Discussions with Dao

Summary: What are the different sounds of “Discussions with Dao”? The Low Dao: an evolution of one-to-one guest interviews that has butterflied into “the Asian Oprah that seeks motivational insight and success stories” The Jack-n-Out Connection (w/co-host Blackout Trainer): health and fitness trends? At the beginning, sure. Then we started highlighting our guests’ backgrounds and specialties. And now, we’re back to doing health and fitness trends via roundtable discussion. Lots of side rants and tangents to be had. Huge fanbase at Fitocracy. The Vagina Dialogues (w/co-host the $93 Million Girl): a channel to explore the psyche and differences between men and women. Profanity and explicit topics abound. This show is the reason why all Discussion with Dao podcasts are tagged with the explicit rating.

Little known fact: one of the original reasons I started podcasting was to cope with the homesickness I felt overseas. Being able to re-listen to conversations I had with my best friend gave me lots of food for thought. In these last couple of years, he’s really carved a path for himself as a personal trainer. He’s always been keen on life advice too. This little snippet is way before I ever made it on to iTunes.

JNOC Flashback: Gym Intimidation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:00:41

"It's not just girls who get intimidated going to the free weight area. Guys who aren't cut like Blackout-- I feel it too. The biggest thing you got to keep in mind when you're going in there is you're going there for yourself. You're in there to make a better you, and half the battle is getting there in the first place. Just showing up. Whatever you're doing, if you want to compare yourself... if [you] have the same goals, you want to use them as a role model, that's all right. But there's some people who go into the gym and focus so much on comparing themselves to other people, where all they do is cut themselves down. That becomes a useless comparison."

What worked, what didn't...

Master Ballers: Leaving Home & Feeling Useless | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:10:23

"Obviously, Ash Ketchum couldn't stay home to become a Pokemon Master. His last name is freakin' Ketchum! He had to go out into the world, and along the way, he might've acquired some useless Pokemon. He had a Metapod at some point in time. He turned into Butterfree eventually, but Metapod was a worthless Pokemon. All he did was sit there and harden. So while he may have been sitting there and hardening, he was collecting experience in order to become a Butterfree."

 JNOC 42: Refocusing Goals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:58

Haven't laughed this hard on a show in awhile! When I was starting out, some people told me it was unprofessional, but to me, this is what a ‪#‎podcast‬ is all about. That's why I I loved Spill and Yeah, It's That Bad-- you had people who didn't take them too seriously. Friends who were genuinely having fun, and the listener just got to be part of the conversation. Now, I think I've found a sweet spot trying to keep the episodes around 30 minutes. Trying to follow the Joe Rogan Experience length wasn't doing me any favors. In this episode we briefly cover the ‪#‎Superbowl‬ and ‪#‎Snowpocalypse‬. But, you also get a behind the scenes listen to what it's like for Blackout Training to evaluate a competition contestant. Also covered: the toll it takes mentally to not reach your ‪#‎dieting‬ goal.
