Practitioner Spotlight with Danyelle Demchock Danyelle was led to FDN through her desire to learn about functional medicine, underlying causes that create diseases if the body is kept in that state, subclinical assessment of the body, and a desire to help her clients to learn more about their bodies and start being the CEO’s of their health  and well-being. Applying FDN to her own health, over time, has ultimately led to her to be a better detective with her own body. She has optimal health and knows what that feels like, so when something is off or if she is experiencing any symptoms, knows to immediately address the underlying causes. Danyelle said her main take aways from FDN training were — “Common” doesn’t mean “normal,   a comprehensive understanding of how the body works, and subclinical assessment of what is really happening underneath the surface. An education that differentiates her from many other nutrition coaches…because she can provide tests that show what is going on in her client’s bodies.

Ask The Mentors 1.  Low Lipid Peroxides, Has any of the research on values less than 1 brought forth more understanding?   2.  What are good bedtime snacks to recommend for those waking in the night because of blood sugar issues, and how soon before bedtime should they eat them? 3.  What are some good breakfast suggestions for people (especially since many are used to eating all carbs and now cannot eat gluten, dairy, or eggs)? 4. Coaching using DUTCH test, challenges, compliance, buy-in 6.  If DHEAS is high, testosterone in low, and estrogen is high, is this as simple (although I'm not sure it's actually "simple") as testosterone converting into estrogen with the recommendation being aromataste inhibitors? If not overweight, what other reasons could be causing high conversion of testosterone to estrogen?

Practitioner Spotlight with Rebecca Pemberton In 1998, Rebecca had a high-stress job placing nurses at a major hospital in Atlanta – and all the unhealthy habits that came along with it – eating on the run, being on call all hours of the day & night.   During a routine dental appointment, when the hygiene tools were placed on her chest, she found it was very painful.  Rebecca’s dentist recommended that she see a rheumatologist because she might have this new thing called fibromyalgia.  Rebecca said she had an easy diagnosis of fibromyalgia, back when people were being told it was all in their heads with all 18 trigger points being active.  She spent the next eighteen or so months trying to work out a care plan, but basically wound up on some heavy duty medications and being bed-ridden! After completing a Bachelors in Holistic Nutrition, Rebecca and her husband adopted their daughters.  Caring for them, with all of their health challenges made it very clear that she was going to have to be very intentional with their care plan.  While the degree in holistic nutrition provided a lot of great theory, it didn’t provide a lot of tools.  So, in searching for online lab testing for one of her daughters, Rebecca came across FDN and immediately signed up. The education and tools in FDN hasn’t just helped Rebecca with her own health but their three daughters have really benefited as well.

Ask The Mentors Call! 1.  Clients that don't commit but still want your time.  Do any of you experience clients that go through a Discovery Session with you but then proceed to email you multiple times (emails that require a ton of time) asking tons of questions; many of the same things that were addressed in the Discovery Session.... yet don't commit to working with you/moving forward. Such a time suck and I am struggling with where to draw the line on this.  2.  Caller asking about female client, on birth control for 10 years, trying to regulate 3.  Caller asking about OAT testing and ELISA/ACT vs. MRT 4.  Patient tested for H Pylori 5 years ago, followed a protocol, never retested. Did GI Map recently and came back H Pylori positive. In FDN course notes, it mentions that H Pylori can work its way into Gallbladder and be harder to eradicate. Patient has been on standard h pylori protocol (Pyloricil) for a month and hasn't noticed a difference in symptoms. Should I recommend a gallbladder flush at this point? If so, any specific ones to follow? Would the Liver-Gallbladder Quick Flush in our notes be sufficient? 5. For the liver and gall bladder quick flush, what amount of malic acid can be taken (and when) to replace the apple juice, if someone cannot have the apple juice (due to blood sugar or food sensitivity issues)? 6.  As FDN, we favor keeping all of our pieces and parts. However, there are the occasions where that is not ideal. I have a client that was taken to the ER, where it was discovered that her gallbladder was inflamed/infected and contained one large, golf ball sized stone. Surgery promptly followed. Does anyone have any tried and true remedies for helping the body transition to the new norm of no gallbladder?

Practitioner Spotlight with Kathleen DiChiara! While completing FDN, Kathleen found the principles of the DRESS for Health Success® program brought the focus back to the foundation of health. She found this to be different from even the “integrative” practitioners that still were focusing on supplementation without testing, which again left her with just “managing” her condition.  Kathleen shared the most challenging part of the program was having to implement the changes while she still had unbearable pain and fatigue.  Even so, she started not only applying the FDN principles on herself but also for her husband and three young children.  Kathleen said, the DRESS program put her back into the driver seat of her own health! Kathleen added, that while, the diet and exercise are still the biggest resistance for most people, in her opinion it is the most underestimated approach available to all of us!  The FDN principles have allowed Kathleen to dig deeper for her complex clients and she believes that functional nutrition offers a higher level of support by identifying the food that will support the healing process and correcting the imbalances in the body through nutritional changes.

Practitioner Spotlight with Nanci Tunley! Nanci says she loves how the lab work does force her clients to be honest with themselves. A common challenge she runs into when working with clients, is that they can become overwhelmed and the key to overcoming that is to not give them more than they can handle at once. Nanci graciously shared that she structures her client services into thirty day, three and six month packages.  She currently obtains her business via word of mouth referrals, online programs and webinars or speaking in front of audiences. Nanci’s tip to her fellow FDN practitioners… would be to keep clients responsible and attached to the true outcome they desire. She adds that as practitioners, that means asking the right questions and not being afraid to hold them accountable.
