Talking about Virtue in Bartlesville – Episode 48 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 Minutes

Talking about Virtue in Bartlesville – Episode 48 Play the podcast at the bottom of this page A special thanks to Fr. Michael Pratt from St. John before the Latin Gate for allowing us to do a live recording after a men’s conference last week. We talk about Catholic virtue and how it applies to the Catholic man’s life. Man Drink: White Horse Whisky Man Gear: Sharpening Stone Man Topic: Virtue White Horse delivers a smooth and distinctive taste, the result of an intriguing blend of crisp grain, clean malt and earthy peat. Drink it as the connoisseurs do…On the rocks or with a splash of soda or water. White Horse also enjoys the company of mixers such as Appletiser, ginger ale, lemonade and cola. Go ahead – experiment. White Horse is an extraordinary Scotch, not least of all because it is a blend of 40 whiskies drawn from a select range of malt and grain whiskies from across the Highlands, Lowlands and Islay. The result is an intriguing blend that resonates with undertones of the Islay malts at its heart – Caol Ila and Lagavulin to name but two – all characterised by the salt-laden sea spray that soaks the peat used the dry the malted barley. Sharpening stones, water stones or whetstones are used to grind and hone the edges of steel tools and implements. Examples of items that may be sharpened with a sharpening stone include scissors, scythes, knives, razors and tools such as chisels, hand scrapers and plane blades. Though it is sometimes mistaken as a reference to the water often used to lubricate such stones, the word “whetstone” is a compound word formed with the word “whet”, which means to sharpen a blade, not the word “wet”. The process of using a sharpening stone is called stoning. The word “virtue” is used as a synonym for goodness or sobriety or some likable personality trait, but the Church uses the term in a much more precise way. Virtues are special graces given by God to the soul for the accomplishment of particular objectives. They inhere in the soul and are subject to strengthening or weakening. The Church distinguishes between two general categories of virtues: theological and moral. Faith, hope, and charity are called theological virtues because they are the most important characteristics in a Christian’s life, as Paul explains in Romans 5:1-5 and 1 Corinthians 13:13. They pertain (exclusively, in the case of faith and hope, and primarily, in the case of charity) to one’s relationship with God. We talk about wearing Catholic t-shirts and the do’s and don’t’s of dating as a Catholic.   Hard cider is a fermented beverage produced from apples. Historically, the earliest record of the fermentation of apples can be traced back to the Romans in 55 BC when they reached Kent, England and noticed villagers drinking an alchoholic drink made from apples.. From the 13th to the 17th centuries in Europe drinking cider was safer than water with 1/4 of the peoples wages were actually paid in cider. Bible and Family – Mark Hart Episode 46 Play the podcast at the bottom of this page Mark Hart, aka The Bible Geek, joined us to talk about the benefits of reading the Bible with your family. Mark Hart serves as Executive Vice President for Life Teen International. A graduate from the University of Notre Dame, Mark is a best-selling and award-winning author (or co-author) of over a dozen books including his new book, Unleashing the Power of Scripture: A Guide for Catholics. Our man beverage was Duke. The Style of DUKE Bourbon was inspired by bottles from John Wayne’s personal whiskey collection, preserved for over 50 years and only recently discovered. Meticulously blended to reflect The Duke’s preferred whiskey flavor profile from tasting notes left behind during the time he was planning his own distillery. Distilled the old-fashioned way; hand crafted in small batches and aged in new hand built heavily charred American Oak barrels. A selection of 5 to 10 year old whiskeys are chosen barrel by barrel and blended by hand before the DUKE Bourbon reaches the bottle, and ultimately, you. Our man gear is a votive candle.  Ephesians 5 with Joe Heschmeyer – Episode 45 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 Minutes

Ephesians 5 with Joe Heschmeyer – Episode 45 Play the podcast at the bottom of this page Joe Heschmeyer runs the blog Shameless Popery, has been on Catholic Answers Live, writes for Word on Fire, ChurchPOP, Strange Notions, and many more! Tonight he talks with us all the way from Rome about the often misunderstood Ephesians Chapter 5. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. ” Just as Christ loved the Church. How did Christ love the Church? We discuss this in our episode. Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So [also] husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.w For this reason a man shall leave [his] father and [his] mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”x This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.y In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband.  – Ephesians 5: 24-33 We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page!  Justice with the Tulsa DA – The Catholic Man Show | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 Minutes

Justice with the Tulsa DA, Steve Kunzweiler – Episode 44 Play the podcast at the bottom of this page Lent has begun so we have our first non-alcoholic beverage, Mystic Monk Coffee. Talk about the tape measure as the man gear and have the Tulsa District Attorney, Steve Kunzweiler as a guest to talk about justice. We often think of justice in legal terms, as in the justice system or someone being a justice of the peace. But justice is not inherently a matter of laws and rules. Rather, our laws exist to serve justice (they should, anyway), and the justice system should serve to enforce just laws. Getting to the heart of the matter, then, what is justice? Turning to the Catechism once again, we find the following definition: Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the “virtue of religion.” Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. “You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” “Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page!  Sam Guzman, The Catholic Gentleman, Little Kids in Mass | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 Minutes

Sam Guzman, The Catholic Gentleman, Little Kids in Mass – Episode 42 Sam joins Adam and David as we sip on a homemade brew given to us by Ken Henderson and talk about having little kids in Mass. As parents to young children, Mass can sometimes be more of a physical workout than a spiritual workout. We discuss different ways we keep our kids in Mass. About Scotch Ale Wee Heavy’s: Many brewers, after having brewed a variety of beer styles, eventually seem to focus their efforts toward either the hoppy or the malty side. Perhaps they enjoy drinking one type of beer more than the other or perhaps it is because they are having more success brewing one style versus another. It also seems to be true with darker versus lighter beers. Perhaps their preference can be attributed to their water source, which can favor hoppy over malty or dark over light. Malty beers certainly tend to do a little bit better with softer water. Those that go toward the malty side eventually want to brew strong Scotch ale. It is kind of like the IPA of the malty world. Also known as wee heavy, it is a rich, malty beer. Do not confuse strong Scotch ale with the much lower alcohol Scottish strong ale. To avoid confusion, I think it is better to refer to strong Scotch ale as wee heavy. While wee heavy is related to the lower-alcohol Scottish ales, and could be considered a higher shilling version of them, wee heavy’s higher starting gravity results in a different beer. The man gear was shoe polish. (Get ready because David is going to make a 3 hour video on how to polish your shoes! Haha!   We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page!  Bon Temps Toul Temps with Karlo Broussard from Catholic Answers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 minutes

Bon Temps Toul Temps with Karlo Broussard – Episode 41 “Good time, all the time”, Adam and David have a great time talking with Karlo Broussard from Catholic Answers! Karlo gives us some insight on the 4 levels of manhood that he put together based of Fr. Robert Spitzer’s 4 levels of happiness. A little about Maker’s Mark 46: Maker’s Mark is aged for around six years, being bottled and marketed when the company’s tasters agree that it is ready. Maker’s Mark is one of the few distillers to rotate the barrels from the upper to the lower levels of the aging warehouses during the aging process to even out the differences in temperature during the process. The upper floors are exposed to the greatest temperature variations during the year, so rotating the barrels ensures that the bourbon in all the barrels have the same quality and taste. The man gear was brought to you by Karlo. He surprised us with the man gear. Lift heavy, pray hard! Here’s a little sample of Karlo’s work he talked about on the show: We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page! We are on the Lord’s team. The winning side.  Beauty – Episode 40 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48 Minutes

Beauty – Episode 40 An Aberfeldy 12 year was a perfect sipping whisky to enjoy while talking about beauty. Tastings notes for Aberfeldy 12 year old scotch: A fruity, clean and polished malt with a touch of honey and spice, Aberfeldy 12 Year Old is an excellent introduction to this Highland distillery. Aberfeldy’s main claim to fame is as the heart of the excellent Dewar’s blend but whiskies like this are putting it firmly in the spotlight. The man gear is something in your house that inspires you, that draws you God, that gives you joy. Adam mentioned his prie dieu is his man gear. David talks about his Jeremy Matick painting. Is yours a prayer corner? A book? A picture? What is yours? Post it on our Facebook page! Adam and Dave discuss the topic of beauty. What is beauty? How do you define it?  We asked Leah Darrow how she would define it and she told us: I would love for people to come to understand that beauty is NOT in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is objective because there is a Truth in beauty that exists – because God, the creator of the universe, IS beauty. True beauty made manifest in the world will lead to true holiness. Acts of virtue will always objectively be more beautiful than a great dress or a perfectly tailored suit.  – Leah Darrow We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page! Leisure – Episode 38 After finishing an interview with Darin Delozier, Radio Director for Catholic Answers, Adam and David discuss what is “Catholic leisure”, while sipping on Ardbeg Uigeadail. Ardbeg Uigeadail is a a fine drop of Ardbed bottled at cask strength. A marriage of Ardbeg from bourbon barrels and sherry butts which gives a sweet and smoky finish to this malt.  Leisure is a topic that at first may seem unwarranted, but after diving into the topic we realize, like many things, the word leisure has been perverted in today’s culture.  A great video on leisure from the Institute of Catholic Culture here.  Deemed the book on leisure, here. We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our Facebook page!
