After a detour on some email, Armenian delis, incense allergies, and giving to the poor, we finally get back on track with Walther’s thesis #2 on the Law and the Gospel and how being “biblical” isn’t enough. Check it out. For those of you interested in this t-shirt, you can get it at Zazzle.com. http://www.zazzle.com/law_and_gospel_kids_tshirt-235301236761096961
We’re talking CFW Walther’s Law and Gospel and their proper distinction. Have a listen.
We’re starting a new series of whispering on C.F.W.Walther’s Proper Distinction of the Law and the Gospel. But before that, a survey of our favorite hymns for Lent. You just can’t beat those minor keys.
The authority of bishops, the Lutheran distinction of the two kingdoms, and other delights.
Monastic vows. Poverty, chastity, obedience. Not to mention a funny haircut. We’re talking about medieval monasticism and the Reformation’s critique of it. Also a discussion over a listener call regarding what to do when you don’t feel the joy of your salvation. And of course, a little bacon, in celebration of Bacon Mondays in Lent.
The distinction of meats is on the table. Foods, actually We’re talking fish on Friday, bacon on Monday, and whatever other prescribed fasts may be going on. Can they make us holy before God? Does God even care? Why make a distinction of foods at all? We’re talking, and we hope you’re listening. The bump music is dedicated to Manly Dr. Cwirla. Let the listener understand. Click here for more discussions on this article of the Augsburg Confession.
We’re going back to private confession this week and a look at what Lutherans lost and what they retained of private confession. Also Facebook, Urban Dictionary, tuna burgers, and other random silliness. You won’t want to miss this. For a good supplemental discussion to this article go here.
We’re talking with Rev. Al Colver of LCMS World Relief and Human Care about the relief efforts going on in Haiti. Al just returned from Haiti and provides a great eye-witness account of some of the work that is going on there. The sacrifice of the Mass. Is the Lord’s Supper primarily God to us or us to God? That is the question. We’re talking the proper distinction of sacrament and sacrifice and the difference between propitiatory and eucharistic sacrifices – in other words, sacrifices of sin and sacrifices of thanksgiving. This was an important issue at the time of the reformation, and it still is today.
The Manly Doctors of Theology return with a scintillating episode on the topic of priestly celibacy from article 23 of the Augsburg Confession. And, of course, there is the usual banter to start the new year as only the God Whisperers can. When the topic turns to sex, or the absence thereof, you can be sure there will be something outrageous. Have a listen.
Christmas hymns, music, and the Christmas narrative from the Gospel according to St. Luke all jammed into one hour. Unfortunately, the music is a bit low in volume on this episode; we apologize for the technical glitch. Merry Christmas to all and thanks for listening to The God Whisperers.
Well, we set out to talk about article 22, but we got distracted a bit by an early Christmas present that we opened on the air. When we finally get around to it, Article 22 of the Augsburg Confession is the first of the correct articles dealing with abuses and errors of the medieval Roman church. The first on the table is communion under one kind (bread only) for the laity. We’re talking about it in this episode, along with some seasonal stuff, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and yes, you guessed it – more bacon. This time it’s dark chocolate and applewood smoked bacon with alderwood smoked salt. All in good, clean fun. Well, good fun at least. Here’s the source of the chocolate bar we’re talking about, in case you are tempted: http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/ Here’s Katrina Markoff’s site – enough said: http://www.peaceloveandchocolate.com/
Yes, you asked for it, now you have it! The famously infamous organ rendition of “Jesus is a Friend of Mine” by Chris Loemker, first heard on the Advent episode of the God Whisperers. Enthrall family and friends alike with this cerebral styling of a classic contemporary Christian melody. This would make a wonderful e-stocking stuffer for the contemporary Christian music fan on your Christmas list. Solid gold!
We return to the Augsburg Confession and the proper veneration of the saints in article 21. Do we pray to them? Do they pray for us? Does it matter and why? How are the heros of the faith best remembered? We’re talking and hoping you’re listening.
We’re talking the season of Advent, its colors, its hymns, its themes and a whole lot more. Also a special musical feature that is sure to thrill longtime God Whisperers listeners.
