Beautiful Informative Talk. The first thing I’d like to share with you is a principal of the Qur’an that Allah himself lays down in the Qur’an. And that is it’s in a small phrase and I won’t even give you the entire Ayah, Allah {3azzawajal} says {li-yaddabbaroo aayaatihee}, so that they may reflect deeply upon his Ayaat, so they may engage in the act of tadabbur. This is called tadabbur—deep reflection, thinking, pondering, trying to understand what is the meaning behind these words—literally “behind” because {tadabbur} comes from {dubr}, to be behind. So you know when you really wanna understand something, in English, they say know it backwards and forwards, inside and out? The closest thing to that in English. So we have a deep understanding of the Aayaat. And now what’s interesting about that phrase—one of the many things—is that when Allah {3azzawajal} gives us a statement and it’s broken up into many Aayaat: {Ar-Rahmaanu 3allama-lquraanu} is actually one sentence. It’s not two sentences, it’s one sentence, but it’s two aayaat. It’s two different Aayaat. So in light of that principle, what Allah is demanding from us {subhaanahu wa ta3aalaa}, first and foremost is each Aayah should be reflected on for its own merit first. As a sentence, as kalaam, as speech that is continuous, that’s its own right. But “Ar-Rahman” by itself is enough for you to reflect upon. That word in and of itself is something that deserves your attention. So even though that statement is so powerful {Ar-Rahmaanu 3allama-lquraan} that statement in and of itself is incredible. But Allah stopped at “Ar-Rahman”. He made that an ayah and then He gave us the Ayah {3allamal-quraan}. So what is it that we should reflect upon in the word Ar-Rahmaan? I’ll start with the most basic, the easiest thing. I think anybody here, people who know Arabic or don’t know Arabic, at least know this word because they say it everyday [in the Basmallah and Fatihah]. The word Ar-Rahmaan is something you hear all the time. And probably all of you, if not most of you, know the meaning of the word, or at least some idea of the meaning of the word—it has something to do with mercy, or Allah being Merciful. So the first thing that you and I are being asked to reflect and ponder upon is “How is Allah merciful to me? What does that mean? What is Allah doing for me right now that is a display of Allah’s mercy?” That’s the first thing. You have to now—every person for themselves has to just get lost in thought, “what are the things Allah has done for me that are acts of mercy by Him today, right now, this week, this year?” from the things that have happened to you personally, to the things that are going on with your children, the things that are happening to your parents; somebody’s parents got sick and Allah gave them {shifaa’}; somebody’s children were not doing so well and Allah made them better; somebody was in a position of fear; somebody lost their job; somebody’s enjoying their health, Subhanallah, and we have a roof over our heads, we have food on the table, we have drinks in the fridge; we have these things to thank Allah for, and these are all manifestations of Allah’s mercy. So if you were to try and make a list of things that you are grateful for, or that you think are a proof that Allah is merciful to you or to me, then that list would just keep going on and on and on, we’d be lost in thought forever. Subhanallah. Such a deep statement. But i’ll take it a step further now. And at a step further, Allah gave us two names of his mercy, the ones you recite all the time {Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem}. But in this ayah Allah chose this particular one, the word Ar-Rahmaan. The word Ar-Rahmaan is different from Ar-Raheem, and there’s a lot of commentary about that but I’ll just summarize it for you because I wanna make a lot of other, share a lot of other things with you In shaa’ Allah. One of those things is that the word Ar-Rahmaan doesn’t j...

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and contentment. And what is the worldly life except the chattels of deception. In this verse from Sura Hadeed, Allah summarizes the things that most human beings chase after. He says, You better know that the life of this world amounts to nothing more then play and amusment…’ Needs Everybody has needs and wants. But when children are born all that they require are needs. The need to be fed, the need for milk, the need to poop, the need to sleep, the need to be washed etc. First Phase: Play As they get bigger a want comes into play, so a child of nine months or a year really wants to play. A baby wants to be held, tickled; they don't just sit there and eat their food and go to sleep; they want to play hide and seek and other games. So the most important thing at that age or phase is play and more play. Leave kids on their own and they will play for the whole day the whole day and the night or until they drop. Second Phase: Entertainment After that another phase starts and that's the amusement or entertainment phase. The Arabic word for this is LAHW. These are things which are not forbidden but they have no positive benefit or outcome. They get your mind off other things like work. So now our children don't just want to play but they want entertainment they want to hear stories, they want to watch cartoons or TV shows. So that's another thing added to the arsenal or menu. The marketing men and software engineers have combined these two things; play and entertainment to come up with really captivating video games combining stories and skill and the biggest consumers of these games are children. A lot of children are spending more time playing computer games than they do learning. Even Muslim children are also buying games way above their level like Grand Theft. Third Phase: Zeenah After this phase a new obsession starts and that is described by Allah as zeenah or beautification. So now we are concerned with looks and with image. This usually starts at puberty or the teenage years so you become obsessed with how you look or how you appear to others. When you were nine or ten you didn't care about your looks; whether your shoes matched or how you got dressed or how anyone else dressed or whether your cousin was wearing better clothes then you. But now that you are thirteen you spend forty minutes in front of the mirror or in the bathroom fixing your hair making sure that each single hair is in its place. Your mum or dad maybe shouting or banging on the door but you are not going to get out until that hair is fixed. So you may be slapping your head again and again to fix that hair. And if it doesn't go down you down it with a gel or a spray. And if it doesn't go down you pluck it out. For boys they are worried about growing facial hair so they stand in front of the mirror and see whether one is coming out or not.On their way to the shops or masjid they stop and check themselves out in every cars reflection end its so entertaining especially when they don't know that there's someone in the car. So beauty becomes a desire at this stage. Now you are all concerned with the image of yourself of your house or your car. If your dad has a car like an FX or a Mehran or worse still a bike which he will take to the grave with him, so you ask him to drop you two blocks away from the school. You would rather walk then be seen in that thing because you are obsessed with fashion with clothes with lo...

Esselamu Aleykum Ve Rahmetullahi Ve Berekatuhu It was really long and painful introduction (laughter) I apologize, At the beginning of this talk I would like to give you an admonition; i did not have much sleep last night and this flight to over here from, I can’t remember where it is from.(laughter) I am little loopy right now, inshallah, if my talk doesn`t have much sense I apologise. I will try to be (…)as organized as I can be. The topic..and before I get to the topic i might as well rant, so the first rant i want to share with you is about MSAs. I love MSAs; I was part of the MSAs. I was inspired to do whatever I do in life, and career path i choose direction I picked my life to go, and as a result the friends, the teachers, the scholars the insightful ideas I received in the setting of the MSA . It is just a fantastic institution and I don’t think it should be undermined. You know, sometimes there are students, there are different kinds of students at the MSA , you`ve got a lot off variety, and you have students that are extremely serious and don’t think MSA is serious enough..then you have students that are totally different from the social experience that think it is to serious `Why are they always having khalakat .Why are they always having study- circles. Or whatever. They are just too uptight. So all these different people but the fact that they can actually survive this thing and live through it. People who graduate from school they reflect and miss those days from MSA . they think back and say:”Man, I had so many great friends and there were so much opportunity at that time,I wish I benefited from it even more, now I don’t have that opportunity because as a matter of fact I can tell you ,having graduated and moved out from MSA about half century ago, you know there is a social void after college . There was really cool brotherhood and sisterhood, that happens on campus, conferences like this one, there is really nice sense of belonging. And all of a sudden after you graduate and go the Berkley’s there is like sense of loneliness and its really hard to find sense of belonging after that immediately, and sometimes some masjid are able to do that ,sometimes masjid is not able to fill that space , because our masjid has not evolved to that extent yet. So, I do advise you to take full advantage of this experience and to not underestimate the value even the social interaction, even the hangouts and barbecues. I don’t even underestimate the value of that one. As a matter of fact , to me, I think back and I say probably the most life altering experiences in my MSA days are trips to the conference . I never attended any session. I don’t even know what are you people doing here . I attended the sessions to sleep. Like that guy over there (laughter). That was me,ok . it was just the conversations with brother just getting out of your goal, you are not in your normal scene anymore, you are getting out, get to talk and open up , travel with people , learn more about them ,get more annoyed by them than you have ever been before..this all just part of growing ..this when I made friendships even though we don’t live anywhere near each other those old friends but they are still really the people I consider my genuine friends, the ones I spend those kind of times with and I made dua that Allah gives you those kind of friends in your days in college insha'Allah. So let's talk about success .like I said I will do my best to organize my thoughts on this issue inshallah .the first thing I want to talk about is success is something every human being vies for. its not something only exclusive for Muslims , or Christians or Jews, it’s not even a religious thing. It’s something every human being generally has aspirations for , and actually there are some people who have psychological sort of problem when they are not motivated to do anything and that’s actually sort of disorder,
