Today we begin a new series about a little-understood subject, and that is the subject of “waiting on God.” We don’t want to wait on anything. We are all about fast food, fast communication, fast travel, etc. but, God’s Word promises amazing benefits from the discipline of “waiting.” Listen as Derek explains “what it means” to wait on God and the benefits associated with waiting.

Yesterday, we talked about self-control, and today we are going to learn about the step of perseverance. These two steps go hand-in-hand. Then, we will also talk about godliness. If you’ve missed any of these encouraging messages, I urge you to take the time to listen to all of them.

Today we are going to find out that after we take the step of excellence we move on to the third and fourth steps of “knowledge” and “self-control”. That topic of self-control really addresses the areas with which we all struggle: our physical appetites, thoughts and words. And that might be overwhelming to think about doing if we didn’t remember the fact that the scripture in Second Peter says, we add self-control to spiritual knowledge. It takes the Word of God—or spiritual knowledge—to take that step up

Today, Derek begins looking at the seven successive steps outlined by the apostle Peter that can take us from our starting point of faith to our goal of perfection. It’s good he breaks it down for us and we aren’t required to take one vast leap!

While being “perfect” may sound like an impossible task, today Derek has made that goal seem not only possible, but also attainable. God has given us definite steps to attain that goal, not something vague or imprecise, but rather clear and practical steps we can take to reach the goal He has set for us. We are going to cover a lot of ground today so you may want to grab and pen and notepad.

God’s purposes for His people have never changed. He’s given us the power and ability to do just what He has created us to do through the incorruptible seed of His Word and the power of His Holy Spirit. The questions we must answer are; Are we willing to lay aside the old man, and put on the new man? Are we willing to yield our lives in obedience to God and His Word? Are we willing to take up our place in the Body of Christ and fulfill the great commission and make disciples of all nations?

The new person within us must be brought to maturity through a process of cultivation. As we spend time in God’s Word, we behold His glory and we are changed by His truth. Thereafter we must systematically and progressively deny the demands of the old self and yield instead to the influence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to enlighten our eyes to see what God has for us in the new man.

Today, we explored how the new self is the product of God’s Word, the truth. In the new self, God’s purpose and His image are imparted to us. The nature of the new self can be described by the words, righteousness and holiness. The new self is born from the seed of the Word of God, which is divine, eternal, incorruptible, and so our nature produced from that seed also is divine, eternal, and incorruptible. It’s the very nature of Jesus Himself.

Yesterday Derek taught on identifying the old and new self, today he will teach on the need to learn God’s solution for the problem of the old self. Listen as Derek shares three things which are not God’s solution for the old nature: self, law, and religion. Those methods cannot change the rebellious and corrupt nature of the old self. God’s remedy is execution of the old nature—the execution that took place when Jesus died on the cross for us.
