Producer/Host: Kathleen March Transcript: This is Kathleen March with WERU’s US-El Salvador Report. This week’s topic is the recent activity of Chaparrastique volcano. The report has been prepared in collaboration with Radio Sumpul and US-El Salvador Sister Cities. Según Jorge Meléndez, director de Protección Civil, “Hay por lo menos 462 familias que sería deseable reubicar de manera permanente”. Son aproximadamente 2.500 personas que deben de ser movilizadas para su seguridad. Hasta el momento, más de 1.500 personas han sido desplazadas. Protección Civil continúa el aviso de alerta naranja en los departamentos de San Miguel y Usulután. Los 12 departamentos restantes están bajo alerta verde. Las autoridades de Medio Ambiente y de Protección Civil han organizado el desplazamiento de las comunidades situadas en un perímetro de tres kilómetros del cráter. El pasado martes un equipo de vulcanólogos investigó la actividad del Chaparrastique. Meléndez dijo que de momento no se espera una erupción, pero que no se descarta que haya una avalancha o flujo de lava. El nombre de este volcán significa tierra del calor o tierra calurosa del chaparro en el idioma lenca. En la época colonial también era conocido como San Miguel. Según la viceministra de Ciencia y Tecnología salvadoreña, cerca de 50 escuelas de la zona han sido afectadas por las emanaciones de gases y cenizas del volcán. Los informes iniciales de la salida de lava han sido desmentidas. La erupción del Chaparrastique empezó a las 10:30 de la mañana en forma de una columna de gases y cenizas, de 5 a 10 kilómetros de altura. No se conocen víctimas mortales, afortunadamente. Por la radio la viceministra de Medio Ambiente, Lina Polh, dijo que la última erupción había sido en la década de los años 70 y que en los últimos 300 años ha erupcionado unas 20 veces. Según ella, “Es un volcán muy activo”. Desde el volcán hasta el puente Cuscatlán se encuentran las zonas más afectadas por las cenizas: San Jorge, Chinameca, Jucuapa; en Usulután, Santiago de María y Berlín. Pueden llegar incluso hasta Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Los niños y los ancianos son más susceptibles de sufrir enfermedades respiratorias por causa de las cenizas. El Chaparrastique está a once kilómetros de San Miguel, en la cordillera de Chinameca; a 2,129 metros sobre el nivel del mar, es el tercero más alto en El Salvador. Su cráter mide 800 metros de diámetro. Todavía no se sabe si la ceniza afectará la producción del café porque no se puede subir al cráter a causa de los gases nocivos. “… está difícil porque no podemos entrar hasta allá, solo estamos monitoreando hasta donde se pueda llegar, ha caído alguna ceniza y los cafetales están en el mero volcán …”, explicó el funcionario de la administración presidencial de Mauricio Funes. El funcionario no cree que la ceniza y los gases hayan provocado grandes daños, aunque las hortalizas sembradas al aire libre sí podrán ser afectadas. Producer/Host: Amy Browne Part 3 of 4 Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison has called theTrans-Pacific Partnership (or TPP) trade agreement “the largest corporate power grab you never heard of.” And if you HAVE heard of it, and want more information about it, you would have to rely on sections of the agreement that have been leaked by Wikileaks. The agreement is being negotiated in such extreme secrecy that even legislators are relying on the leaked materials for information. If enacted, the TPP would cover at least 12 countries, with a combined gross domestic product totally 40% of the world’s economy, earning it the label “NAFTA on steroids”. The Maine Citizens Trade Policy Commission, held a public hearing in Belfast on December 12th. The committee’s co-chairs, Senator Troy Jackson and Representative Sharon Treat held the the meeting to learn about the potential impacts of the TPP on food safety, farming and the seafood industry. We’re going to cover that hearing in several parts here on the WERU News Report this week and next. You’ll hear the concerns expressed by farmers, lobster fishermen and other community members. You’ll also hear some very candid open frustration from state legislators serving on the committee, who have had to rely on wikileaks to learn specifics about what is proposed in the TPP, and the potential impacts on Maine. The CTPC was est’d by the legislature in 2004 to track trade agreements and their impacts on Maine, and make recommendations to the legislature. The members include legislators, reps from state agencies, and other interested parties.
