With Apple's stock performance becoming mainstream news, I thought back on my own history with the company. I had been a loyal Apple user since the late 80's and eventually went to work for the company in the early 2000's. While there, we launched the original iPhone and I bore firsthand witness to a key pivot for the company that would turn it into the $1 Trillion company it is today. Given the stock's pullback and the iPhone appearing to reach saturation, I wanted to recall, on a podcast, my history with the company and talk about some of the signs I saw as an employee as Apple grew from a magical turnaround story based on innovation into the corporate beast it is today. (Audio improves throughout podcast) Today, I spoke to Mark Spiegel about why he has 20% of his portfolio short Tesla and why he thinks there's a "100% chance" of eventual hyperinflation in the U.S. Mark B. Spiegel is the Managing Member & Portfolio Manager of Stanphyl Capital Partners and is a New York-based equity investor. Prior to founding Stanphyl in 2011, he spent six years as an investment banker (most recently as a Principal with Piper Jaffray & Co.) financing public companies. Prior to becoming an investment banker Mark spent a year working for a microcap Nasdaq tech company, and he began his career with 17 years in the commercial real estate industry where he experienced firsthand the opportunities and challenges faced by a wide array of client companies. Mark believes that all these experiences– banking public companies, working for a public company and securing real estate for a wide variety of companies– combine to provide the kind of “real world” experience that’s extremely useful for an investor. In today's latest installment of my critically acclaimed* "Our Bullshit Economy" series, I talk about Jerome Powell being neutered by President Trump and not having the balls to follow through on his neutral interest rate prognostications from just weeks ago.
