Of course, during my cool teenage years, I tried to hide it. But I soon couldn’t hide it much longer. And now? Well, you just need to check out my website and social media feeds to see that the obsession shows no signs of letting up.. I have more than 18 years experience in the horticultural industry, and seem to have become a recognisable face in the plant world (possibly thanks to my relaxed attitude to selfies with my favourite plants!) In 2015, I was super chuffed to be listed in the Top 20 most influential horticulturists by The Sunday Times. I’m well-travelled too, often taking on 100km treks in interesting places around the world, and you’ll find I certainly know my Begonia from my Bignonia! You also need to know that I’m possibly a tiny, tiny bit lazy. But, this means I’m one of the best people to come to for gardening shortcuts (hacks). Gardening has a habit of seeming quite overcomplicated, and it doesn’t need to be that way. I feel like i’m here to clear that fog, and help people enjoy easy gardens again! I am by all means a gardening expert, but prefer to simplify things! Once of my main activities over the last 18 years has been developing new plants and new plant concepts! I have introduced hundreds of plants to UK gardens, ranging from Climbing Pelargoniums to Ground Cover Lilies, the TomTato and Egg and Chips plants, and I was also instrumental in getting the UK to grow it’s own Goji Berries, Hanging Basket Blackberries and much more! I have a far-reaching network of contacts and possess the unique skill blend of plant knowledge mixed with marketing awareness. I’ve helped Thompson & Morgan win countless awards, most notably Plant of the Year with Digitalis ‘Illumination Pink’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2012. When introducing new plants, I have handled the whole process; from identifying the product, managing the products trials to directing the photography and preparing the marketing. Over the last 2 years, I have also overseen the development of a successful show garden at Jimmy’s Farm in Suffolk. After a few years helping to direct the Thompson & Morgan catalogue videos, I was encouraged to get in front of

Worms - of course you will need some red wigglers. Shredded newspaper - Add in as a bottom to your worm bin some shredded newspaper Food scraps - Finally feed your worms all of your food scraps.  Don't forget you can add in shredded leaves, grass, and more shredded newspaper as a food source.  Worms will eat just about anything.  Just don't put any bones, aluminum foil etc. in there.     About this week's guest, Justen Garrity Veteran Compost is about two things: 1. Employing veterans and their family members 2. Turning food scraps into high-quality compost Our goal is to fuel our growth with people and material that others pass over. Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans have an unemployment rate that exceeds the national average.  That means that a combat vet has a harder time getting a job than the average person. Two thirds of the material that gets thrown away in the United States every year is compostable. So, there's plenty of people and material to fuel our growth. Our Farm We have a 30-acre farm in Aberdeen, MD.  We're right on the edge of suburban sprawl, but still work the land and compost. The farmhouse dates to the 1870s and is surrounded by an assortment of outbuildings.  The crown jewel is our vermicomposting operation in our barn.  It is the only commercial worm composting operation in Maryland.  More than a million worms are working around the clock to create great compost. The fields around the buildings are home to our aerated compost piles.  Nothing beats the sight of th

#263: How to Make Square Foot Gardening Easier Using Jennifer Pratt’s Invention, the Seeding Square | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:58

In this episode of The Vegetable Gardening Show In this episode, Mike chats with entrepreneur and inventor, Jennifer Pratt, about her invention that makes square foot gardening easier.  If you want to learn how to make square foot gardening easier then this is the episode for you. Jennifer, a school teacher turned successful inventor, armed with the idea to make square foot gardening easier, turned a simple design in her head, into a Mel Bartholomew approved square foot gardening tool. Jennifer tells us how a combination of working with children that had little knowledge of gardening along with her own gardening struggles lead to the Seeding Square, the initial design and how that can-do entrepreneurial spirit keeps her going. Endorsed by the Square Foot Gardening Foundation, Jennifer's square foot gardening invention, the Seeding Square, is used in square foot gardens all across the globe. She tell us how she did it, how it evolved and so much more! Here's what we'll cover in this episode of The Vegetable Gardening Show Jennifer's journey from teacher to inventor The disconnect in children when it comes to gardening and food The biggest obstacles Jennifer had to overcome in order to bring the Seeding Square to market Learning what square foot gardening is and why it is a helpful gardening method Mentioned in this episode of The Vegetable Gardening Show Seeding Square Jennifer's website Seeding Square Photo Contest Mel Bartholomew's book on Square Foot Gardening Jennifer on Facebook Jennifer on Twitter Jennifer on Instagram Contact Info About this week's guest, Jennifer Pratt New to gardening, and without a tool to help simplify the planting process, Jen and her husband invented something that teaches kids (and parents) how to easily plant a vegetable garden. Before donning her inventor's cap, Jen was a school teacher and with that experience she noticed there was a disconnect in kids  regarding a basic understanding of where food comes from. She's working to help simplify vegetable gardening for all ages and experience levels, while also bringing fresh veggies to dinner tables across North America. Jennifer's company is based out of Surrey, BC CANADA. Her goal was to make the process of planting a garden simple. She wanted to offer a tool that made gardening accessible to new gardeners, seasoned gardeners, seniors and kids. In the process she found that optimizing space so efficiently gets users up to 2 - 5 times the harvest, and because the space is so efficiently used, there is almost no room for weeds!
