The Comedy Cast with Cathal Shanagher | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:40

This week on The Comedy Cast, we have Irish stand-up comedian, Cathal Shanagher. We speak about comedy competitions, a bad gig in Dublin where he thought he gave the audience trauma and some guy cutting off a lady’s ponytail and other horror stories from working in a pub in Roscommon. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/The-Comedy-Cast-with-Cathal-Shanagher.mp3 Comedy Podcasts This week on The Comedy Cast, we have Irish stand-up comedian, Cathal Shanagher. We kick off the conversation about him being pretty new to the live circuit in Ireland, having mostly gigged around Galway where Cathal is studying to starting to do a few nights up in Dublin. I ask Cathal then a question about his style because I noticed that his delivery follows a troupe of journalism writing, just something I picked up on that I thought was interesting and I wanted to know was it on purpose or subconscious. We speak about what Cathal’s studying and how it was more of a way to get out of Roscommon than any great notions of a career in business. We speak then so about Roscommon, a place Cathal describes as a ‘place where hope goes to die’. Look, most of our listeners now are American and British, so a place like Roscommon won’t be well known to them at all. And even for me a lad from rural Wexford, I know very little about Roscommon other than it’s a place where the IRA used to bury victims and it’s up there up around Galway somewhere on the map so I wanted to know a little bit about the place. Cathal paints a pretty bleak picture though but he lightens the mood with some hilarious stories about his time working as a bartender there when growing up. We get back to stand-up comedy then and we speak about how long Cathal’s been at the it. We speak about how he started and instead of trying out an open mic night and trying that a few times he went headfirst into a comedy competition in Galway. Even the organiser was surprised, telling him he’d have been better off doing an open mic first. But Cathal went ahead anyway and that was it, he’d gotten the stand-up comedy bug. Funny Podcasts I ask him then about how his comedy has changed over the two years since starting. It’s pretty common among comedians that they soon realise from being on stage that the comedian they thought they were going to be is quite different from the one that will actually make people laugh on stage. We speak about that for a bit and Cathal describes one particularly funny story about his first time gigging in Dublin where things didn’t exactly go to plan. He says he thought some people were traumatised by the set. We chat then about where he’ll have to move if he wants to progress in comedy in Ireland, there’s so many Irish people that say you have to move to London to get famous in Ireland. There’s plenty of opportunity in Ireland for sure, but it does certainly seem to be the case that if you really want to make it in comedy then it looks like getting success in England is far more beneficial to you than getting well-known in Ireland. A subject we’ve not spoken about on The Comedy Cast in a while rears its head with Cathal and it’s the one of comedy competitions. I get Cathal’s opinion on the pros and cons of performing at comedy competitions. We speak about his comedic influences and we speak here for a bit about the greatness of Frankie Boyle, you can listen back to a podcast where myself and Seamus spoke about his great

Boner Episode, Roast Battles, Comedy Snobbery & Parenting Existentialism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:12

Welcome to a Boner, Bonus Comedy Cast episode. Spud Murphy and Seamus Kelly chat about Roast Battles, comedy snobbery, UFC and an existential parenting crisis. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Comedy-Casts-Boner-Bonus-Episode.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here Follow Seamus on Twitter: here We kick off the podcast speaking about just how friendly and sincere Americans are compared to us begrudging Irish. Being fake nice is better than being miserable, sometimes it’s perfectly fine to fake it, just ask every single woman ever. Comedy is where is start our first topic, well Roast Battles is the first topic. Recently headlines were made in New Zealand following the appearance of Rose Matafeo’s on the new Comedy Central television programme, Roast Battle. A New Zealand newspaper alleged racism on the part of her counterpart Naz Osmanoglu so we have a chat about the relatively new phenomenon of roast battles, especially here in Europe. We speak about what is and isn’t allowed to be joked about in these battles and why really they are the most perfect of situation comedies. The outrage nation is spoken about of course and sure you probably know fairly well by now but here at The Comedy Cast we’re firm believers that when you boil it down there are only two types of jokes; good and bad. It’s old news now but we have a wee chat about the recent UFC 229 event where Ireland’s Conor McGregor lost to Russia’s Khabib Nurmagomedov. We’re not huge fans of UFC or MMA in general but we speak about the effect McGregor has had on Ireland and on the sport. Funny Podcasts Snobbery in comedy is a massive topic and recently I came across a massive Reddit thread on snobbery among book readers and I’ve no problem admitting I’m a book snob. I look down on adults who read teenage fiction such as Harry Potter, Twilight, the Hunger Games etc. and the whole 50 Shades of Grey tripe too. But I know I shouldn’t and really it should be each to their own, but still, y’know, isn’t it just human nature to be snobbish about certain things? What are you snobby about? It could be football. Irish football suffers from this hugely, Irish football fans prefer watching the English Premier League over their local teams. To finish off we speak about an existential parenting crisis Spud is going through and whether he’s teaching his child to avoid people just because he does.  The Comedy Cast with Eric D’Alessandro | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:00

This week on The Comedy Cast we speak to American stand-up comedian, actor and filmmaker Eric D’Alessandro. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Comedy-Cast-with-Eric-D’Alessandro.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here We kick off the interview speaking about Eric’s musical talent though, pinned to his Twitter profile you’ll find a comedy rap song called Be Careful. So we speak about the difficulties of comedy in music, and especially when trying to do a comedic rap. But the genius of it is making it about an ex-partner, something we can all easily identify and laugh about. Now, Eric is first and foremost a filmmaker and actor and about three years ago he made, as in, he filmed, produced, edited, wrote and starred in a film called 5 Miles from the Spotlight. This was of huge interest to me, as most of you will know documentary making is the direction I’m going in and we spoke about what drove him to make the film and to take the initiative and take on the mammoth project of putting a feature film together on his own. You can watch the film here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3cQbZfofGU We rewind the clock a bit then and speak about Eric’s love for sketch comedy and we speak about how that lead to him getting into performing stand-up, both to get himself out there more and to learn more about the craft of comedy as a whole. Funny Podcasts We talk at length then about comedy in the age of social media. Eric’s got a huge following on Instagram in particular where his videos regularly get 1000s and 1000s of views and he speaks about how he went from posting photos and videos of everything and anything to just concentrating on the comedy that people liked. He speaks openly about how he battled for quite a long time about whether he just give people what they want or should he push other things on them and it was fascinating to listen to him describe the decision making process. I ask him too about how he keeps his social media profile professional and in a world where it looks like followers want more of the person they’re following he actually does the opposite. Eric’s YouTube is full of videos and a kind of series he’s been doing since leaving New York for California is that he documents his ‘comedy journey’ on the comedy circuit there. We speak about the frustrations of performing at open mic nights where you don’t get a proper comedy crowd you just get comedians who want to joke about Battlestar Galactica and Thonos (I’ve no idea what the second one is) and who play for the open mic crowd rather than for proper comedy club crowds. As open mic nights become more and more popular in the comedy world it’s becoming a common complaint from stand-ups. Makes you wonder what it will lead to.  The Comedy Cast with Dwayne Strickland | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:16

Hello and welcome to The Comedy Cast, Dwayne Strickland is our stand-up comedy guest today. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Comedy-Cast-Dwayne-Strickland.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here Dwayne Strickland We kick off the internet speaking about Indiana where Dwanye finds himself living, he doesn’t seem to particularly like it of the comedy scene there and would prefer to be back in Chicago so we speak about why he feels that way. Dwayne gives us a couple of open mic horror stories from his early days performing in Indianapolis, one is a hilarious story about his grandfather having a few drinks too many, eyeballing a little person and listening to a stand-up ‘joke’ about how he got a STD after finding money on the street and spending it the only way you should, in a whorehouse. Next up, he shares another one about how he played in a bar that ending up being an old people’s home that was half a barbers as well and drugs deals were being done on bicycles outside, it was all kinds of wrong. We have a chat then about how America is a bit of a crazy place. Dwayne speaks about how the country as a whole simply does not like to take responsibility for anything it ever does and how America just continues to do stupid sh*t and is somehow both proud and ashamed of it at the same time. We speak about Dwayne’s first time on stage. He speaks about how he’d always wanted to do it but was scared. Scared of sweating too much and it took a dare from a girl in his work for him to get up on stage. In front of a room full of white people. It didn’t start well but when he got joking about his personal life he starting getting laughs and that’s when he knew that going with events from his daily life would be the best for his comedy career. Funny Podcast We get talking a little then about some of the weird dates he’s had, one girl did crosswords. Why? Why would anyone do crosswords on a date? People are strange. We speak then for a bit about Dwayne’s joke writing process and he reveals that he watches his sets back to really hone his sets and tries to constantly improve on them to make them funnier and funnier. We speak too about the trick of stand-up comedy, the confidence that you need to convince people that something is funny. Dwayne opens up on this and gives some good advice and how and why this works. We speak too about how some American comedians say they’re being held back by political correctness but surely there’s an argument to be made that it’s up to you to make people laugh and if you can’t do that then you’re doing comedy wrong. We speak then about the similarities between stand-up comedy and hip hop, especially starting out the artists have so much to say, but then, when the money comes people become comfortable and have less to say with the world and they struggle to remain relevant.  The Comedy Cast with Breda Larkin | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 33:33

Today on The Comedy Cast I speak to Irish stand-up comedians Breda Larkin. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/The-Comedy-Cast-Breda-Larkin.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here We speak about how and why she got into comedy while chasing a career in drama therapy, moving Virgin Mary statues and we don’t mean her moving one from one place to another, we mean statues of her that moved independently, although she does tell a story about losing her personal Mary statue in Brugge. Magic mushrooms come up, although I wished I’d asked Breda more about that and at the end we get serious and speak about allegations made in the comedy circuit around her part of Ireland. Hello and welcome along to The Comedy Cast. We’re on Episode 19 now of Series 3 and we’re hoping you’re liking the episodes as much as we like putting them together. As you may, or may not have noticed, we’re putting out occasional bonus, or boner, episodes from time to time and you can check out the latest one here where we speak about about doing glue in school, is Karl Pilkington playing the longest game in comedy, should we care that Bert and Ernie are or aren’t gay and what would you do to not join the army? On today’s episode of your favourite comedy podcast, we have Irish stand-up comedian Breda Larkin on to talk about all things comedy. Breda Larkin We kick off the internet with Breda telling me how she got on at the recent Electric Picnic festival, Ireland’s best festival hands down, we speak about how her gig went at the festival and she tells us about some of the comedians she enjoyed watching and running into at the festival. We speak about how and why Breda got into comedy and we start off with a question I wanted to ask her about an old video on her YouTube channel called Laughter She Wrote, it turns out it was an old college video based on a sketch show Breda and a college mate used to do, so I was interested to know more about it. We speak about why she went to do a drama course, well an improv and script writing course and it turns out she originally did it for a very different reason other than getting into comedy and acting. We speak about how after starting the course Breda found that she loved being on the stage and being the clown and instead of going down the road she originally wanted to she found that she wanted to get into stand-up comedy. We have a chat then about an appearance Breda made on RTE, Irish, television. Breda had attended college in Co. Cork not far from a place well-known in Ireland called Ballinspittle. Why is it well known? Well, back in the 1980s it was a place where a statue of the Virgin Mary is said to have moved. Breda’s second solo show was all about this, a hilarious take on the phenomenon of the moving statues. RTE got wind of how good Breda’s show was so they made a wee documentary about it. So we have a chat about how she found the experience of having her show, well, the topic of her show turned into a documentary. Funny Podcast When doing her tour of Ireland for the show she set herself a little challenge that she would make the beginning of every show in every town different and make it about the locality she was in. It was a great way to keep the show fresh and keep her interested in it too and to stay focused. It’s a great idea and something I wish more s

Boner Episode, Sniffing Glue, Is Karl an Idiot, Bert & Ernie and Army Dodging | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:56

We’ve back with a Boner episode of The Comedy Cast. Today on The Comedy Cast it’s Spud and Seamus and they have a chat about doing glue in school, is Karl Pilkington playing the longest game in comedy, should we care that Bert and Ernie are or aren’t gay and what would you do to not join the army? https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Sniffing-Glue-Is-Karl-an-Idiot-Bert-Ernie-and-Army-Dodging.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here Follow Seamus on Twitter: here We kick off the podcast speaking about glue, the reason being Spud had, just prior to recording, been gluing some things together and thanks to Poland’s impressive super glue he had glued over his finger prints and his fingers were sticking together. We fall down a tangent then of speaking about the cheap highs we used to get up to in secondary school. Karl Pilkington is launching a new television programme on Sky television this week so we have a chat about the man who’s become famous for being friends with a famous person, Ricky Gervais. We speak about if Karl is really an idiot, or is it all an act. We even had a look into his background but stopped. You’ll need to listen to find out why. Next up on the show we speak about the revelation, or was it, that Sesame Street’s Bert & Ernie weren’t gay, or aren’t gay. Does it really matter? Should we care whether children’s puppets are or aren’t gay. Haven’t we moved passed all this? Maybe not, maybe so. Everybody loves Sesame Street and yes, Bert is evil and we all know that but y’know, some people are gay and some people aren’t and it’s all good but as well, these are puppets. Sure we’ll always look for meaning where there isn’t any, that’s just human nature. Funny Podcast Our final topic for the day then relates to the story of what some South Koreans did to get out of military service and we speak about all the things we’d do to not join the army and why following authority is just the wrong way of going about things. That’s it for this boner episode of The Comedy Cast’s comedy podcast, we’ll be back very soon with more comedy interviews Get in Touch Don’t be shy, get in touch with The Comedy Cast or follow us on social media If you’d like to get in touch, email me here: spud(at)thecomedycast.com The Comedy Cast on Facebook: here The Comedy Cast on Twitter: here The Comedy Cast on YouTube: here The Comedy Cast on Instagram: here

Ronan Grace, Frankie Boyle & Tuesday at Six | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:37

This week on The Comedy Cast, we speak to Kerry comedian Ronan Grace, Frankie Boyle is our Legend of Comedy and our band guest is Tuesday at 6. Comedy Podcast https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Ronan-Grace-Frankie-Boyle-Tuesday-at-Six.mp3 Follow Spud on Twitter: here Follow Seamus on Twitter: here Ronan Grace is our stand-up guest and we speak about comedy in the age of social media. We speak too about his time with the Fact YouTube channel, how he became involved and the troupe of Albuquerque kids who still follow him on Twitter thanks to it. We speak too about him falling a bit out of love with comedy and how thankfully he’s back in love with what he’s best at and how he keeps motivated to become better. Social media is a weird thing and as someone who would be instantly recognisable to fans of the Facts videos I wanted to speak to him about people of our vintage, as he says himself, and how we don’t really get social media properly. We do get nerdy about comedy, Ronan has been at stand-up a lot longer than the Facts channel has been around so we speak about how and why he got into it, how it lead to him leaving college over his pursuit of a career in stand-up and how it all kind of lead to him falling out of love with stand-up. He took a long, hard look at himself then and came to the realisation, thankfully, that he still wanted to do stand-up so he’s got a new vigour for the craft and personally I’m delighted. Ronan’s a brilliant stand-up and I hope loads and loads more people get to see him all across the country over the coming years. Follow Ronan on Twitter here. Next up myself and Seamus Kelly speak about none other than Frankie Boyle. We’re both huge fans of one of Scotland’s most famous comedians so it was a delight to speak about one of our favourites on the podcast. Frankie Boyle Legend of Comedy Francis Martin Patrick Boyle was born on August 16 1972 to Irish Catholic parents in Pollockshaws, Glasgow. After leaving school he worked as a library assistant before going to college to study Urban Planning. He soon left the course and instead enrolled in a BA in English Literature at the university of Sussex. At 22, he had graduated college and began working at a mental health hospital but soon returned to Scotland and went to a teacher training college. He worked in a couple of school on placements but by then his career in stand-up was kicking off and he didn’t have to stay teaching long. In 2005 he got his big television break on the new BBC comedy panel show, Mock the Week, the first episode aired on June 5th, 2005 and Frankie Boyle was a regular guest on the show until he left in September 2009. Of course the show is hosted by Ireland’s Dara O’Brian who once described Frankie Boyle as ‘the dark heart of Mock the Week.” In a Facebook post when he quit the programme he said that the show did not cover enough major news stories, and was too restrictive on his risqué comedy act because the producers and the BBC Trust were afraid of “frightening the horses”. We can all certainly agree that the show went to shit when Boyle left. In 2008 while the whole Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross phone call thing was going on, Boyle came to the attention of of a Tory MP,

Boner Episode, Sex Podcast, Owning Bad Jokes & Cider | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:03

Today on The Comedy Cast it’s our sex podcast. Spud Murphy and Seamus Kelly speak about their embarrassing sex stories, comedians owning their bad material and Spud’s home-brew cider. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/The-Comedy-Cast-Sex-Owning-Bad-Jokes-Cider.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here Follow Seamus on Twitter: here We kick off the episode speaking about Spud’s venture into home brewing cider. Sure you’d be mad not to give it a go when your backyard is producing apples faster than a Frank McCourt family can produce children. Our first main topic of conversation is a look at an article from Vulture.com about the jokes that comedians regret making, you can read it here. I suppose the highlights of the article is that Patton Oswald speaks about the words he regrets using early in his career. Paul Scheer also tells an interesting story about a 9/11 type of joke, maybe when telling it he was hinting at Steve Rannazzisi’s (who he starred with in The League) story of him not actually being in one of the Two Trader Centers in New York on September 11th. Yes, you read that correctly, you can read about it here. Funny Podcasts We speak about comedians in general owning their bad material, how they must come to terms with the bad jokes and the non-politically correct material that most comedians use at the beginning of their careers. Many say they use it to shock or get attention at the start but then they learn more of the craft and how to make people laugh without shocking them. We all know that jokes come from misdirection but the challenge is really in making people like unexpectedly, not shocking them. There’s a slight difference and the best comedians are the ones that do it best. We get a bit existential on it then; instead of hating or regretting who you were 10 or five years ago onstage, maybe it’s best to own your old material and take solace in the fact that you’ve learned a good deal about your craft along the way. Saying things like ‘no regrets’ it sits uneasily with me, by regretting our actions we learn from our mistakes. Surely? Sex Podcast Next up we have a chat about sex. We all love sex, we all have sex, well, most of us do anyway. Recently though I came across an embarrassing sex story here so we have a chat about some of the embarrassing sexual encounters we’ve had. We talk a little too then about why Irish people are so terrible about speaking about sex and as well we speak about why comedians speak about it so much, it’s no secret, it’s the great leveler that we can all relate to.  Ashley Sanders, False Heads, Louis CK & George Carlin | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:39

Today on the Comedy Cast we have an interview with Ashley Sander a stand-up comedian and podcaster from Florida and we speak to Luke Griffiths from English band False Heads ahead of their two Irish shows. We speak about Louis CK’s return to comedy and George Carlin is our Legend of Comedy. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Ashley-Sanders-False-Heads-Louis-CK-George-Carlin.mp3 Comedy Podcast Hello and welcome back once again to The Comedy Cast and if this is your first time joining us then you’re very welcome along. We hope you liked our bonus episode on Monday and let us know here or on social media if that’s a format you’d like us to keep on doing. Today on the Comedy Cast we’re joined by American stand-up comedian Ashley Sanders, English band False Heads and myself and Seamus we speak about the controversy about Louis CK returning to stand-up comedy and George Carlin is our Legend of Comedy. We kick off the podcast with our interview with Ashley Sanders. Ashley is a stand-up comedian from Florida and has been on the scene there for a few years now. She also runs a fantastic podcast called Who’s This, a podcast where she conducts longform interview with people from all walks of life involved in all kinds of different stratospheres. Funny Podcasts Next up on the podcast we speak about Louis CK’s return to stand-up comedy. We go deep on the story behind the story here and speak about the issue of consent and forced consent. Sure Louis has apologised, but still, there’s still something that feels very wrong about the whole thing. We won’t get into it here but we speak at length about it and we’d like to know your thought to, so don’t be shy about emailing in or getting in touch on social media. False Heads Luke Griffiths of False Heads joins us there for our music interview. False Heads are an English three piece who have been making waves since the release of their first EP, Gutter Press last year. They’re a fantastic band who are pretty difficult to pigeon hole, taking influences from punk to mod, from doom to guitar pop. They’re one of the most exciting bands to come out of England in quite a while and they’re destined for big things. Getting them on the show at this point in their career is something special. Luke and Spud speak about False Heads’ influences, their songwriting process and how they dealt with the added pressure of being labelled “the future of Rock and Roll”. Legend of Comedy, George Carlin George Dennis Patrick Carlin was born on May 12th 1937.     Our Irish listeners will of course know that his father was Count Donegal and his mother was the daughter of Irish emigrants to America. Their marriage wasn’t a happy one though and they separated only two months after wee George was born, his father’s alcoholism being the problem. Raised Catholic by his mother, George Carlin was in and out of school over the years, as in he was kicked out of a couple along the way for his behaviour and in his own words was raised on the mean streets of White Harlem. Morningside Heights, didn’t have the same ring to it but White Harlem gives a more appropriate picture of a tough neighborhood of Irish, Italian, Polish immigrants, poor white Europeans basically.

On today’s episode we speak to Veronica Kwiatkowski, a rising star of stand-up comedy in LA. Dermot Morgan is our Legend of Comedy,  Mike McGrath Bryan is one of Cork’s finest music journalist, he joins us to speak about the music scene in Ireland,  and myself and Seamus speak about Yes Days, comedians being mean to others and much more beside. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Veronica-Kwiatkowski-Mike-McGrath-Bryan-Dermot-Morgan.mp3 Comedy Podcast Follow Spud on Twitter: here Follow Seamus on Twitter: here First up on the Comedy Cast, comedy podcast, this week we speak about something a New York, well New Jersey, (same thing, right?) comedian who said, “You’re not a real comedian until you’ve gotten paid to host a gig, had to introduce one of your enemies, and whispered “Fuck you” into their ear immediately before they start their set.” Now, this got me thinking, how many times does this happen and do comedians admit to fucking people over. Well, our resident Seamus Kelly tell us, yea, pretty much, it certainly happens. Next up we speak about the controversy that one of Rory’s Stories videos caused last week, you can check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKXGeeK4dvU. Again we tackle why everybody loves to get offended by comedy, the video touches on a subject that many people see on a daily basis, couple fighting but maybe some have read too much into it or maybe the video trivialises domestic abuse. Veronica Kwiatkowski Interview Our first guest on this week’s Comedy Cast, comedy podcast, is a rising star of the LA comedy scene, Veronica Kwiatkowski, we speak about how and why she got into comedy, her comedy night in Santa Monica, Funny as Fuck, and we get a bit nerdy on why the comedy in American clubs has to be so fast with punchlines. Check out Veronica Kwiatkowski’s website, where you can watch her videos and get her social media profiles: https://www.veronicakallday.com/ Funny Podcasts Seamus and Spud are back then and they speak about Yes Days, this fad doing the rounds where parents give their children a day where they must say ‘yes’ to everything; pizza for breakfast, yes, kangeroo for lunch, err…yes, can get move granny to a nursing home, errr….you betcha. We speak about what our Yes Days would be like and Spud kills Santa Claus for his wife’s Yes Day. We return to Ranker’s god awful Top 100 sitcoms, this week we go from 90-80 and there’s some terrible crap in there as you’ll discover. Mike McGrath Bryan interview Our music guest this week is Cork’s finest music journalist, Mike McGrath Bryan. Mike’s been someone that Spud has known for a long while now and they speak about their shared love for the Irish music scene, tackle the question of why Irish bands aren’t making it b

On the Comedy Cast this week we speak to Italian stand-up comedian Luca Cupani about his run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Aggy Fox joins us for our Legends of Comedy section where we speak about Richard Pryor. We also speak to post-rock band Magdalena Gornik about why postrock is so awesome and myself and Seamus we go through the 10 Best Jokes of the Edinburgh Fringe, pet deaths and sucky sitcoms. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Luca-Cupani-Magdalena-Gornik-Richard-Pryor.mp3 Comedy Podcast First up on The Comedy Cast this week we speak about the untimely death of Spud’s dog, Rambo, not to get too sad about it but sure y’know yourself it’s always sad when a pet dies. We speak about just how bad vets can be, when you see a couple of different vets and they say different things who are you supposed to believe and maybe they need to go back to failed doctor school, sorry, veterinary school. We do find some fun in it though, thanks to the dog dying Spud is told that he’s ripe for something like Britain’s Got Talent now that he has a tragic story to go with his talent. We have a chat about the strange viral videos of people recording their pets dying. Why do people make these and why do people watch these? Surely watching stuff like that on the internet cannot be good for you, can it? And then there’s videos of animal acting like other animals, what in the name of Jaysus is that all about? Can animals have split personality disorders, split species disorder, is that even a thing? Spud got some mail during the week about the lads’ comments on female legends of comedy, so to make amends he gives out a list of 10 of the best performing female comedians who are working on the circuit now. Luca Cupani Comedian Next up we have our first comedy guest, we have Italian stand-up comedians Luca Cupani, we speak about his Edinburgh Fringe Festival show God Digger. We speak a little about the show of course, the main theme being how his Catholicism sometimes doesn’t match up with his plans for life and al the pondering that comes from that. We speak about Luca’s hypochondria, how stand-up comedy is a new phenomenon in his homeland, why Italians are so good at assimilating when emigrating and why the Bible has four gospels, four versions of the same story, but different. We back to Spud and Seamus then and the boys sink their teeth into the a post Spud found of the 100 Best Sitcoms in the World, we’re going to be coming back to this over the next few week. You can read it here. This week we go from 90-100 and it makes for dire reading. How can Blackadder be number 100 and there’s some awful dross in there. Why are sitcoms so bad? Next up, the 10 Best Jokes of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival we just released prior to recording to we text them, it doesn’t go well, they’re not very good and it’s a bit weird to have a stand-up comedian’s full set distilled into one single joke. And what’s worse is just how bad the Top 10 are. Magdalena Gornik Our musical guest this week is Magdalena Gornik, a post rock band with a very Polish name. However, the story of where the name comes from has nothing to do wi

Ken Cheng, Jobseekers & Jo Brand | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:24

This week on the Comedy Cast Jo Brand is our Legend of Comedy, we have English stand-up comedian Ken Cheng on to speak about his Edinburgh Fringe Show, Best Dad Ever, Irish punk band Jobseekers tell us all about why punk is so important and myself and Seamus speak about baby poo and why Bill Cosby is a pr!ck. https://thecomedycast.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Ken-Cheng-Jobseekers-Jo-Brand.mp3 Comedy Podcast Hello and welcome back to a brand new episode of The Comedy Cast, comedy podcast. We kick off the show in dark form, we delve straight into why some comedians are allowed make dark jokes about horrible things and why someone thought it was a good idea to give Kevin James a comedy special. This gets us talking about all of the new plethora of Netflix comedy specials out there and even though there are some great ones there’s an awful amount of crap out there too and we’re looking at you America, we’re blaming you for making bad comedians famous. We speak about some of the good ones out there and y’know, it’s kind of like this, the more popular something is the worse it’s going to be. Have a look at some of the names you don’t know and you’ll find the odd gem. This week sees the release of the Leaving Cert and A Level results in the UK, so we speak about our experiences of finishing secondary school, or high school if you must and we find out one of the lads did very badly, the other one didn’t do it at all. And here’s the bit where we say you don’t need a Leaving Cert. And we’re not going to write that, coz really nobody cares about your results, move on. Your exam results for your memory-based tests mean very little in the grand old scheme of things. Funny Podcast We speak about the pressure young people find themselves under now with exams and this new strange phenomenon of children graduating from classes in primary and secondary school between the years. What the bejaysus is that all about? Baby poo is the next topic, Spud shares a moment that all parents must go through, it can be a harrowing experience for some, it’s ones of these things most people are a little too uncomfortable to speak about but you know us, we’re not too shy to speak about what the dweebs consider taboo. Ken Cheng Interview Our comedy guest this week is English stand-up comedian Ken Cheng. Ken was the winner of last year’s Dave Joke of the Fringe Award 2017. Ken is obviously up at this year’s Fringe Festival in Edinburgh again so we speak about his new show, Best Dad Ever. We also speak about how weird it is to have your entire show boiled down to one single sentence of a joke and judged on that. Saying that though, it’s still a pretty cool thing to win. Ken’s show is based on his unconventional relationship with his parents so we speak a little about that without giving the show away.  We also speak about why you should still do spots even when doing a full solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and why he used to write science fiction about his stuffed toys as a child. We also speak about Ken being a former professional poker player and his flirtation with studying mathematics when younger. And finally we speak about some of the opportunities Ken has had thanks to last year’s success at the Fringe and why with radio you can be a bit more experimental than with television. You can get tickets for Ken Cheng’s Edinburgh Fringe Show he
