Avital Hochstein. The thirteenth chapter of Sefer VaYikra talks about tzara’at, among other surface afflictions of the human body and of physical property. There are two verbs that appear repeatedly in this discussion—the first is “to quarantine,” s.g.r. In addition to evaluating the identity and severity of the affliction, “the kohen (priest) will quarantine the affliction” (VaYikra 13:4), “and the kohen will quarantine him” (v. 5) etc. The second verb that appears in almost every single verse of the chapter is “to see,” r.a.h. The verb “to see” has varied applications and meanings throughout the chapter—one of which which I will explore here. In particular, I will suggest that this verb plays a part in constructing a specific social dynamic.

The essence of the difficulty is not necessarily the actual death of the two sons, rather the vague circumstances of their death, circumstances shrouded in mystery. What little we do know about how and why they died is very difficult to understand.

Avital Hochstein. Two Models of Atonement. This week’s parashah concludes with a description of the days of miluim, initiation, the days that focus on the dedication of the sanctuary, and that mark the official inauguration of Aharon and his sons as the priests who will serve in it. The verses also indicate that these days are charged with atonement. As a result, these days of miluim — or at least some of the details associated with them — become a model for what other moments and rituals of atonement might look like, including the rituals associated with Yom Kippur and the purification from death effected through the ashes of the red heifer. What is the place of atonement in an event that marks a new beginning? What is the effect of associating ritualized, routine atonement (such as that which we do each year on Yom Kippur) with the atonement of a one-time occurrence (such as that of the miluim)?

Elie Kaunfer. Every year on Pesach we recite the “four questions” at the Seder. But what is the significance of the questions? More specifically, what is the meaning of the opening line of the questions: מה נשתנה הלילה הזה מכל הלילות?

Avital Hochstein. Regarding the Responsibility to be Vocal. This week we begin to read Sefer VaYikra. Despite its reputation, VaYikra is not exclusively concerned with holiness, sacrifices, and the relationship between human beings and God, but is also concerned with private interpersonal relationships. VaYikra underscores that these two realms, between people and God and between people and our fellows, are in fact fundamentally intertwined. And so, already in the first parashah of VaYikra, we engage with the topic of oral communication: oral communication between people, and oral communication between people and God; we engage with the necessity of speech on the one hand, and its hidden dangers on the other.
