I highly suggest you go back download analysts and part 1 of this fascinating discussion. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. The movie kind of fades out in the ending it has a really key scene towards the end that's really painful for the writer whereas wife I don't think it might actually not be his wife it's his girlfriend dies and the captain the Stasi captain tries to stop it. But it's kind of like one of those. The whole thing where you get the taste of like there's nothing that's going to stop any of us. But they do have a scene where the Stazi captain he's been demoted and he's in a basement somewhere and the wall falls and his friend hears it on his radio and he's like oh yeah. The wall falls or something to that effect and he just walks off the job like what was it like. And those remember he says der maur is ofen is often which is like every time I hear that sentence it's just like so I think yeah anybody that grew up in Germany or like the wall is open it's just like those are just one of the most powerful sentences you can say in German like this is like ever like yeah anyway sorry. And I remember it as you know as a piece of history that as a 10 year old or whatever it was like you knew that this was something that was history when it was happening. I think that even if you were if you were something of the eye of an age where you knew that what was going on and honored that this was something that was really big that was happening. What was it like to be right there. What happened. The thing is like I was definitely too young to know exactly what was like fully understand that. But my dad was so excited and my dad is not a history buff. He's a traditional nerd like he's a software engineer. He doesn't care about kings and dates and all that. I got that from my mom but he was so excited. You know I come out of school and he's sitting there you know he's in the street with his weight and they're in his car and he's like honkies seems like Justin Travis you know get in and we jump in the car and we're still in our Fasching costumes are carnival. It was like late February so I actually that's why how I know it must have been February of 1990. It was like where you know we're I'm just up like he's like a clown. But I just the clothes that I happen to have was an American flag as a vest and like I had stars and stripes on the pants and stuff and it was kind of goofy looking like it was all too big and weird. But that ended up being like super perfect it was like our go enough to tear the wall down like you know Scobey some patriots nose. And he was just so excited that I picked up on that like it was just like what is happening. Something great is about to happen. And it was so exciting. It was just so exciting. You know you just when your parents are just like. We're going to Disneyland you don't even know ...

It's a German movie and it's German name as Das Leben Der Anderen and we are joined by Travis Dow. Travis is really the podcasting man of all seasons. He is the host of countless podcasts including but not limited to the history of Germany. The history of alchemy Bohemican can the history of Africa and the German language podcast Americana for Euch is how you might say no. That's right yeah. And did I catch all of them Travis. I think so. Who's counting. Yeah. Travis thank you so much for being on. I thought this movie is perfect for you. I really felt like even watching this movie I was like Travis is the perfect guy for this movie yeah. And this is a movie that gripped me like I. Yeah definitely. Very interesting movie and I grew up in Germany and lived in Prague. And this movie was kind of like you know I and I moved to Prague for the curiosity of like living on the other side you know the life of the others to see what that was like and how the city is changing and all that. And you know what are they doing now. Czech Republic a new country and this type of movie just feeds into my curiosity of you know how it was and I eat it up for sure. Yeah. This movie is was released in 2009 but it's set in the East Germany of the mid 1980s really at the tail end of the Cold War just a few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and as we usually do we're going to use this movie as a way to get into a deeper conversation about East Germany and the Eastern Bloc countries as well as how countries how these countries progressed after the fall of the Berlin Wall which was a critical element of this movie The Lives of the others. To some production details about the movie the director and writer was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It's a German language film but it is available with English subtitles. It got a really high. Rotten Tomatoes of 93 percent. And I met a critic of 89 percent which I think is the highest of any movie we've done so far. It was filmed throughout Berlin which we will talk quite a bit about it as a runtime of 137 minutes. It was the 2006 winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film and it won just a pile of German and European awards. On top of that the movie does have a very high powered German cast but most of these actors I don't think wouldn't be Redah readily recognizable for most American audiences or non German audiences. Oelrich Umuahia. Jeez these some of these names are going to stretch my rudiment after all. Well Mirah. Yeah he plays Captain Gerd Wiesler and he's a Stasi officer. He's kind of a disaffected and burdened by the work that he has to do for the Stasi and her was actually an East German and there was another actor Sebastian called. And he plays an actor and Gnome maker slash stage writer named Gerg dry man and he is actually of a famous German actor. Calk he might be rec...

Don't worry we'll be waiting for you be on the big screen. 00:00:12                           What was going on in Luther's mind when he nailed up those the 95 theses on that cathedral door did he. Now at that point that he was doing something really big or did he think that he was just sparking a debate. 00:00:31                           That's one of the big discussions about that event will probably never be fully resolved. It should be said that putting 95 putting theses up on the castle church door was how you organized a debate. And he was just asking to organize a debate. It's not like he was you know shoving this up the pope's nose or something like that. But and it's also questionable whether Luther did it himself. Some people have suggested he had an assistant go do it. That stuff doesn't really matter. He certainly knew that you know some of his points were contentious but he figured that it would be you know talked about discussed quietly amongst the professionals in Wittenberg. I think that said you see this a little bit in the 2003 movie. There is a character that was named I believe Lucas Cranach who was the court painter of Frederick the wise who was also one of the early success stories of printing. 00:01:38                           And you see him twice in the 2003 movie and the first time he goes and reads the the the 95 theses and he yanks him down and goes to his assistant. We've got to get this printed or something along those lines and then they're running off copies and everything. I think one thing to say is that the printing of Luther's material was extremely important. But I also think that it was a little bit more organized and that's where you can sort of go back and forth about whether he planned this to be a big thing. I don't know if he and Cranach got together and said definitely Let's get this printed and get it widely publicized. Off the top of my head I don't remember that but I did know that shortly thereafter Luther and Cranach were together in business running off copies of his speeches and his pamphlets in his broadsheets and distributing t...

I'm your host Steve and today I'm joined by Annie who is the writer of the blog five foot 2. Speaker 2:         Thank you so much for being on today and yeah thank you for having me. Yeah it's great. Can Speaker 1:         you tell us a little bit about your background and your biography and maybe some of your web sites and where we can find you. Speaker 2:         Well yeah. My my you all well is a falsehood to blog dot com and I'm a university student and I'm from Birmingham in England and I got my degrees in English and I'm going to do my Masters in film and write in and I'm pretty much very obsessed with Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare. Sins of other life. Drama English it's open and it's all been incredibly good for me at the moment. Speaker 1:         The picture of Dorian Gray is actually more from books than your and in our conversations beforehand you say that this is the type of book that you like to revisit. Speaker 2:         Yeah I make a habit of reading this book at least once every month. I have done for the past probably about 10 years which means on time. Speaker 1:         Wow that's incredible. Well we'll start off with a brief introduction of the movie. This movie Dorian Gray is based on the 1890 classic. The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. This is a story of a handsome youth who is able to somehow maintain his beautiful exterior for many years but his spirit or core becomes completely the opposite rotten and corrupted. The tagline of the movie is forever young forever cursed. Just briefly the production details of the movies. This is all courtesy of Wikipedia. In the Internet Movie Database it was released in September of 2009 and it was filmed in various locations around London and England. It really has an incredibly rich and detailed background. It's directed by Oliver Parker with a runtime of about 112 minutes and Ed only received 43 percent rotten tomatoes from and met a critic which I thought was kind of surprising and it had a box office of 22 million dollars. Speaker 1:         Let's talk a little bit about the cast. Before we dig into the context of this movie because it is when you're talking about a book and a movie and a really detailed historical context that the movie and the book break out it's this becomes a little bit more complicated and maybe a little bit more fun as well. Just overall What were your impressions of the casting decisions of this movie. Speaker 2:         I think part of my overall OK decisions. I mean Baso was incredibly well cros...
