move to Germany with her family in 1959 they said “At least you’ll be in the same Country as Elvis!”. Little did they know she’d soon be dating him!  A homesick, lonely Elvis Presley was instantly smitten when he met 14 year old Priscilla and began spending every moment he could with her while off duty. Their 6 months together flew by and before they knew it Elvis was headed back to the States. Priscilla was devastated but held onto the hope that they may still have a future together. Two years later she got the call she’d been dreaming of and was soon headed to Graceland.  Their love had some obstacles (Elvis’ wandering eye and Priscilla’s parents to name a few) but what Elvis wants Elvis gets! Soon Priscilla had moved in, completing her High School education in Memphis while Elvis was working on films (as well as his costars) in Hollywood.  It would be 7 years before the pair wed in 1967, finally consummating their love. The built up passion led to their only child, Lisa Marie, born one year later. But their relationship wasn’t the stuff of fairy tales. As Priscilla matured, she began to realize she’d been moulded by Elvis to be his “ideal wife”, denying the true woman within. “He taught me everything, how to dress, how to walk, how to apply makeup and wear my hair, how to behave, how to return love – his way. I was Elvis’ doll, his own living doll, to be fashioned as he pleased.” Realizing she was never going to get what she needed out of their marriage, Priscilla made the tough decision to finally break free.  The pair divorced in 1973 but remained close (they even held hands during the divorce proceeds) until his passing on August 16th 1977.  EP 42: Ann-Margret Olsson (Elvis Month Part 1) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:26

Welcome to our triple Elvis Presley special! This month your dolls Chanty & Lynx celebrate The King and the women he loved to honour the 40th anniversary of his death. There’s even a bonus episode for those who have yet to listen as Chanty recorded one all about the incredible Tura Satana last year! First on the bill is the fireball Ann-Margret. Originally from Sweden, Ann-Margret Olsson came to America at age 5 and almost immediately began training for a career onstage. Her love of music and dance led her from one talent show to another until she joined a band as a teen. It was on summer vacation from Northwestern when Ann-Margret’s life would change forever. Playing gigs around LA and Vegas, Ann-Margret’s undeniable talent was noticed and she was soon a part of comedy legend George Burns’ show. From there Ann-Margret went onto films, getting her breakthrough role as groupie teen Kim McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie – a musical parody based on Elvis being drafted in the Army. For her next film the studios paired her with their leading male talent as the time… none other than Elvis himself. From the moment Viva Las Vegas went into rehearsals it was clear these two shared more then just raw sex appeal. The pair found themselves connecting deeper than they ever dreamed and began an intimate affair that would lead to a life-long bond. As Ann-Margret states in her in her autobiography My Story, “I’ll never recover from Elvis’ death. He’s a part of me, of my happiness and my sorrow and that will never go away. I treasure the time we were together, and I feel lucky and fulfilled that we were able to sustain such a long loving and caring friendship. It’s rare to have such a friend as Elvis, rare to have such a soul mate.” Ann-Margret has had many high points in her life including 2 Oscar nominations, 4 Golden Globe wins, countless sold-out tours and one of the longest lasting marriages in Hollywood (To 77 Sunset Strip actor Roger Smith), but she has also experienced her share of lows. Lynx tells Chanty all about Ann-Margret’s shady business managers, an accident that almost cost her everything as well as her battles with alcohol and substance abuse. If you haven’t yet done so we highly recommend checking out Viva Las Vegas as well as early youtube videos of Ann-Margret performing, you’ll see right away why the press dubbed her “The Female Elvis”.  EP 40: Viv Albertine | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:17

This week we bring you the incredible story of Viv Albertine which begins with the birth of punk rock in England. As a fashion student at the Chelsea School of Art she began dating Mick Jones (who would shortly form his band The Clash) and made friends with Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood. When McLaren invited her out to see The Sex Pistols perform, Viv’s life would change forever. Dreaming of a music career since she was a child, she now saw in punk rock a bridge to her dream. Viv got a guitar and formed a band with her new best friend Sid Ritchie (you may know him as Sid Vicious) and began creating her own unique sound. When Sid left to join The Sex Pistols, Viv found her place in the kick ass all girl punk band The Slits. They would go on to record 2 albums and tour with punk icons such as The Buzzcocks, The Clash and Subway Sect. Viv’s relationship with Mick didn’t last (nor did her fling with New York Doll Johnny Thunders) but made rock n roll history when it ended up as material in songs like The Slits’ Ping-Pong Affair and The Clash’s classic Train in Vain. After The Slits broke up, Viv focused her talents on film directing many music videos for a new channel called MTV as well as working in tv with the BBC. She married and became a mother burying her musical side until Vincent Gallo came into her life. Their friendship was “like a secret door being opened again to a world I left a long time ago.” Their conversations reignited a spark in Viv and in 2009 she began performing again, this time as a solo artist. Viv recounts her punk rock journey in her incredible memoir Clothes, Music, Boys as well as her battle with cancer, her struggles trying to become a mother and her search for identity outside the roles of “wife” and “mother”. The punk spirit lives on in Viv. In 2016 she “defaced” a male-focused punk exhibit at the British Library, taking a pen and adding in all the incredible female musicians who were at the forefront of punk. She also has a song called Confessions of a MILF! You can find Viv on twitter @viv_albertine & Instagram @vivalbertine and we highly recommend picking up her memoirs.  EP 39: Jenny Boyd | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:14

This week’s episode is all about Jenny Boyd. You may recognize the Boyd name as a popular one in rock and roll history, as she’s sisters with Pattie Boyd (married to George Harrison and Eric Clapton) and Paula Boyd (who dated Eric before Pattie). She was also married to Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. They first met when they were 15 years old and had an on again off again relationship for 15 years. What you may not know about her is that she has a Ph.D. and is a psychologist and writer who has worked as a therapist and consultant for a treatment centre for emotional, mental and behavioural disorders. Jenny has lectured on Creativity and through getting her doctorate, interviewed famous musicians for her dissertation which would eventually become one of her books we discuss in this episode: Musicians in Tune: 75 Contemporary Musicians Discuss the Creative Process. Jenny interviews Roseanne Cash, Mick Fleetwood, Joni Mitchell, Michael McDonald, Julian Lennon, Stevie Nicks, Steve Winwood, Keith Richards and George Harrison (just to name 9 out of 75!) Not only do we discuss her book, but we use her sister, Pattie’s memoir: Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Me to tell you about their upbringing in Kenya and London, as well as Mick Fleetwood’s autobiography Play On: Now, Then and Fleetwood Mac to fill in the rest. About Jenny, Mick says: “I’d been obsessed with and was utterly in love with Jenny from the first moment I laid eyes on her. I’d see her coming home from school each afternoon as I sat having my breakfast in the window of one of my two favourite cafes in Notting Hill. She was an absolutely gorgeous young girl, the same age as me, but I couldn’t muster the courage to speak to her, let alone ask her out. I was besotted. Jenny and I have been through so much together, including raising our two beautiful daughters, Amelia and Lucy”.  EP 37: Jo Wood (It’s Only Rock and Roll- 30 Years Married to a Rolling Stone) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:10

This week episode is all about the magnificent Jo Wood! When Jo met Rolling Stone guitarist Ronnie Wood at a party in 1977 she thought he was ridiculous and snubbed him. For Ronnie however it “was love at first sight, the absolute”. He set out to find her, redeemed himself after their hilarious first encounter (You gotta listen to find out why!) and in no time at all the pair were absolutely smitten. It wasn’t long after that Ronnie and Jo began their life together in sunny LA. The Stones were about to tour their latest album “Some Girls” and Jo, pregnant with their first child tagged along, the first of many tours to come. “I positioned myself half hidden behind an amp and the adrenalin rush was better than the hit of any drug”. The pair would have 2 children, as well as each having a son from their previous spouses. On their 7 year anniversary Ronnie would pop the question and he and Jo were married in 1985. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Jo took on the role of Ronnie’s tour PA, making her the only Stones wife officially on the payroll. In the early 90’s Jo would be diagnosed with a perforated appendix. Her battle through this painful period led her to what has become her life’s passion, organic & sustainable living. Jo changed her entire lifestyle, began growing her own organic food and creating wonderful beauty products for herself and friends until one day turning it into a business. While Jo and Ronnie were passionately in love, Ronnie’s substance abuse and alcoholism would end up ruling their relationship. In 2008 sixty-one year old Ronnie met nineteen year old Katia Ivanova and began an affair. This was a devastating time for Jo, but she turned her pain into progress and began learning how to be on her own. “Now when I look back, the divorce is the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me the woman I am today. Im closer to my kids and I know I’m a better person. I’ve grown up, I’ve become independent, I can look after myself now.” As for her and Ronnie, the pair remain close and spend plenty of time together with their kids and 10 grandchildren! In 2013 Jo published her fabulous memoirs, “It’s Only Rock n Roll: Thirty Years Married to a Rolling Stone”. The book is filled with fun, often crazy and always fascinating stories from her wild life as well as magnificent descriptions of tour life, something she obviously loved dearly.  EP 36: Deborah Curtis (Love Will Tear Us Apart) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:52

“This book also tells us something that is ever present but rarely discussed. The role of women in the male often macho world of rock. Deborah Curtis is the woman who supported her husband but got left behind”.  -John Savage Today we discuss the book written by Deborah Curtis, widow to Ian Curtis of Joy Division. In an interview with Cameron Crowe for his Rolling Stone cover, Harry Styles talks about the “tortured artist”. He says, “That’s why it’s fascinating when people go dark- when Van Gogh cuts off his ear. You romanticize those people, sometimes out of proportion”. Like Ian romanticized Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and James Dean, so have many people idolized and idolize Ian Curtis. Debbie gives us an intimate look into their life and marriage, providing insight and experience into Ian’s enigmatic and tortured persona. In Debbie’s memoir of her time and marriage to Ian, she tells of his very early disinterest in living beyond his early 20s, hoping that he would some day mature out of it. She breaks down some mystery into the life and mind of this mediumistic artist and explains with sadness in sincerity about how he was not the only tormented soul in their relationship. From his inexplicable temper tantrums to his thoughtful sincerity and his relationship with the “Belgian Boiler” Annik Honore, the Muses bring you another episode from the perspective of a woman who was there for it all. We talk about Ian’s obsession with David Bowie and Lou Reed and how Ian’s life played into his art which played into his life which played into his art. Since this episode does discuss mental illness and suicide, listener discretion is advised. You can listen to Muse and Stuff on our website www.musesandstuff.ptbopodcasters.ca or on iTunes!  The Dirty Nil | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:44

The Dirty Nil is the kind of band that makes you remember why being a Groupie is the best thing in the world. In a time where there is seemingly barbed wire on backstage doors and where the political climate is heavy and thick with sadness and frustration, it’s refreshing to spend time with a band that makes you temporarily forget wtf is happening in 2017 and make you feel present and happy to be exactly where you are right now. Chanty met Luke, Kyle and Ross of The Dirty Nil before their soundcheck at Lee’s Palace on Friday June 16th to chat about they’ve been up to for the past 5 years since the last time they all spoke. They discuss: How to stay healthy and take care of yourself when you’re touring constantly Choosing their favourite tour spots based on backstage food catering How every night has the potential to be Friday night Luke and Ross’ hot tips about getting to the gym for free Weird and cute fans gifts + time sharing a Casper mattress People getting up on stage to interrupt your set to ask innocuous questions Groupie Trivia Questions about Tura Satana, Elvira, Pamela Des Barres, Anita Pallenberg and Lori Lightning (to name a few!) Thank you to Luke, Kyle, Ross, Mike and Adam for a wonderful time. The Flatliners and Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs put on a fantastic, 2 night sold out show. Congrats on finishing up your tour! Your entire crew is cordially invited over for lunch next time you’re in town and we’re looking forward to the follow up interview!!!  EP 35: Sandra Dee | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:28

This week Chanty and Lynx step back in time to give you the story behind dream lovers Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee. Joined by modern day crooner and friend Alex Bird, Lynx and Alex tell Chanty not only Sandra’s life story but Bobby’s as well. Both Sandra and Bobby’s childhood experiences with illness and abuse would forever shape both of their careers and their relationship with one another. Meeting on set in Italy in 1960 it was (almost) love at first sight for Bobby and Sandra. By the end of the shoot the pair were engaged and would marry within 3 months of meeting. Within the year, Sandra would be pregnant with their son Dodd. While they truly loved each other, they both were struggling with issues stemming back from childhood. Having given a life expectancy he’d already passed, Bobby was determined to become a legend before it was too late, pouring all of his energy into his career in both music and film. Sandra was more self destructive, having experienced sexual abuse since the age of 5 and being raised by an overbearing mother with strange ideas involving mealtimes; Sandra would rebel by limiting her food intake and self medicating with alcohol. While their personal issues would lead to their eventual divorce, they would remain very close until Bobby’s death at the age of 37 in 1973. Bobby’s death would hit Sandra hard and she would never again be with another man. It wasn’t until the early 1090’s that Sandra would publicly discuss the traumas of her childhood and face her alcoholism and anorexia. In 1993 their son, along with Sandra’s help wrote ‘Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin & Sandra Dee’. Sandra received an outpouring of love and would spend her remaining years close with her son and 2 grandchildren. Nowadays it’s rare to find a performer like Darin who can do it all which is one of the reasons our friend Alex Bird is so special. Like Darin, he’s a man of many talents. We want to thank Alex for joining us and for all of his insight. Please check out Alex’s work on his website: http://alexbird.net/ Youtube channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/AlexBirdOfficial/videos Instagram @alexbird007 If you’d like to hear more about Alex, you can hear him on our friend, Alex Ross’s show ‘Ross Never Sleeps’ found here: http://neversleepsnetwork.com/series/ross-never-sleeps/ You can find your dolls on their website www.musesandstuff.ptbopodcasters.ca on Instagram and Facebook @musesandstuffpodcast in iTunes and on Twitter @ChantyandLynx This episode is brought to you by Electrified Porcupine. www.electrifiedporcupine.com

 EP 34: Denise Donlon | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:22

Denise Donlon began her career in music as a Much Music VJ in 1985 and by 1992 was named director of Music Programming before becoming VP and General manager in 1997. In the year 2000 Denise became the first female President of Sony Music Canada and remained there for 4 years. From 2008-2011 Denise was the Executive Director of CBC English Radio. She has devoted herself to numerous charitable initiatives, working with organizations such as WarChild Canada, MusicCounts, and the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership. She is a Feminist, a Humanist and a bad ass Social Activist. Denise also knows first hand that David Bowie always smelled like he had just gotten out of the shower. She has worked with and befriended many Canadian music LEGENDS such as Murray McLauchlan (who also happens to be her husband!), Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. We had the privilege of sitting down with Denise Freakin’ Donlon at our Muses Headquarters where we got to pick that beautiful brain of hers. We ask such questions as: Is there a fine line between a Foolish and a Fearless Question? Why is it important to mix music and World Issues? and Which musicians today embody the Music + Meaning = Magic formula? Chanty comes out of yet another closet, the girls are so enthralled by Denise that they forget to take a picture and the girls bliss out about how they were brought by Denise to Jazz/Peace Heaven. Other amazing Canadian bands discussed this episode are The Jerry Cans, A Tribe Called Red, Tanya Tagaq and Les Haybabies. You can find Denise’ incredible memoir: Fearless as Possible (Under the Circumstances) wherever books are sold!  EP 32: Chris O’Dell | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:55

Chris O’Dell was one of the first employees at Apple Records. She was an assistant to Peter Asher, working her way in to the lives, careers and hearts of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Leon Russell and Bob Dylan. Chris was a friend, a confidante to many a musician and their wives. She is the woman on the back cover of the Rolling Stones’ album Exile on Main Street, she typed all the lyrics to the songs on George Harrison‘s All Things Must Pass and she stood as a bridesmaid for Pattie Boyd when she married Eric Clapton. Chris’ life and her stories are incredible. We read her book: Miss O’Dell: My Hard Days and Long Nights with the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and they Women They Loved. We tell you about the time she lived at Friar Park with George and Pattie, witnessing the love triangle between them and Eric Clapton. She even became involved in her own Beatles love triangle- tune in to find out which Beatle and wife that was! We talk about how they preferred affairs to be “kept in the family”, and how that often in Rock and Roll, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. We are left with a few questions to ask Chris, so we may  just look her up and ask for ourselves. Oh won’t you call meeeeeee, Miss O’Dell? You can find Chanty and Lynx on Instagram and Facebook @musesandstuffpodcast and on Twitter @ChantyandLynx

 EP 31: Backstreet Boys (Chanty’s Groupie Origins) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:26

This week’s episode goes waaaaay back. Back to Backstreet’s Back, alright?! Chanty brings in her friend Henni to discuss the similarities and differences between their obsession and infatuation with the Backstreet Boys. Henni is originally from Finland and is now living in London, England. She is part of a poetry brothel, plays the violin and wrote the theme song for Muses and Stuff! The girls talk about Max Martin’s gigantic involvement with BSB, why “I want it that way” makes no sense (and why they wanted it that way), reminisce about praying to God about a potential future BSB meeting, and the delight we felt when we discovered what happened when you put the Backstreet’s Back CD into your computer… We talk about why we love the people over at WebFest and what you can expect between May 25th and 27th. Buy your tickets for the Fest if you’re interested in being a part of the online creator community next year or to just come out and see what everyone is up to and join the party!
